Poster comment: At present, Web domain name registration is handled by one of many registration services. Domain names work so long as the registration service that handles it continues to service the domain name in accordance with the wishes of the person or company that registered the domain name.
But law enforcement and/or state entities that have power to compel these registration services to close web sites down can seize web sites and force them off line. Sometimes this is reasonable and morally called for, but other times it may be an abuse of power that self-serving government agents carry out in their own self-interests.
Unstoppable Domains purports to create a blockchain based domain name registration service. Blockchain technology is decentralized technology which means there is no central registration service that can be tapped by any entity, government controlled or otherwise, to alter the information it contains. So a blockchain based domain name registration service would mean domain names using it can not be seized without the consent of the party possessing the encryption keys for the domain name.
This uses the same technology as bitcoin/cryptocurrency. I predicted this as a development for web domains and it should shortly be online. At some point, social media giants like FB could similarly lose their monopoly control status of social media content using the same technology.
