The simplest explanation is the most likely explanation, and that is the virus is real and its spreading worldwide. It's impact on 80-82% of the population is minimal/negligable, but the remaining are hit seriously and can qualify for hospital care. And about 10% of those admitted to the hospital die. Though the infection rate could be far higher than reported so maybe 90-95% of people infected have minimal symptoms. This would reduce the mortality rate further below 2%. On the other hand, if those who need hospital care can't get it because hospitals are packed full of sick people, then they may die even though they would have lived with proper treatment.
