Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico. The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended. Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to....

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

....stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Thank you!

Poster Comment:

Time for an old pic of Donald, giving an opponent a real haircut.

This is really major news if Trump has finally gotten Mexico to sign the third-country agreement just as Canada did many years ago. No other president has even gotten Mexico to agree to discuss signing such an agreement. (3 images)

Trump's other objective was to get Mexico to agree to purchase U.S. farm products with no restrictions placed on American ag exports to Mexico.

If Trump gets the ag agreement and the third-country-asylum agreement with Mexico, he will have accomplished more than anyone could have expected. I'm seeing people like Ben Shapiro and GOP senators like Sasse and Rubio and others, all doing a 180 to praise Trump because they were so sure that Trump couldn't get any of these things done.

Thanks to Monsanto, US food is junk Mexico would be better off without. Maybe the GMO crap will be discontinued though.

Monsanto is as evil a corporation as anything you could name. However, GMO foods are not inherently evil or wrong. They are no greater a departure from traditional foods that have been continuously improved through careful breeding over thousands of years.

Here's a 2014 article on just how much some of our most familiar foods have changed over thousands of years.

Vox: Here's what 9,000 years of breeding has done to corn, peaches, and other crops

And Frankenfoods do sometimes fail over time, like these apples you've known all your life.

The Atlantic: The Awful Reign of the Red Delicious

The modern red tomato has some similar problems to the modern red apple.

Many former enemies of GMO foods have changed their position. Like these 100 Nobel laureates, trying to get Greenpeace to stop its insane and cruel campaign to stop Golden Rice.

Vox: More than 100 Nobel laureates are calling on Greenpeace to end its anti-GMO campaign, 2016

That's very much debatable. I'm well aware that many crops would not exist without human doctoring over centuries -- corn, strawberries, bananas to name a few -- but never before Monsanto were such modifications made through direct modification of DNA. Before then, it was simple breeding and selective pollination and yes splicing differing plants together.

The worst part of Monsanto is that they engineered -- if that's even an applicable term for how they go about making new life forms -- a plant that would survive their their pesticides & herbicides. What a great service to humanity that is.

A legacy tomato that has been developed by generations of selective breeding is far superior in taste and texture to the GMO crap you find in grocery stores.

They might not look as good visually, but they're superb. 5 out of 5 tomatoes rating!

Some relevant tweets this week:

Privileged to welcome the Mexican delegation to the @WhiteHouse today. Negotiations will continue. Progress was made but as @POTUS said “not nearly enough.” @SecPompeo, @DHSMcAleenan, & I made clear: Mexico must do more to address the urgent crisis at our Southern Border. pic.twitter.com/u3uljnebrh— Vice President Mike Pence (@VP) June 5, 2019

As the Mexican delegation sits down to talk migration with the US Administration in DC - on the Southern Mexico border a ‘caravan’ of (AP says) around 1000 people is intercepted by Mex officials.
Perhaps the biggest signal they could give of compliance with Pres. Trump’s wishes. pic.twitter.com/bgknGT1cmb— John Holman (@johnholman100) June 5, 2019

WaPo: U.S./Mexico close to a deal to avoid tariffs. Mexico has proposed sending 6,000 troops to its southern border w/ Guatemala and what sounds like a modified version of a “safe third country” agreement. Unclear how close or if it will satisfy Trump. https://t.co/RmJhkCtW4k— Robbie Whelan (@RWhelanWSJ) June 6, 2019

Meanwhile in other news #Mexico suddenly willing to discuss changing asylum rules & border enforcement including migrants being required to seek asylum in first country they enter rather than in the U.S & Mexico sending 6K troops to border with Guatemalahttps://t.co/hvZf3SmvTX— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) June 7, 2019

And Trump got this done while overseas, wining and dining with the royal family and celebrating D-Day with a few of our surviving vets.

More of the agreement is now posted at the State Department:

Townhall, 6/7/19:

According to the new agreement, which is posted on the State Department website, Mexico will be deploying national guard troops throughout the country and to the border and will be "taking decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks." The two countries will also reportedly be working closely to follow Migrant Protection Protocols.

