Whatever you read, watch or listen to you’ll find endless debates over the same question: What does Vladimir Putin want?

He’s massing troops on Ukraine’s border, making demands of Europe and America and issuing threats of all-out war. But what does he really want?

It’s the important question, but to answer it we must answer another question. It involves his calculations of what he can achieve and at what price, and goes like this: What does Putin see?

Weakness, that’s what he sees. Wherever he looks in the West, he sees feckless leaders who have a slippery hold on power and can’t even run their own countries, let alone marshal a united front against Mother Russia..........

Ukraine is the second-largest country in Europe, in terms of both population and land mass, and they have expressed a desire to join NATO as a defense against SOVIET-style Russian aggression. If Biden and his European cohorts do not have the CAJONES to stand up to Putin to say "FuckYOUverymuch!!" then don't be surprised when Taiwan falls next. Tyrants know to never waste a chance to exploit a Power Vacuum, and when it comes down to leadership, our Oval Orifice is an Empty Void...MUD

Putin may SEE weakness, but he's wrong.

He has badly overplayed his hand. Russia's economy is smaller than Italy's. He's facing off against the US, Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Canada, and all of the rest of Europe.

Russia's population is 160 million. The population of NATO is 700 million. NATO's dwarfs Russia.

And the Ukraine - just the Ukraine - if backed by all of that wealth (never mind military force) can field an army larger and better equipped than Russia.

All that NATO has to do is give money to and equip the Ukraine, and Russia cannot successfully invade. They can invade, bog down, and go broke.

The Russian military lacks the means for a sustained offensive. They cannot conquer Ukraine - it is united against them WITHOUT NATO. WITH NATO, the Russians can get in, and bog down, and have their resources stripped from them year after year.

Putin doesn't want Ukrraine in NATO, but it's a cinch that if he invade, NATO will send money and arms, and Ukraine WILL be brought into NATO.

Also, Belarus is precarious. It's likely a cinch that the dictator of Belarus will be overthrown, and Belarus will ALSO join NATO.

All of this makes the Russian strategic position worse and worse.

They don't have the people, they don't have the army. They have a large, empty country and attitude, but they are far, FAR too weak to actually threaten the West. If they want to, they can dissolve their country in a fit of pique and become greater China. But that's about it.

And THEY (the Russians) will suffer no matter what they do. The BEST thing they can do is just admit they are utterly, hoplessly outclassed by the West, can never win a war against the West, and JOIN IT.

Instead, Putin is trying to bluster and blunder. But he has NOTHING - literally NOTHING that can threated the West. And the West CAN overrun Russia (but for nuclear weapons, which are aging and smaller in numbers).

Will the Russians simply commit suicide because they can't win? Maybe. More probably, they'll exhaust themselves in fruitless, angry bellicosity, fall further into Russia's orbit, and end up bitter, poor, and gaining nothing at all from all of their suffering.

Biden's an ass, yes, but Russia is weaker than Italy.
