Survival Skills Title: Staying Warm During a Winter Power Outage Depending on where you live, a winter power outage can quickly become a life- threatening emergency. Winter storms with heavy snowfalls, high winds, and a coating of ice are a threat to our vulnerable power grid. Making winter even more of a threat recently is the current economic upheaval. In economically depressed places like Detroit, many residents have had their utilities shut off due to an inability to pay their bills. With temperatures in the negatives, people could quite literally freeze to death in their homes. You don’t have to be a prepper to realize that secondary heating systems, some specialized skills, and a frigid weather plan could be vital to your survival in the winter. Both can provide heat if power goes out. I had a friend that heated his house with electric base board heat. He also had a fireplace. He acquired an old gas floor furnace, and added it in the center of the house. Even if the power went out, he had heat. Here, we have electric furnace ( geo thermal ), we have a wood stove, a couple propane "Mr Heater " stoves, and a couple kerosene heaters. Everyone should be prepared with a fall back system !! It cranks out the heat. My wood is all free from jobs or when I go to the dump and pick up some free logs. Lots of free logs at the dump.
#3. To: A K A Stone (#2) Good for you. Free wood is great. Stock up with it in the spring & summer. Keep it covered, and let it season. I am sure you do. I just point that out for members that may not have experience with wood. Good luck Stone, hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and have a very happy and prosperous new year !!!
