Looking the other way as children are abused... that's a sin in my book.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert today released the following statement after learning of the death of Terri Schiavo: “I was saddened to learn of Terri’s passing. “We should take solace in knowing that Terri’s suffering is finally over and she is now in a better place. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.” http://speaker.house.gov/library/misc/050331schiavo.shtml Al Jazeera - Fox News Channel - correspondent - Steve Centanni #7. To: All (#7) http://hnn.us/blogs/archives/20/2005/3/ Tuesday, March 29, 2005 Where is Tom DeLay ... and the Democrats? "One thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo, to elevate the visibility of what's going on in America, that Americans would be so barbaric as to pull a feeding tube out of a person that is lucid and starve them to death for two weeks. I mean, in America, that is going to happen if we don't win this fight. This is exactly the issue that's going on in America, the attacks against the conservative group, against me and against many others. The point is, is the other side has figured out how to win and to defeat the conservative movement, and that is to go after people personally, charge them with frivolous charges." Representative Tom DeLay, as reported by CNN on 23 March 2005 It was only a week or so ago when Tom DeLay was making himself the public face of the Terry Schiavo case. It was a time when Delay believed he had caught hold of a politically winning issue that would somehow scrub away his ethical transgressions. Even the Wall Street Journal has excoriated Delay for his dubious practices: “The problem, rather, is that Mr. DeLay, who rode to power in 1994 on a wave of revulsion at the everyday ways of big government, has become the living exemplar of some of its worst habits.” When the politics seemed right, and Mr. Delay saw a chance for moral expiation, he made sure he was all over the news talking about the absolute sanctity of life. Then the sharply negative polls started coming in. And the Los Angeles Times broke the story that Tom Delay and his family “decided in 1988 to let his comatose father die.” The reason: doctors had advised that “basically he would be a vegetable” and even without a living will the family decided that Delay’s father would not want to live that way. Sound familiar? Despite efforts by a Delay spokesman to draw distinctions between the Delay and Schivao situations, the Times concluded: “There were also these similarities: Both stricken patients were severely brain-damaged. Both were incapable of surviving without medical assistance. Both were said to have expressed a desire to be spared from being kept alive by artificial means. And neither of them had a living will.” As soon as the politics started heating up and his own integrity was once again at issue, Delay just melted away. Moral issues be damned. As Terri Schiavo was entering her most desperate days Tom Delay had disappeared. No more pontificating in public about the value or life or the need to save Terri. Moral consistency had quickly fallen victim to political expediency. But the Democrats in Congress have hardly displayed greater moral courage. Right from the start of the Schiavo debate, Democrats fled the coop like so many frightened chickens. No one really knows the position of the party or its leadership on the vital questions raised by the Schiavo case. Even Democratic members of Congress in safe seats like those from my home state of Maryland failed when it mattered to join the great national debate. No wonder pollster John Zogby concluded, “America has united on this under the banner of ‘a pox on both your houses.’” Maybe the time has come to dismiss all these Republican and Democratic jellyfish from office and elect some representatives with real moral backbone.
