The Water Cooler Title: Santorum: ‘People Are Living Too Long’ Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum told supporters in Lancaster, South Carolina Tuesday that the Social Security retirement age had to be increased because “people are living too long.” “Does anybody in this room believe that somebody that 62 years old is too old to work in America today?” Santorum asked. “Social Security was established for people who were too old to work and therefore they needed the support of the federal government.” “Now back in 1936 we probably did and that made sense. Why? Because life expectancy in 1936 was 61. It’s now 80… So you have a situation where things have changed, and for our young people it will even be longer. We keep gaining about a month every few years, we gain in life expectancy. And so the idea that we’re going to keep the Social Security program locked in on a 1937 actuarial chart makes no sense at all.”
He continued: “Do you know what your life expectancy at 65 is? 85. So you have folks living at least 20 years… Ronald Reagan saw this problem and said, ‘Look, we have to do the common sense thing. We have to phase the retirement age back.’ What did he do? Twenty-five years from 1983 he started to phase it back. And we did and that’s where we are right now. We are in the middle of a phase up to age 76 which will be normal retirement age.” “Well, we need to continue to do that. Not radically. But look at where the revenues are coming in and where the expenses are and we need to adjust everything from cost of living increase for high income seniors is one thing. We can look at retirement ages. And again, you still will be able to retire at 62 and take Social Security, you’ll just get a slightly smaller benefit. Why? Because we can’t afford the benefit structure we have because people are living too long.” Watch this video from CNN, broadcast Sept. 13, 2011.

We should be lowering the retirement age to make room for young people starting out in life. With the economy still in the dumper -- maybe permanently? -- and full-time jobs becoming as scarce as rain during a drought, huge percentages of Americans have had their (misplaced) faith in the American dream shaken, the upper-middle-class consumerist lifestyle is exposed as a mirage for anybody who plays by the rules. Capitalism and the America that embraced it as a way of life is now and forever more a failure. It does me good to know that the generation that voted in Reagan and his ideology will see their America die from that ideology before their very own eyes and knowing they had a hand in its destruction. #2. To: Brian S (#0) My Granny made it to 109 and lived in three centuries. She passed on in 2001. He must hate her.

#4. To: Fred Mertz (#2) My Granny made it to 109 and lived in three centuries. She passed on in 2001. Sorry for your loss. That noted, she'd recognize Owe-bama's failed economic policies, having lived through the same with FDR in the 30's. Proxy IP's are amusing.....lmao #5. To: Fred Mertz (#2) My Granny made it to 109 and lived in three centuries. She passed on in 2001. She saw more changes in her lifetime than any previous generation. Only if she wasn't working at a full time job (being a housewife doesn't count) until right before her death.
#6. To: Badeye (#4) I was lucky to have her for so long. I started to get gray hair while she was still alive. Everyone who knew her called her "Granny". She was a wonderful person. Thanks for your kind remarks.
#7. To: Badeye (#4) That noted, she'd recognize Owe-bama's failed economic policies, having lived through the same with FDR in the 30's. You've never actually discussed that topic with anyone from that generation, have you?
#8. To: mininggold, war (#5) She really did. She came over on The Boat to Ellis Island when she was 12. She worked in some sort of hat-maker factory in her young days - they had a name for it that escapes me at the moment. There was a tragic factory fire in NYC in the 1920s - dozens of women died there. I'm sure war can look it up for me.

#18. To: Fred Mertz (#13) I found it. I stand corrected - it was one hundred years ago in 1911. I saw a tour of that building on the Tee Vee just a few days ago. The floor where all the women died is being remodeled. Most were just teenagers.

To: war (#15) (Edited) Under the ownership of Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, the factory produced women's blouses, known as "shirtwaists." Okay, I guess I screwed up there. Somehow my Granny was affected by the fire - whether she lost friends or neighbors I don't remember. I guess she was 19 when this factory fire tragedy occurred. Heck, we're talking about 100 years ago. My memory is pretty good. Edit: Granny was around 100 years ago, not me.

#32. To: nolu chan (#31) One of the original ideas of SS in the depression era was to induce earlier retirement to make room for younger people. THAT plan was obviously before they knew the dominant demographic of the US would resemble Brazil. To: Fred Mertz (#6) I was lucky to have her for so long. I started to get gray hair while she was still alive. Everyone who knew her called her "Granny". She was a wonderful person. Your welcome. Around age 25 I realized anyone of advanced age had some great stories to tell, and usually they were eager to talk to someone. Used to talk to a neighbor that was born around 1900....just stories about everyday life made you appreciate what you have today. Proxy IP's are amusing.....lmao #34. To: mininggold (#7) You've never actually discussed that topic with anyone from that generation, have you? Sure have. Lots of old timers out here in farm country, ming. Proxy IP's are amusing.....lmao #35. To: Liberator, nolu chan (#32) THAT plan was obviously before they knew the dominant demographic of the US would resemble Brazil. Liberator's comment makes no sense - Brazil has a young population much larger than their older population. If that was the American case that we had Brazilian old to young ratios, than having people retire earlier to open up jobs for younger people (at lower salaries than long term employees) would be imperative for the USA.
