The psychology behind why
some people won't wear masks

Most Americans have never had to wear a mask for their health before, let alone while they shop for groceries or go for a run.

So, even as businesses or states increasingly require them, rebellion is natural -- to a degree, says Dr. David Aronoff, director of Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Division of Infectious Diseases and professor of medicine.

But he urges Americans to think of the mask guidance not as forced conformity, but as a necessary act of solidarity: Wearing a cloth mask could stop seemingly healthy people from infecting others with coronavirus if they're asymptomatic. Coronavirus, face masks and America's new fault line

"We're all hopeful that this pandemic disappears," he said. "Then we can stop doing as much risk mitigation. But for now, we really depend on the trust and kindness of others to protect our wellbeing. And that's part of being an American."

We're all hopeful that this pandemic disappears

Hard to do since the pandemic never appeared in the first place.

think of the mask guidance not as forced conformity

Hard to do since that is all the mask guidelines are about...forced conformity.

Wearing a cloth mask could stop

Could? Maybe? Possibly? This whole "pandemic" has been nothing but speculation.

A quack.

Gatlin, do you wear a mask when you go out? I do not.

Gatlin, do you wear a mask when you go out?

I do not go out. I have no need to since I have everything I desire or need readily and quickly delivered to me. I do wear a N95 3M mask and surgical gloves when I accept deliveries at the front door and place the packages just inside the door to quarantine them for 24 hours before opening.

I do all of this since I am definitely in what has been determined to be the “high risk category” and I feel the need to take all precautions will do me no harm. I have freezers stocked with 2 months food supply. I do occasionally order meals from my favorite 5 Star restaurant for delivery and they have had no cases among their staff – and there are no cases in my immediate area.

I trust I have adequately answered your question. It is so refreshing to be asked a question instead of being forcibly attacked immediately based on some flimsy supposition and without any stated reason. Thank you for not doing that again.

I do not [wear a mask].

That is your freedom of choice – except in these states that require you to wear a face mask in public. One can of course choose not to wear a mask in those states – but must be prepared to face the consequences, if there are any. Just as a matter of interest and for no specific reason – why do you choose not to wear a mask?

why do you choose not to wear a mask?

Maine only recently required masks in public...with exceptions for those who have trouble breathing through a mask. So, in other words, the requirement is not strictly enforceable.

In my youth, I worked side jobs hanging sheetrock and repairing plaster in old NY apartment buildings. Mega dust! And like the idiot youth that I was I didn't wear a mask. Consequently I have a very hard time breathing now in my old age. A mask would not be good for me now.

And the local law enforcement in my area have said that they will not be the "mask police" and I commend them. People are fed up with the nonsense.

If you are high risk you probably should be careful. But I hope you are not letting those five star meals sit around for 24 hours!

You know that you like to provoke people...don't pretend that you don't ;-)

So basically you put better people at risk for your stuff.

Do you smoke dope? You sound paranoid.

Nah – Say it ain’t so …

Alright, I admit that I do. And I do so to make them prove their point. If they can convince me, then I will agree with them. Most cannot prove their point and simply revert to calling me names. Of course, I then provoke them more.

Whispering – But now that you have discovered my secret, I ask that you please don’t tell anyone – especially Stone and Deckard.

No –

Not any more than you “put at risk” the truckers who deliver to the food stores you go shop at. Or the clerks who stock the shelves there and the cashiers with whom you come into direct contact with at check out.

You see, you are also getting things delivered so that you can have them. [Well, on second thought – I guess you never will]. And yet you are so desperately looking for some unfounded reason to chastise me for doing exactly the same thing as you are doing. Besides, I send the folks who deliver things to me no place. They are simply going there any way and they call me and ask what can they get for me while they are there. It is nice to have loving people be so considerate to you. I hope that someday you will be able to enjoy this wonderful experience continually in your miserable life.

You need to snap out of your “pot / kettle” syndrome and try to start thinking logically and rationally. Can you at least try? Do it for me – dear old Gatlin – please.

Do you smoke dope? You sound paranoid.

You are confused – really confused.

Hey, snap out of it.

This is me, Gatlin, you are posting to – mpt Deckard.
