Bryant was reportedly in his private helicopter with three other people when it crashed.

Emergency personnel responded when a fire broke out.

Laker Kobe Bryant has died after the helicopter he was in crashed on a hillside in the Calabasas area on Sunday morning, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Bryant was reportedly in his private helicopter with three other people when it crashed.

No one on board the helicopter survived, according to TMZ Sports.

Emergency personnel responded when a fire broke out.

The black box will give better details. Did the fire break out before the crash or after the plane crashed? I noticed the foggy conditions and I'm very familiar with Las Virgines Rd. as a friend and I would take that route on way to Malibu to go sailing. It is never a good idea to be flying in such fogging conditions like that. Even driving those curvy roads in foggy conditions can be disastrous.

The black box will give better details.

Unlikely there was one; black boxes are not required on private aircraft, but there are radar tracks and transponder data, along with pilot status reports, that give plenty of clues. Eyewitness said he heard it flying low and heard the crash, then saw the fire and smoke; the fire was caused by the crash.

If interested, you can follow the ATC/radar transmissions by clicking here.

I really don't give a shit about sportsball bouncers, but I did wonder about the meandering circles over Burbank (see the link in my post #5) - this audio answers that; they were held and prevented from flying over Burbank Airport airspace until a couple of planes had completed their landings.

It looks from the radio, flight path, weather, terrain and altitude that the pilot made some very stupid decisions to fly low into a canyon area in foggy conditions.

I have a pilot license around here somewhere; visualizing this 35-min flight in my head gave me the shivers; what a monumentally dumb idea to proceed to the endpoint.

I think Bryant owned this helicopter, and the probably-employee pilot is dead too, so there's nobody to sue for negligence. Looking at the flight-data websites, this was a fairly-busy machine, which leads me to conclude the pilot was probably on his payroll and on-call most or all of the time.

I read where Bryant took the helicopter everywhere he went. Seems that it was his favorite mode of travel.

I remember hearing from the news account had stated that the pilots were not given permission to take flight because of the foggy conditions. And considering this was a private plane (as you pointed out), it would be unfortunate to find out it had no black box. And that the pilot being on call like that was probably very tired. NTSB should look into that because if the pilot was on call most of the time, he was certainly burning himself out.

Thanks for the link, Hank. I'll check it out. Your posts are always very interesting to read.

R.I.P., Kobe Bryant.

According to one poster, from that link you referenced:

blastman8888

1 day ago LA times reported LAPD grounded their helicopters until the afternoon due to fog. Kind of tells you the risk level for this flight was high.

This exactly what I remember hearing as well. If LAPD had grounded their helicopters due to high fog concentration in the air, you would think that pilot would have taken a hint.

You're welcome. I think I caught a radio report this morning indicating this pilot got "special permission" to fly in those circumstances. Yet he was VFR rather than on instruments. Even IFR, most pilots won't fly in fog that close to the ground; too many deadly things can happen.

I'm don't know if it's still the case, but previously even fully-automated commercial airliners, capable of flying themselves all the way to the ground to a smooth landing without human assistance, still weren't allowed to land in ground fog conditions. As good as the tech is, it wouldn't be able to detect a taxiing aircraft accidentally crossing the runway in front of it, so the rule makes sense.

But Celebrity. We can't have Kobe's kid missing her ghettoball game, after all. It seems that came with a heavy price.

Yet he was VFR rather than on instruments.

Yep. He was flying VFR along the major highways, something I'm guessing he did almost all the time on these short hops. But then he flew into the fog and didn't trust his instruments -- despite being IFR rated.

Other pilots have said his actions - - sudden climb, sudden descent, banking -- indicated disorientation.

So far that seems to be the case; he didn't resort to his under-hood training to trust your instruments when you can't see out. It's not easy to do, your senses fight like hell, but it's a standard and mandatory part of pilot training.

Plus, helicopters have one nifty feature we fixed-wing guys don't have - the ability to stop, hover and assess the situation. Again, if you're dumb enough to fly VFR into fog at low altitude, you're going to have to trust your instruments to hover as well (unless this machine was fitted with auto-hover) and it seems this guy didn't.

It appears I was guessing wrong yesterday in my posting; the helicopter was owned by Island something-something and it was their pilot. So unless that's a Kobe Bryant company, there is an entity to sue for damages.

the ability to stop, hover and assess the situation.

Kobe: "Excuse me, Captain. Why are we hovering? I don't want to be late."

Pilot: "Sorry, Mr. Bryant. I'm all confused up here. I can't see out the window and my instruments, well, I don't trust them. So I figured I'd just stop flying."

Kobe: "Good idea. I'll make sure that's permanent."