"This means that those crossing the U.S. Southern Border to seek asylum will be rapidly returned to Mexico where they may await the adjudication of their asylum claims," State explains. "In response, Mexico will authorize the entrance of all of those individuals for humanitarian reasons, in compliance with its international obligations, while they await the adjudication of their asylum claims. Mexico will also offer jobs, healthcare and education according to its principles."

It sounds like Trump got the third-country-refugee policy he was after, the one that no other president could even get Mexico to discuss, let alone negotiate. And Mexico pretended it was non-negotiable until just the last day or so. They didn't give in so easily.

Trump is likely to restore the foreign aid to Mexico's southern neighbors and might even increase it some. That may be something that Mexico did get from Trump (if you follow the backchannel diplo chatter).

I agree that Monsanto's plans to dominate the corn market with their Roundup Ready™ products was pure evil.

And now that weeds are developing resistance to Roundup, why, Monsanto is all ready to deploy another Franken-weedkiller and the matching crops to use with the new Franker-weedkiller.

As it was with Microsoft, it is their business practices as a monopoly that just buys U.S. senators and regulators and presidents by the dozen that is why Monsanto is an enemy of humanity and one of the most loathsome corporations ever to exist.

We need to crush Monsanto's monopoly and outlaw their outrageous litigation habits against other seed companies and against farmers who had the bad judgment to be downwind from a Monsanto-planted field.

If you want a Monsanto thread, post it. This has gone way off-topic already. Unless that was your intent in mentioning Monsanto. Trump didn't sell Mexico to Monsanto or anything close to it. And the agreement doesn't seem to include anything about ag policy. Presumably, that will be part of the final phase of NAFTA v2.0 or it will be dropped as a demand from Trump if Mexico honors its commitments on controlling migrants/refugees/invaders coming across its southern border.

IOW: BTTT

Just for background, here is tonight's statement, fresh from the Foggy Bottom website:

U.S.-Mexico Joint Declaration

The United States and Mexico met this week to address the shared challenges of irregular migration, to include the entry of migrants into the United States in violation of U.S. law. Given the dramatic increase in migrants moving from Central America through Mexico to the United States, both countries recognize the vital importance of rapidly resolving the humanitarian emergency and security situation. The Governments of the United States and Mexico will work together to immediately implement a durable solution.

As a result of these discussions, the United States and Mexico commit to:

Mexican Enforcement Surge

Mexico will take unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, to include the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border. Mexico is also taking decisive action to dismantle human smuggling and trafficking organizations as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks. Additionally, the United States and Mexico commit to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including information sharing and coordinated actions to better protect and secure our common border.

Migrant Protection Protocols

The United States will immediately expand the implementation of the existing Migrant Protection Protocols across its entire Southern Border. This means that those crossing the U.S. Southern Border to seek asylum will be rapidly returned to Mexico where they may await the adjudication of their asylum claims.

In response, Mexico will authorize the entrance of all of those individuals for humanitarian reasons, in compliance with its international obligations, while they await the adjudication of their asylum claims. Mexico will also offer jobs, healthcare and education according to its principles.

The United States commits to work to accelerate the adjudication of asylum claims and to conclude removal proceedings as expeditiously as possible.

Further Actions

Both parties also agree that, in the event the measures adopted do not have the expected results, they will take further actions. Therefore, the United States and Mexico will continue their discussions on the terms of additional understandings to address irregular migrant flows and asylum issues, to be completed and announced within 90 days, if necessary.

Ongoing Regional Strategy

The United States and Mexico reiterate their previous statement of December 18, 2018, that both countries recognize the strong links between promoting development and economic growth in southern Mexico and the success of promoting prosperity, good governance and security in Central America. The United States and Mexico welcome the Comprehensive Development Plan launched by the Government of Mexico in concert with the Governments of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to promote these goals. The United States and Mexico will lead in working with regional and international partners to build a more prosperous and secure Central America to address the underlying causes of migration, so that citizens of the region can build better lives for themselves and their families at home.

hehe.... My most recent post was #4 on the thread, and in that short time I managed to take it "way off-topic". hehe

I guess I just can't let a good Monsanto bashing opportunity go to waste.

If this holds, then it's a good move by Trump. No question. I guess he does best in foreign negotiations when the Pentagon and CIA aren't leaning on him.
