Ok,so what's the big deal, other than watching carefully to make sure you don't burn it?

I used to heat C-Rations and boil coffee using C-4 plastic explosives all the time.

LOL !!! A lot of people think you are lying when you tell them about that, LOL !!

Well, fires are nothing but slow-motion explosions, and explosions are nothing more than VERY fast moving fires.

The only thing you have to be careful about when cooking or boiling water with plastic explosives it to make DAMN SURE you let it burn out. If you try to stomp the fire out you will be sorry. Bet ya don't do it more than once, though. Hard to stomp out a fire with a crutch.

While that can be true, it is certainly not necessarily true.

Of course it's true. Compress ANY fire and you get an explosion.

You don't need to compress a fire to get an explosion.

Those of us who know Pete know he doesn't BS.

He's got stories that a few of us think could and should go into a book.

No, he does not BS. If he ever did write a book, I would buy it as soon as it was available.

I think he is the type of guy I would enjoy having a drink with and hearing some of his stories.

Which applies to most of us, including me..

Do you know something about explosives that most don't? Can you tell us?

You don't need to compress a fire to get an explosion.

Well, yeah, you do. That pretty much defines explosions. It's what blasting caps do.

I don't even know why I bother explaining.

You don't don't need combustion to cause an explosion. An explosion is simply a sudden release of gases with a strong force. It can be a chemical or even physical reaction that causes this.

It can happen anaerobically.

That was the original comment and my response. I didn't want to go beyond that.

The simplest example I can think about of a non combustion explosion is over inflating a tire till the point the tire explodes. I have heard of people liberally having their head taken off because of this.

Nitroglycerin is an example of a non-combustion chemical reaction causing an explosion. Nitro has very unstable chemical bonds, and when those bonds are released, it releases an enormous amount of energy. This could happen in the complete absence of oxygen.

A fire is normally considered to be the combustion of an organic material (i.e. a quick oxidation of of the organic material).

Beyond that, it becomes an argument of semantics.

I think I am done with this anyway.

The tire explodes because of the heat created by the pressure put on the hydrogen in the oxygen. Hydrogen does not like being compressed, and WILL seek it's freedom to expand. X amount of space can only occupy y amount of volume before expansive things start to happen and loud noises are made.

There is no hydrogen in oxygen. You are just babbling now.

I'm done with this.

I do. It's because you don't know what you are talking about, and refuse to admit you are wrong.

You don't don't need combustion to cause an explosion.

Uhhhh,a combustion IS an explosion.

An explosion is simply a sudden release of gases with a strong force.

And it just happens? Nothing causes it?

It can be a chemical or even physical reaction that causes this.

Yes,and that reaction is the creation of heat, which expands and causes compression and combustion.

Yes,and these bonds are released they cause heat.

This could happen in the complete absence of oxygen.

Now you are trying to explain that explosions can happen in a freaking vacuum???

Maybe you are confusing explosions with implosions?

No moisture in oxygen? Seriously?

What is the chemical symbol for water?

Okay, I'm really impressed by your knowledge of chemical oxidation-reduction reactions and your knowledge of explosive ordinance devices. You make Einstein sound like Maxine Waters.

I'm just some dumb ass country boy who only had around 20 hours of college level chemistry, so what do I know anyway.

Satisfied?

Let's move on.

You seem to know a lot of stuff, but understand little of what you know.

Don't listen to me,though. What do I know,I'm just a guy that spent years handling and setting off explosives.
