Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his wife Cindy (AP)

As Arizonans prepare for their final salute to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Republicans and political pundits in the state privately tell Newsmax they expect the appointment of his wife, Cindy, to succeed him in the Senate.

Of course, no one in the Grand Canyon State who spoke to us wants to go on record discussing what will happen when the ailing McCain no longer holds his seat. But those who did, agree almost unanimously, Cindy McCain following John in the Senate through appointment by Gov. Doug Ducey, R-Ariz., is a near certainty.

"I've always assumed that was the arrangement," said a friend of the McCain family since John's 1973 return from captivity in Vietnam.

A former Republican senator who served with McCain agreed:

"I don't know if this [succession] has been formalized, but that's what people who know John tell me."

(Both of those who spoke to Newsmax did so under promise of anonymity).

One source close to the McCain family said supporters of the senator have quietly let Gov. Ducey know Cindy is the choice of "Team McCain."

Others mentioned for appointment include: Ducey's top aide Kirk Adams, a former speaker of the state House of Representatives; and Karrin Taylor Robson, multi-millionaire businesswoman and member of the State Board of Regents.

Because of the time factor involved in a Senate seat opening in Arizona, speculation has begun to mount about what will happen when the Senate seat Republican McCain has held since 1986 finally is open.

Should the seat become open before June 1, state law requires a special election this fall. Democrats from Phoenix to Washington, D.C., make little secret of their desire of having another Senate seat on the fall ballot in 2018 because they sense it is a good year for the party outside the White House.

However, if the vacancy in the seat occurs after June 1, state law says the appointee may serve more than two years and a special election would be held in 2020. (McCain won his sixth term in 2016 and this term will not expire until 2022).

Although Cindy McCain is best-known as the wife of the maverick senator and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, friends remind us she is also an accomplished business and community leader. Following the death of her father, Jim Hensley, in 2000, Cindy assumed the chairmanship and majority control of Hensley and Company (one of the nation's largest Anheuser-Busch beer distributorships).

Moreover, she has been an active strategist and campaigner for her husband since his first bid for the U.S. House in 1982. Veteran GOP activists believe the Hensley family's widespread financial and political contacts were pivotal to McCain — who had lived in Arizona less than a year — winning a hard-fought primary over three seasoned office-holders.

Since 1931, eight wives of U.S. senators succeeded their husbands. Often, the appointment has been seen as a sign senators can extend their power after their death. Democrats Rose Long of Louisiana (named to succeed husband, Huey, following his assassination in 1935) and Muriel Humphrey (appointed to replace late husband, Hubert, in 1978) are cases in point.

The last senatorial wife to assume the office herself was an unusual case.

Following his death in a plane crash in October 2000, Democratic Gov. Mel Carnahan's name remained on the Missouri ballot, and he actually defeated Republican Sen. John Ashcroft. Missouri's new governor later declared the seat vacant and appointed Carnahan's widow, Jean, to fill it. (1 image)

Most of us are, as well; this is especially true for voting. In this case Cindy McCain will be selected by the Governor of Arizona to fill McCain's shoes until the next election cycle.

Cindy might be a place-keeper,but she is a political nobody with a bad record of using charity money to buy drugs, and who knows what else.

Their daughter,on the other hand is VERY active politically, and a full-fledged left-wing loon posing as a conservative Republican on BaBa WaWa's teebee show every day.

I'm guessing if she wants it,with her fame and with the McLuntic and wife's political connections and money in Az,that the seat will be hers once it comes open for election.

The Stain just started a new term last year so she would get a free run of 4.5 years to fill out his term.

OTOH, it would raise the chance of a Dem win in AZ considerably to allow the seat to be filled this year. They're already defending Flake's senate seat this fall.

So Cindy McCain might not be as bad as the alternatives. Like her husband continuing to be alive, losing the seat to a Dem, etc.

I'm guessing if she wants it,with her fame and with the McLuntic and wife's political connections and money in Az,that the seat will be hers once it comes open for election.

Ben Domenech of The Federalist just married her last fall. Maybe he wants to run for office the old-fashioned way in Arizona: get Cindy (or her daddy) to pay for your campaign and make introductions down at the country club.

Could be. I can't think of any other viable reason anyone would want to marry her,and some people will do anything for power and wealth.

Make no mistake about it,though. If she decides to run,she will win by pulling in most of the Dim votes,as well as the alleged Republican People's Party votes, too.

The pull of tv fame may be too strong for her to resist, though. Right now she is on national teebee 5 days a week, with practically everybody telling her how smart and beautiful she is.

If she runs, it won't be until 2022. She may just want to keep the McCain seat in family hands but not continue to do it herself.

