Religion Title: Mormon Church, Jewish Leaders Tackle Proxy Baptism
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Mormon church says it has changed its genealogical database to better prevent the names of Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps from being submitted for posthumous baptism by proxy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe the baptism gives deceased people in the afterlife the opportunity to receive the Gospel. Church members are baptized in the place of people whose names are drawn from a church-run database. Jews are offended by the idea that Mormons are trying to alter the religion of Holocaust victims, who were murdered because of their religion. In 1995, the church agreed to eliminate most Holocaust victims from baptism. But database monitoring found the names were still submitted. The Mormon church and the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors said Wednesday the database has been improved. #2. To: Fred Mertz (#1) Petey, what's this all about? Beats me. I didn't even know it was possible to Baptize dead people. Jews are offended by the idea that Mormons are trying to alter the religion of Holocaust victims, who were murdered because of their religion. I can see why Jews,Catholics,Buddhists,or members of any other cult would be upset over this, though. As for Jews being upset over somebody trying to take away their "special victim status" goes, fuck 'em! There is and was nothing "special" about them other than their ability to whine and bitch. The whole "they were murdered because of their religion" bullshit is just that, bullshit. The Nazi's also murdered millions of Catholics,Orthodox Christians,Gypsies,Slavs, atheists, agnostics, etc, etc, etc. Were THEY murdered because they were Jewish? This kind of crap reminds me of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton whining about blacks having welfare cut.
