SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP)—The 49ers moved a step closer to leaving their longtime San Francisco home after residents in the Silicon Valley city of Santa Clara voted in favor of a new stadium for the NFL team.

The 49ers have played in San Francisco since the franchise was established more than 60 years ago and have called Candlestick Park their home since the early 1970s. They have won five Super Bowls during their stay.

By approving Measure J, voters in Santa Clara signed off on a plan by the team to build the 68,500-seat stadium in the city.

Under preliminary terms with the team, the city and area hotels would contribute $114 million to the $937 million project next to Great America theme park.

Team officials spent almost $4 million in support of Measure J.

I went to Dave and Busters in the Great Mall last time in Santa Clara. Lot of fun.

Those clowns who now infest SF deserve nothing but contempt.

I thought they got a relatively new stadium not to long ago. Or was that for the Giants?

No, last game was in Candlestick Park. A windy park that's so old Willie Mays played there when he was young.

Those fishbowls patterned after Busch Stadium post-64 are now demolished. This one is older than even Memorial stadium in Baltimore, also demolished.

Hmmm. I remember driving past it last couple of times I was out there. Can't blame the 49ers...but as noted above, California is broke.

It's harder to NOT drive by it, that and the Cow Palace. I just love those good conservative economic principles being displayed on this thread.... of wanting the taxpayers to bribe teams with the socialistic building of new stadiums.
