Holly's Crickets seem to provide the needed insect allusion.

Yeah, Webb's vocals are an acquired taste. Kind of like Leo Kottke. Man that guy can sure play guitar but I'm not a fan of his vocals. I was mistaken about the original song - it was by Big Joe Williams, in fact Webb describes meeting him late in the song. But I never get tired of this song, from almost any cover. Same here. The site Secondhandsongs lists 172 versions of "Baby Please Don't Go" - I have maybe 9 or so in my media player. I read somewwhere that it is the most covered song ever.

I just pinged my server and found 5: - Muddy Waters, studio I've been mulling over picking up the Checkboard Lounge recordings and have a small pile of Amazon digital credits burning a hole in my digital pocket, so just might pop for it. Bought the armadillo Kottke album back in the '70s as I recall (and later another copy for my Dad), and one or two more after; I agree with you - his instrumental tracks ring my bell louder. "Best of Instrumentals" is his only digital album in my collection. That 'Delta Moon' version cooks; thanks.
Is that the one from the mid 60's when he fronted the band "Them"? Yeah, that one's good. I also like the Nugent version. Glad you liked that DM cover. Saw Kottke back in the mid 70's when I was stationed at Offutt AFB in Omaha. Great show.

In March 1957, John Lennon, then aged sixteen, formed a skiffle group with several friends from Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool. They briefly called themselves the Blackjacks, before changing their name to the Quarrymen after discovering that a respected local group was already using the other name.[3] Fifteen-year-old Paul McCartney joined them as a rhythm guitarist shortly after he and Lennon met that July.[4] In February 1958, McCartney invited his friend George Harrison to watch the band. The fifteen-year-old auditioned for Lennon, impressing him with his playing, but Lennon initially thought Harrison was too young for the band.
