Title: Coronavirus 'will infect 350,000 people in Wuhan': Scientists make alarming prediction ahead of Chinese New Year as China locks down FOURTEEN cities, part of the Great Wall and Disneyland Shanghai – and even McDonald's shuts up shop

The Wuhan coronavirus has infected more than 800 people and killed 26 around the world so far this month

•Experts predict the true number of cases is in the thousands, with many only becoming mildly ill

•Major cities and towns in China are cancelling public transport and closing roads to try and stop the spread

•Hospitals in Wuhan, the outbreak's centre, have been 'overwhelmed' this week, experts said

•The government has ordered the six-day construction of a new hospital in Wuhan to deal with the virus

•Report shared with MailOnline suggests 250,000 people – up to 350,000 – will have caught virus by February

In the US, one man in Washington State is being monitored after being confirmed to have the disease and other suspected cases are being tested in California and Texas. Across the Atlantic, British authorities have tested 14 people but no cases have been confirmed yet.

Chinese New Year is due to be celebrated tomorrow, which normally means millions of people travel around the country and the world to visit family.

But major festivities all over the country have been cancelled, including those at Beijing's Forbidden City, a major tourist destination, and fairs and carnivals in Beijing and Hong Kong.

In a further sign of how seriously the outbreak is being taken, McDonald's has ordered the closure of branches in five cities in the Hubei province, where the outbreak started and has proved most deadly, and clothing store Uni Qlo has shut seven stores in Wuhan city.

Officially, the Wuhan coronavirus has infected more than 800 people and killed 26 around the world so far this month, but experts predict the true number of cases is in the thousands. Yet the World Health Organization last night decided not to declare the outbreak a global emergency - despite governments around the world being on high alert and screening passengers from China at airports.

'We will continue to carefully monitor the situation and... announce the reopening date upon confirmation.'

A section of the Great Wall known as the Badaling section – one of the most visited parts – has been closed to tourists, Al Jazeera reports.

The following measures have been taken to control the disease's spread in and around China: •Beijing's Forbidden Palace, which hosts the Palace Museum, will be closed to visitors from tomorrow, Saturday •The Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, has been closed •A four-day carnival planned in Hong Kong, from January 25 to 28, has been cancelled by the state tourism board •Hong Kong's Lunar New Year World Cup football tournament has been called off •All public Lunar New Year events in Macau, home to more than half-a-million people, have been cancelled

A report shared with MailOnline after being produced yesterday by researchers from Lancaster University in England, the University of Florida and the University of Glasgow, estimated that only five per cent of all the coronavirus cases are being diagnosed.

Dr Jonathan Read, a biostatistics researcher at Lancaster, wrote with colleagues: 'If no change in control or transmission happens, then we expect further outbreaks to occur in other Chinese cities, and that infections will continue to be exported to international destinations at an increasing rate.

'In 14 days’ time (4 February 2020), our model predicts the number of infected people in Wuhan to be greater than 250 thousand (prediction prediction interval, 164,602 to 351,396).

'We predict the cities with the largest outbreaks elsewhere in China to be Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu. We also predict that by 4 Feb 2020, the countries or special administrative regions at greatest risk of importing infections through air travel are Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea.'

Businesses around China – the world's biggest nation and home to more than one billion people, a seventh of the world's population – are already having to take drastic measures.

Seven movies which were set to premiere over this weekend have cancelled their screenings.

And shops have started to close their branches – international clothing store Uni Qlo has shut down 17 stores in Wuhan city, where the outbreak began and is most dangerous.

Wuhan has now been in lockdown for two days, with residents told not to leave and forced to wear face masks. There is no public transport, major roads have been closed and the airport has been shut down.

Reports from the city described it as a 'ghost town' as streets were deserted at a time when millions would normally be preparing to celebrate.

And at least nine other areas have started to put similar measures in place.

Huanggang, close to Wuhan, is home to more than seven million people and yesterday announced it would shut down its public transport.

Movement of people is also reportedly being restricted in Tiananmen, Ezhou, Zhijiang, Dangyang, Qianjiang, Chibi, Xiantao, Lichuan, Jingmen, Xianning, Yichang and Enshi.

All these places are in the Hubei province, which is the epicenter of the outbreak – Wuhan is the capital. Hubei has a total population of almost 60million people – slightly more than England.

Hubei has by far recorded the most cases – 549 out of the total, according to China Daily – and all but one of the 26 people who have died died in that province.

shame they didn't lock it down sooner, this virus is being spread rapidly by chinese who have evacuated from Wuhan to various parts of the world. The incubation period may be 7 to ten days meaning people who left Wuhan showing no symptoms are now presenting. All people who have left Wuhan in the past two weeks should be suspect along with all those who have been in contact with them

America should lock down our borders as well and while we're at it lock down the Senate chambers....let the Democrat-Communist party members get to know those of the opposite party.

Here's a pretty long (little over an hour) video, but it's packed with current info from this week, as recently as Thursday. They report and show many postings on Chinese versions of Twitter and Facebook from people bragging about how sick they are and still managed to travel and evade the quarantines. Oops.

Coronavirus - Inside info and discussion

Note: the first 7 seconds has no audio, the rest is fine. Links to their various YouTube channel sites are in the More section of this vid - their postings are usually 10-15 minutes long and deal with a very wide range of single-topic issues, including what it's like to be under the thumb of the Chicoms. Portions of this video are cringe-worthy, and I'm not talking about the dead bodies on the sidewalk. So if you're very squeamish or eating while watching, heads-up.

