Updated at 11:53 a.m. ET

In a rather unusual campaign move, Sen. Elizabeth Warren has released the results of a DNA test that she says provides "strong evidence" of Native American ancestry dating back six to 10 generations, addressing a controversy that has followed her for years.

The results were part of an elaborate strategy to end questions about her ancestry, possibly in anticipation of a 2020 presidential bid. In addition to the DNA analysis that fit with family stories, Warren also released a campaign-style video with clips of President Trump mocking her and vignettes from her family history.

YouTube

At a rally in Montana this past July, Trump taunted Warren for her claims of Native American ancestry, calling her "Pocahontas." He suggested that if he were to debate her in 2020, he would give her one of those take-home DNA kits "they sell on television for $2."

YouTube

"I will give you a million dollars to your favorite charity paid for by Trump if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian," Trump added, as the crowd cheered. But on Monday morning, the president was asked about the challenge and falsely told reporters, "I didn't say that."

Warren, who has had a long-standing feud with the president, challenged him on Twitter Monday morning, asking that the bet be paid up to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center.

After Trump denied making that $1 million pledge, Warren responded by tweeting, "Having some memory problems, @realDonaldTrump? Should we call for a doctor?"

Warren's DNA analysis, conducted by Stanford University researcher Carlos Bustamante, found that the "vast majority" of Warren's lineage is of European ancestry. But he also writes that the results "strongly support the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor in the individual's pedigree, likely in the range of 6-10 generations ago."

The Republican National Committee mocked Warren's disclosure, saying the test revealed only a "minuscule percentage" of Native American ancestry that still leaves unanswered questions.

"Senator Warren's latest 'disclosure' is a glaring signal that she recognizes this issue is going to be a major problem for her all-but-announced presidential campaign," said RNC spokesman Michael Reed in a statement. "Having as little as 1/512th Native American ties does not give you the right to claim minority status. And today's disclosure still does nothing to answer the question as to why she started checking the box as a minority in the years before she made it to the Ivy League, and went back to being white after being hired by Harvard Law."

The RNC also jumped on a correction from The Boston Globe. The paper originally reported that the probability of Warren's Native American ancestry ranges from 1/32 to 1/512, but now reports the low end of that range is actually 1/1,024.

The White House also tried to quickly dismiss the results. "I know that everybody likes to pick their junk science or sound science depending on the conclusion," White House adviser Kellyanne Conway told reporters Monday morning. "But I haven't looked at the DNA test, and it really doesn't interest me."

Bustamante, who received his doctorate from Harvard University and was awarded a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," is widely respected in the field of genetics.

By taking the DNA test, Warren is showing how seriously she is considering a run for president. She's expected to easily win her re-election to the Senate this November and has said she'll take a "hard look" at the presidency after the midterms.

In September, Warren released personnel files from her appointments at various law schools in hopes of answering questions about whether she benefited from her Native American ancestry in hiring.

Warren has long been dogged with questions about her family history. They date back to her 2012 Massachusetts Senate race against Republican Scott Brown, who accused her of being dishonest about her heritage to get a professional edge.

"Professor Warren claimed that she was a Native American, a person of color," he said during a debate. "And as you can see, she's not.

Warren responded by saying that her ancestry was family lore among relatives.

YouTube

"As a kid, I never asked my mom for documentation when she talked about our Native American heritage. What kid would? But I knew my father's family didn't like that she was part Cherokee and part Delaware, so my parents had to elope," she said, reiterating that she hadn't gotten any benefits because of her heritage.

Warren has more specifically added in the past that her great-great-great grandmother was part Native American.

Pocahontas is at best 1/32 to 1/512th(no earlier than 6-10 generations back, That's 200-300years ago at best) Indian blood but there still is no guaranty she has Indian blood.

She is whitey trying to claim she is Indian! LMAO

https://www.kjrh.com/news/local-news/cherokee-nation-issues-statement-on-sen-elizabeth-warren-s-dna-test-results

"A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person's ancestors were indigenous to North or South America. Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is prove[n]. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage."

Where is the section on high cheekbones?

https://library.municode.com/nc/cherokee_indians_eastern_band/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIICOOR_CH49EN

Chapter 49 - ENROLLMENT[1]

Sec. 49-1. - Authority of chapter.

This chapter is enacted pursuant to the authority of the Tribe to establish and regulate membership and enrollment under its sovereign powers as a federally recognized Indian Tribe as well as existing federal statutory law and regulatory authority contained in Title 25 C.F.R. part 75.1-75, 1994, Revision of the Membership Roll of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, North Carolina. This chapter governs future membership, loss of membership, and adoption of members into the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

(Ord. No. 284, 8-2-1996)

[...]

(d) Proof of lineage. The burden of proof is on the applicant. The application for membership must be accompanied by: a county or state certified birth certificate issued by the appropriate governmental entity where the birth occurred, and the certified results of a DNA test establishing the probability of paternity or maternity of the applicant from a lab acceptable to the Enrollment Committee and establishing the biological connection to any relative claimed in the lineage of the applicant when there has been a generational gap in enrollment status for a direct lineal descendant of the applicant.

(1) DNA testing requirements:

(A) For testing paternity and maternity the testing must occur directly between the applicant and the alleged mother and father. For testing biological connection to a direct lineal ancestor when a generational gap in enrollment status is present in the enrollment records, testing must occur directly between the applicant and a relative from any source that will provide a sufficient probability of relatedness to the direct lineal ancestor for whom a gap in enrollment status is identified in the record.

(B) When a parent of an applicant is unavailable for DNA testing the Enrollment Committee may accept the certified results of a DNA test between the applicant and both of the missing parent's biological parents (applicant's grandparents) or other relatives to establish the sufficient probability of lineage.

(i) For purposes of this section, "unavailable" shall mean:

(1) The identity or whereabouts of the parent(s) is unknown and/or is unable to be obtained;

(2) The parent(s) is uncooperative and refuses to consent to DNA testing; or

(3) The parent(s) is deceased, as evidenced by a certified death certificate.

(C) A certified copy of the test results must be submitted by the testing lab directly to the Enrollment Office.

(D) The applicant is responsible for all fees related to the DNA test.

(E) DNA testing required for all applicants, including adoptees.

The Scientist Warren Used Didn’t Test Native American DNA

Amber Athey | Media and Breaking News Editor
The Daily Caller

The DNA scientist who completed an ancestry test for Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren was unable to use Native American DNA in his examination.

Warren apparently felt compelled to get her DNA tested after years of attacks from opponents who say she falsely claimed to have Cherokee ties. President Donald Trump has referred to the Senator as “Pocahontas.”

According to a report by the Boston Globe, there is no Native American DNA available for genetic testing “because Native American leaders have asked tribal members not to participate in genetic databases.” (RELATED: Boston Globe Issues Major Correction On Liz Warren’s Ancestry Claims)

Therefore, in order to test for Native American ancestry, genetic researchers have to use samples from other parts of the world.

Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor, used samples from Mexico, Peru, and Colombia to attempt to calculate how much Native American ancestry is in Warren’s DNA.

“To make up for the dearth of Native American DNA, Bustamante used samples from Mexico, Peru, and Colombia to stand in for Native American. That’s because scientists believe that the groups Americans refer to as Native American came to this land via the Bering Strait about 12,000 years ago and settled in what’s now America but also migrated further south,” the Boston Globe explained.

According to the American Indian and Alaska Native Genetics Resource Center, no DNA test can “prove” that someone is American Indian because there are no unique genes for American Indian ancestry.
