Acting House Speaker Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., said Tuesday that the chamber will move on aiding Israel "if we need to act" before a new permanent speaker is elected. Only one problem with that — McHenry, serving as speaker pro tempore, doesn't have the authority to do anything other than act on matters related to electing a new speaker. He'll take emergency action on Israel, and to hell with the rules that say he can't. Who's going to stop him? The House Rules are not a suicide pact. OR Faced with the crisis, the Republicans will pick a new speaker and we will move ahead. Democrats and the bulk of Republicans will line up behind tying aid to Ukraine to aid to Israel, and the minority who opposes these things will be shoved aside.
