United States News Title: Trump says he will nominate a woman to the Supreme Court next week WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Saturday he will nominate a woman to the Supreme Court next week and that she should be confirmed as soon as possible, even in the midst of election season. "I will be putting forth a nominee next week - it will be a woman," Trump told supporters at an airport rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina. When Trump told supporters that "we're going to fill the seat," the crowd responded with repeated chants of "fill that seat! fill that seat!" Trump is looking for a successor for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of the court's liberal justices, who died Friday after announcing in July she suffered a recurrence of cancer and that lesions had been found on her liver. That comment is not objective from the perspective of selecting the best candidate possible.

It is IF all the candidates he is considering are pretty much equally qualified, and let's not forget that this is a political world, not a mechanical world. The reality of 2020 America is that if a politician is in a position to appoint someone to a prominent position in government and the choice is between equally qualified white men and a black man or woman, gender and color win every time. In 2020 America, race and gender ARE qualifications. You can't change or save anything if you can't get elected. It ain't perfect, but it is what it is,all we have. In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments. #3. To: sneakypete (#2) You live in the sticks. You are not objective.
#5. To: buckeroo (#1) That comment is not objective from the perspective of selecting the best candidate possible. It depends on how you define "the best candidate". The nomination process is, by definition, political. And gender is a political ingredient this year. The best candidate is one that not only can do the needed job well but also one that the R's can survive. Besides, Trump may have already selected the best candidate and her being a female might only be incidental. Nothing in his comment says he has only considered women.
#6. To: A K A Stone (#0) ....and that she should be confirmed as soon as possible, .... Trump should do his job and nominate, and let the Senate decide it if should happen before or after the election. They are under pressure with the looming election, and 23 of the 35 seats up for election are R held, about twice as many as current D seats. So apart from it being a national embarrassment for any office holder to be a D, the D's have a lot more to win than to lose. It can be done after the election, but before Trump's first term and Congress's session ends in January. But Trump can nominate whom he likes and from that point on, he'll be out of the picture and purely up to the Senate.
#7. To: buckeroo (#1) That comment is not objective from the perspective of selecting the best candidate possible. She was on Trump's short list (along with a majority of male candidates) and no one claimed she didn't belong there. So I have to assume they were all equally qualified. The fact that Trump selected a female to replace a female makes sense. 9 Republicans voted for the "wise Latina woman". Think Trump's nominee will get that many Democrat votes?
#8. To: Pinguinite (#6) the D's have a lot more to win than to lose. Not if they vote against a female U.S. Supreme Court nominee.
#9. To: misterwhite (#7) The fact that Trump selected a female to replace a female makes sense. poppycock.
#10. To: buckeroo (#9) poppycock. balderdash.
#11. To: buckeroo (#9) The fact that Trump selected a female to replace a female makes sense. I'm beginning to think you don't like women. In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments. #12. To: sneakypete (#11) I'm beginning to think you don't like women. As always, you miss the point about my perspective: We need the best minds to understand our government; not just anyone.
#13. To: buckeroo (#12) As always, you miss the point about my perspective: We need the best minds to understand our government; not just anyone. And what is it about being female that precludes having a "best mind"? In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments. #14. To: sneakypete (#13) And what is it about being female that precludes having a "best mind"? As always, you completely miss my perspective. The best CANDIDATE is not limited to women.
#15. To: buckeroo (#14) As always, you completely miss my perspective. The best CANDIDATE is not limited to women. THAT I can agree with whole-heartedly! In the entire history of the world, the only nations that had to build walls to keep their own citizens from leaving were those with leftist governments.
