U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle for the reverse of the silver American Eagle was introduced when the series debuted in 1986.

The U.S. Mint is moving ahead with plans to redesign the reverses of the silver and gold American Eagles for 2021 to accommodate the use of anti-counterfeiting technology at the production stage.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has given the Mint the green light to replace the designs, which have appeared on the coins since their release in 1986.

“We are planning a redesign of the American Eagle Silver and Gold coins in honor of the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle program. The details of this redesign will be announced in the near future. There is currently no plan to redesign the American Eagle platinum or palladium coins,” said Todd Martin, acting chief for the Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications.
The redesigned reverses will be introduced first on bullion releases dated 2021. The anti-counterfeiting measures will be introduced later on the Proof and other collector versions.

“Since the early days of the Republic, the Mint has been very sensitive to the threat of counterfeiting,” Martin said. “We have made progress in developing state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting measures for bullion coins, and are prepared to implement changes that will enhance the security of the gold and silver bullion coin program.”

Martin said Mint Director David J. Ryder “has assembled an anti-counterfeiting interdisciplinary team within the Mint that is researching and reviewing both overt and covert options to enhance the protection of our bullion products. In addition to improving anti-counterfeiting measures, we are reaching out to educate and inform the numismatic community and consumers about potential counterfeits, thus ensuring continued confidence in our bullion products for years to come.”

The American Eagle silver dollar’s Heraldic Eagle reverse was rendered by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti, who retired as chief engraver in 2010. The Family of Eagles motif legislated for the gold American Eagle reverse was contributed by sculptor Miley Busiek, now Miley Busiek Frost.

Other Mints have acted

The Royal Canadian Mint employs its DNA technology on its Maple Leaf precious metals coins. Its website states: “Every die used to produce the Gold and Silver Maple Leaf coins is laser micro-engraved with an anti-counterfeiting security mark: a textured maple leaf. Our registration process — digital non-destructive activation (DNA) technology — captures images encrypted with a string of codes, and stores these in our secure database.”

Using a specialized device secured from the Royal Canadian Mint, approved Bullion DNA dealers can verify the authenticity of registered gold and silver Maple Leaf bullion coins.

In 2017, the RCM introduced the DNA technology for production of the $1 and $2 circulating coins.
The Royal Mint in Great Britain introduced in 2017 its Integrated Secure Identification Systems technology, which reportedly cost more than £2 million and took four years to develop, for use in the production of the circulating £1 coin.

It is not publicly known what level of security the United States Mint is pursuing in its anti-counterfeiting campaign to battle the influx of counterfeit American Eagles into the numismatic market, primarily from China.

Poster Comment:

Lil' Stevie Mnuchin is planning on raping Ronald Reagan's American Silver Eagle in 2021, if Donnell is reelected. Any other president would fire him but Trump will let him screw up the obverse too and chip Walking Liberty.

It's only a matter of time until Donnell's Deep State takes all of the silver out of them, like LBJ did in 1965.

They hate us because we're free.

And because the voters elected Trump instead of "sum" run of the mill Leftard POS.

"sum" run of the mill Leftard POS

Buy ASE's now, before the traditional style price goes higher.

The old ones will become worth more once the NWO Trumpkin leftard POS version, starts getting pumped out in 2021.

Love those culls, they're random dates, often in BU condition.

Taking the silver out of silver bullion coins makes no sense. The coins aren't meant for circulation, but to be stored as standard-sized and measured bullion. Taking the silver out would mean nobody would buy the coins.

For a bullion coin held for intrinsic value, as long as the weight and purity were correct I don't think I'd care if it's "counterfeit".
What difference, at this point, would it make? Almost our whole f'ing government is counterfeit now.

999 Fine Silver ASE's will always be worth, at a minimum the face value of One US Dollar. It's about the only modern US currency that's actually worth something.

Real money.

I've got a 1971 Eisenhower 40% Silver "Blue Ike" dollar S mint mark which originally came in a blue envelope along with a blue token. Worth about $8 these days in average condition.

'71 "Blue Ike" uncirculated from the US Mint. This cost about $1.95 in the day. The "Brown Ike" Proof version was $5.00.

Last I knew, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has a face value of 5 dollars.

But what you say is true as it relates to US currency, except the gold American Eagles also have a value. And, don't forget, all US coins prior to 1964 all have a .90% of silver, 1965 being the first year the coins did not contain 90% silver, with the exception of certain commemorative issues.

Of course, I guess it depends on what you consider as " modern " US currency.

Yes, if the weight & purity were correct, I would think even if it were counterfeit, it would just be simply a " silver round ".

That said, I am familiar with a test for gold, but do not know of one for silver. Although I would imagine there is one, I just am not familiar with it.

Professional dealers use electronic equipment that measure electrical conductivity... That and accurately measuring diameter, thickness, weight & density helps filter out the bogus ones...

Of course it's still possible to get "counterfeits" that are made frome the same .9999 pure or 90% Ag / 10% Cu alloy as the real thing (Scammers do that to try to cash in on the high collector value of extremely rare dates) But if they're just trying to substitute cheaper metal for silver, it's damn near impossible to get all the dimensions, weight & conductivity within normal tolerance.. usually something would be waaaaay out of bounds.
