Religion Title: Christian chaplain fired for preaching compassion and love over violence of American Sniper What was this controversial sermon that Beckum gave? Here’s the full text and below you’ll find an embedded video of the sermon: Beckum’s sermon that day was about America’s addiction to violence, citing the film “American Sniper” as a symptom of that, and how this was problematic for Christianity, a religion founded on the ideals of nonviolence. Here’s an excerpt: He went on to say that we have to “be very careful about equating patriotism with Christianity,” and implored his flock to be “controlled by love, compelled by love for everyone.” Shortly after Beckum’s sermon, it was announced that he would no longer be the vice president of the university’s Community Foundation. Although the university president claimed Beckum had previously expressed interest in stepping down from that position, his daughter disputes this assertion. Many in the MNU community are wondering if Beckum was “punished” for his pro-peace sermon, and the timing of his dismissal as VP of the community foundation seems to validate those concerns. “Even the people that were frustrated with what (Beckum) had to say in chapel, or wanted to challenge it, were confused and almost offended by the demotion,” said Kristi Rose Jackson, who was elected to be student body president. Sadly, it appears that MNU may have given into the furor and decided that a Christian clergyman preaching the peace the founder of the faith stood for is simply too controversial for their campus. They are wolves in sheep's clothing. America IS addicted to violence, and always has been. And it has resulted in all of the greatest crimes in our national history. Christians who comfortably square violence with Christ are deluding themselves.
#2. To: TooConservative (#0) He went on to say that we have to “be very careful about equating patriotism with Christianity,” and implored his flock to be “controlled by love, compelled by love for everyone.” Well stated. Can't believe he got the boot.
#3. To: Vicomte13, Fred Mertz (#1) Christians who deny Christ's message of peace are not Christians at all. They are wolves in sheep's clothing. We do seem to have reached a jump-the-shark moment. "Hey, padre, keep that Prince of Peace crap out of our church!"
#4. To: Fred Mertz (#2) Well stated. Can't believe he got the boot. And from the Nazarenes. But then, where are the antiwar Baptists and the Quakers and the historic peace churches? America's churches worship a more violent God now.
#5. To: Vicomte13 (#1) Clearly a sign we live in the age of the antichrist.
#6. To: TooConservative (#0) Let him keep preaching. He's doing his job. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) #7. To: Pericles (#5) Clearly a sign we live in the age of the antichrist. Yes especially when we have soldiers flying flags with the image of Christ on howitzers. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) #8. To: redleghunter (#7) (Edited) That is not the same thing as having soldiers fight with Christian flags (Flag of UK is 3 Christian flags in one for example). There is a case for just wars in Christianity but not a celebration of war. Iraq was not a just war and condemned by Pope John Paul.

#9. To: Pericles (#8) Wars are just fine with you when Putin is pulling the trigger. There's a certain inconsistency there. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) #10. To: redleghunter (#9) Wars are just fine with you when Putin is pulling the trigger. Depends on whose head is being shot at. And by the way, Putin is a secular leader.
#11. To: Vicomte13 (#1) (Edited) Christians who comfortably square violence with Christ are deluding themselves.
Quack, waddle...
...and what also floats like a Roman duck?