I think Meghan has shot her mouth off too much to get elected. But her husband, although less famous, is a more serious thinker and has a clean enough record to get elected.

However, the Stain did have two sons with his second wife, Cindy. They are a few years younger than Meghan. The older one is named John Sidney McCain IV. So don't be too surprised if they pop out of the woodwork to run for Senate in 2022 to replace Cindy after she held the Senate seat for 4.5 years without ever being elected to anything.

Were they born with a third eye in the center of their foreheads,or something?

This is the first I have ever heard of them.

The Stain has something like 6-7 kids. 3 with the first wife, 3 with the second, then that Asia girl from overseas that they adopted. Recall how the Asian girl was used in SC push-polling by Karl Rove having pollsters call the voters up and ask them if that daughter of McCain's was a Vietnamese love child, would they still want to vote for him? The Stain lost SC and Bush cruised on to win the nomination easily.

I think that John Sidney McCain IV was his fifth child, his second with Cindy. His first with Cindy was Meghan. I think that JSM IV is a Navy man, maybe a pilot. And has a black wife maybe.

You can see why I would think that Cindy might try to hand the seat on to him in 2022. JSM IV turned 30 in the last few years since Meghan is the oldest of Cindy's children; they were all mid-Eighties kids, I think.

I think you are probably wrong about the black daughter-in-law. If she existed, she would have been on the campaign trail with him, standing right beside him for photo ops.

Not that it matters. I don't want to see anyone related to McLunatic in any respect back in the US Senate once that evil old shithead dies.

The wedding photo:

He's a Navy chopper pilot and lieutenant, she's a captain in the USAF Reserve. They met when both were on Guam on regular duty.

I'll be damned! Hard to believe that couple weren't prominent on his campaign trail. I know they are on Active Duty and prohibited from campaigning, but there is nothing to prevent McLunatic from putting them on posters as family members.

Jesus! Take a look at John and Cindy's hands! I've seen better hands in monster movies.

Do you really think John 4 would be willing to give up his virtually guaranteed Admiral's Flag to be just one more politician?

BTW,a Lt in the Navy is often the same rank as a Captain in the USAF,US Army,or USMC. I am adding this for the people who don't know.

If he's still a mere chopper pilot and a lieutentant, he doesn't have a future as the third Admiral McCain.

Politics might be a better venue for him. And Mama still is probably worth half a billion so that helps.

JSM IV was worth at least $25M the day he was born. About like the Kennedys.

Which is one of the reasons he may not be willing to give up following in the family tradition of becoming an Admiral. He can always run for the Senate or for President after retiring as an Admiral, but there is no going back to becoming an Admiral later if he goes into civilian politics.

Don't worry about him being a choppy jockey. He's just having fun,and is the equivalent of a Captain in all the other service branches.

I guess we will know when his next assignment is announced. If it's for one of the advanced anchor clanker schools,he's going for the stars.

Or it could be a staff position with the Chief of Naval Air Operations. I could see him carving out an empire there. Especially if he could use his family connections to pull off having the Navy get attack helicopter squadrons to support the SEAL teams. No,they don't need them, but they have no business going on raids and direct combat missions, either. The USN already has a group for that. They are called the United States Marine Corps. They SPECIFICALLY exist for ground combat, and on land, the SEALS are probably less capable than Force Recon.

I dunno, politics seems more the family business than doing the full Navy gig.

And it may be that the Navy itself would rather have a Navy vet fighting for them in the Senate than serving in the Pentagon at a lesser position of power.

These people are all steeped in politics. The Pentagon is super-political at the top levels. Because it pays off to be super-political.

If you don't think promotions and assignments in the Navy aren't political, you know nothing about the Navy. Not so much for enlisted swine, but for every officer above the grade of LT (jg).

You do know that McStain himself was a naval attache in the Senate, liaising with senators for the Navy. That's what he was doing when he started hooking up with Cindy (while also cheating on his wife with other women too).

People have thought for a long time that the Navy and Cindy's father both managed to persuade him to run for the House, to be a voice for Mob alcohol/gambling interests and for the Navy.

The Stain is a complicated and corrupt creature and it goes well beyond his Keating Five criminality. You may recall that the Reagans hated him for what he did to his first wife. They hired her at the White House and became almost a second family to her. Reagan finally relented and allowed a few photos of him to be taken with McStain walking together in the WH garden but the Reagans never forgave him for what he did to his first wife.

I'm just saying that electing a John Sydney McCain IV to the AZ seat in 2022 might be a very attractive proposition for the Navy, more than having some chopper pilot with a famous lineage pursuing a Navy career. The Senate gig is much much larger in scope. And more lucrative.