I've followed these guys for a couple of years to pick up information about real Chinese life from street level. These two started as independent video bloggers about 10 years ago, connected and have teamed up to produce hundreds of videos, including a couple of feature-length films of their motorcycle travels to every province in China. One is Midwest American, the other South African.

They speak, read and write Chinese fluently, have married Chinese women (one of whom is a Chinese doctor) and have many connections there, although they have left China because of increasing crackdowns on foreigners, live in the USA but now travel Taiwan, Vietnam and other parts of Asia instead. Their reporting on China has become far more explicit and blunt, since they are no longer subjected to direct oppression for broadcasting information, although they both still have marriage-related family there.

I trust their reporting, much of which is directly from Chinese doctors they've known for a long time. The situation appears to be far worse than is reported, as you'd expect from those Chicom tyrants. It's important to note that a large percentage of ordinary Chinese are completely ignorant of the principles of hygiene and disease spread, a lot of them refuse to believe it even after being informed.

I await news of the undoubtedly-shoddy "hospitals" they claim to be building in 10 days falling to the ground - their reports on Chinese construction materials and methods are shocking, including a cultural opposition to building maintenance. Did you know the Chicoms have torn down thousand-year-old buildings and monuments and replaced them with new copies, to look "prettier for the tourists"?

Taking a cue from the video I linked above, which said even Amazon USA is sold out of respirator masks because they're either being sent to Chinese family members or hoarded for gouging sales there, I checked it out.

Indeed, Amazon seems to be sold out of N95 masks after checking a dozen or so listings. So I ordered a box of 10 3M masks from Amazon directly, priced at $17.25 (vs up to $55 from third parties), just to see how long it'll take to get them. Camelcamelcamel.com tells me the price has mostly been in the $14-16 range the last three months, so they haven't jacked them up tremendously in response to hoarding. Right now though, they're hilariously tagged as "#1 in Computers and Accessories" sales.

I have a few left here from previous projects, so don't really need them even if the virus-zombie apocalypse starts to unfold, but it's an experiment to see how fast capitalism can respond to panic buying for restocking the supply channel. I'll try to remember to follow up once Amazon ships and gives me a delivery ETA.

I'm still trying to suss out how even these particle-filter masks could stop virus penetration - IIRC those critters are the smallest living "organisms" on Earth.

I've followed these guys for a couple of years to pick up information about real Chinese life from street level.

Same.

What I learned from these China vloggers is that there is no hand soap or toilet paper available in China (except where foreigners stay). Even the hospitals do not have hand soap.

The seafood market (aka wet market) where the virus is said to originate, like all wet markets, is completely devoid of sanitation. Food is placed on the ground where people spit. No one wears gloves or washes their hands. The markets sell all manner of live animals for consumption...dogs, cats, rodents, just about anything that walks, crawls, or flies.

What is really surprising...that there aren't even more deadly epidemics.

The Chinese are a very intelligent race of people...would it kill them to establish clean grocery stores, adopt modern western style bathroom facilities, and for cryin' out loud, please stop eating dogs and cats.

The biggest problem, China is a Godless nation, thanks especially to Communism, but also to the historic worship of dead idols.

Depending on how this goes, we may have a very good rebuttal to all those poli-sci leftists who demand that we all move to super-dense cities and ride the bus. For The Children.

I live in the woods; the nearest 4-lane road is 37 miles and we have 6 traffic lights in our county, which is about half the size of Los Angeles county. We do have an official international airport, it can handle up to private jets, but it has no control tower.

www.the-scientist.com/new...ade-coronavirus-triggers- debate-34502

Ralph Baric, an infectious-disease researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, last week (November 9) published a study on his team’s efforts to engineer a virus with the surface protein of the SHC014 coronavirus, found in horseshoe bats in China, and the backbone of to one that causes human-like severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in mice. The hybrid virus could infect human airway cells and caused disease in mice, according to the team’s results, which were published in Nature Medicine. The results demonstrate the ability of the SHC014 surface protein to bind and infect human cells, validating concerns that this virus—or other coronaviruses found in bat species—may be capable of making the leap to people without first evolving in an intermediate host, Nature reported. They also reignite a debate about whether that information justifies the risk of such work, known as gain-of-function research. “If the [new] virus escaped, nobody could predict the trajectory,” Simon Wain-Hobson, a virologist at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, told Nature. In October 2013, the US government put a stop to all federal funding for gain-of-function studies, with particular concern rising about influenza, SARS, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). “NIH [National Institutes of Health] has funded such studies because they help define the fundamental nature of human-pathogen interactions, enable the assessment of the pandemic potential of emerging infectious agents, and inform public health and preparedness efforts,” NIH Director Francis Collins said in a statement at the time. “These studies, however, also entail biosafety and biosecurity risks, which need to be understood better.” Baric’s study on the SHC014-chimeric coronavirus began before the moratorium was announced, and the NIH allowed it to proceed during a review process, which eventually led to the conclusion that the work did not fall under the new restrictions, Baric told Nature. But some researchers, like Wain-Hobson, disagree with that decision. The debate comes down to how informative the results are. “The only impact of this work is the creation, in a lab, of a new, non-natural risk,” Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist and biodefence expert at Rutgers University, told Nature. But Baric and others argued the study’s importance. “[The results] move this virus from a candidate emerging pathogen to a clear and present danger,” Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance, which samples viruses from animals and people in emerging-diseases hotspots across the globe, told Nature.

Following up, I got the following notice from Amazon last night about my test order of N95 masks:

We're unable to fulfill your order for the item(s) listed above because it is no longer available. As a result, we've cancelled it from your order.

No longer on a waitlist - they've dumped the order completely. There's no way it's "no longer available" or out of production, they've just given up on finding any.
