This music video was filmed in 1985, July 27th in Exton, PA (not far from Philly) at a Drive-In theater that had been closed down already for a few years. I will eventually post some info about that shoot and making of the music video, which often aired on MTV.
One You Tube comment: "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.... Life was simpler, happier and just all around better." Who wouldn't agree?
As I clearly recall, In 1985 the future was still positive, sunny and full of optimism as Ronald Reagan promised. The Gipper was just beginning his second term...
Who had any inkling that the America, culture AND the freedom we'd always known and still been rolling strong by mid-1980s would suddenly and rudely be amBUSHed by 1989? It would never be the same after that.
What do you see in the video? What's the vibe?
Happy young people. Celebrating life, love and song. Clean fun. Everyone together.
There's nothing "edgy," no dark message, no overt sexuality on display, no social message.
What DON'T we see?
That's right -- NO grim faces. NO Unhappiness. Rage. NO Self-loathing and hate. NO confusion. NO confrontation, signs or protests. NO Divisiveness. And NO rainbow flags or two guys molesting each other. Just...a bunch of young people relishing the company each other and enjoying themselves.
*NOTE: It's hard to believe, but this video obviously bother someone at G00gle HQ so much that one particular commenter at You Tube has just claimed he was not permitted to share this video. This (yes THIS!) content was flagged as "Offensive." SMH.
There's a '66 Impala in the vid -- the car's trunk used to "smuggle" a couple other teens into the drive-in. I owned a 1966 Impala back in 1976. Bought it for $100. Bald tires, leaky back window, reeking of mildew, just AM radio. Good times.
What's amazing it you think about it; It was only a 10-year old car but already a beat up, dying relic. 10-year old cars of today are expensive. But that's considering their durability and shelf-life is so long compared to the planned- obsolescent wheels of the 1960s.
