Title: How A Pathetic Republican Party Is Allowing ‘The Resistance’ To Run The Score — And The Government

Senate Republicans are heading toward midterm elections with control of their chamber and the biggest advantage any majority party has had since 1790. Yet every week, the Democrats are allowed to work just 2.5 days before returning home to duke it out with their Republican challengers. That is, Mitch McConnell is allowing Democrats to hit the campaign trail hard while obstructing 139 of the president’s nominees.

In eight months, eight Republican seats and 26 Democratic seats are up for grabs.

That’s less than one sixth of GOP seats, and more than half of Democrats’ seats, including 10 in states President Donald Trump won in 2016 — half of which by 10 or more points. While three Republicans’ seats will be open elections, every one of the Democrats’ seats is defended by a working senator, or at least should be. Instead of working, however, these senators are clocking into the office late on Monday, generally starting the work week Tuesday morning, and heading back to the trail Thursday, often before lunchtime.

When you account for travel, that’s a full four days “working” from home: speaking with constituents, attending meetings, cutting ribbons, raising money. In other words, campaigning: making the case their Republican challenger should be defeated and they should be re-elected.

Executive governance is out of style. On Friday, while 26 Senate Democrats up for re-election went home to their states or elsewhere to speak and raise money with which to batter Republicans in November, 139 of the White House’s nominees languished in positions from undersecretary for arms control and international security affairs to director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center.

According to the Senate rules Democrats and their Republican enablers love to cite, they have to wait 30 hours after ending debate. This has turned into three or so nominees confirmed a week, averaging 79 days a nominee, with McConnell himself griping that at this rate, it will take 11 years to confirm Trump’s nominees. That’s nearly three weeks longer than the average for President Barack Obama, whose appointees, meanwhile, form the backbone of the “resistance” inside our federal government — “the deep state” that liberals in the media like to pretend is some type of hallucination, possibly caused by “swamp gas.”

There is, however, another way.

Senate rules — specifically, Rule XXII — dictate that during the maximum allowed 30-hours of debate, senators can speak no more than twice, and for no more than an hour total. Senate rules are rarely entertaining, but forcing 30 senators to the floor every single time they wanted to play cute would be good for their health, and put some much-need fire under the Trump-Republican agenda.

With this level of ruthlessness, McConnell would have little difficulty replacing “the resistance” with the president’s nominees. “The rules say the majority leader can force a talking filibuster and limit it to two speeches per senator, so, about an hour per senator if they come down to talk,” Wesley Denton of the Conservative Partnership Institute, which has repeatedly warned of Republican weakness, told The Daily Caller. “They could probably get 10 or more down a week, and instead they’re just gifting it to Democrats.”

It’s true, Mitch McConnell doesn’t have a 60-vote majority in the Senate. It’s true that this Senate has twice as many people over 80 than it’s ever had, and its members’ age and health have made it more difficult to vote more than a few times. But it’s also true that Mitch McConnell has the power to make “the resistance” do their jobs, instead of spending their days in the field campaigning, safe in the knowledge that Obama’s men are still hard at work in this new government of theirs.

Poster Comment:

Trump is dealing with a DEEP STATE and SHADOW government that have compromised him.

Senate and Congress have been compromised as well. The DOJ, FBI, CIA, EPA, IRS, NSA, have been weaponized against the people. We have 17 so called intelligence agencies that spy on Trump. They are spying on all of us as well. We need to do away with them and go to open source intelligence for transparency. The Fed is a foreign agency that has been stealing from us for decades.I believe we better be for changing a few things.

America has enemies to the left and in the middle! It's time for the formation of a third political party. Call it American Party or whatever, but it should attract all those citizens who have had quite enough of both parties. The Democrat-Communist Party is pure evil, but the damned Repubicrat Party is its accomplice.

Just look at the voting record for the LAST Congress! Only one Congressman (Massey, KY) voted 100% of the time to support our Constitution. ALL Democrats were down at zero or slightly above. Most Republicans hovered around 50% of the time. It's ripe now for the launch of a third party considering that Washington, D.C. now resembles Madrid in 1936 with one exception: OUR man is in the White House, but is surrounded by back-stabbing pansies.

Trump COULD fire the Obama appointees, leaving the job open. Then, while his nominees move forward, he COULD let the regular civil service person, the most senior non-political appointee, move up into the office on an interim basis.

And then Trump COULD do something completely different than the precedent.

He COULD call these regular employees, now flighted up due to absence to "acting director" to the White House for meetings, and treat these regular civil servants exactly like the appointed replacement would be treated.

In other words, use the REGULAR CIVIL SERVICE to fill the job immediately, and then have the REGULAR CIVIL SERVICE PERSON come to meet with him in the WHite House.

This bypasses the political class, bypasses Congress completely, and puts a regular person right into cabinet meetings, and speaking as an equal to the cabinet appointees, with the President.

These people will be sitting there because of a political vacancy, but they won't be politicians. and yet they will have the same full POWER as any political appointee.

And these people, without political ambitions, will be dealing directly with the President, and will be impressed by him, and he has the opportunity to deal directly with them, without any political games. They are very likely, most of them, to do very good jobs. And then Trump can simply nominate THEM to the post they have proven they can do.

Instead of rewarding the political class, he COULD get rid of Obama appointees and all the non-political civil service class to advance temporarily to the top - and then get his whole agenda done by professionals WITHOUT giving the sop, or the job, to the political offices, to the appointees.

Louis XIV came to the throne as a minor, and during his minority the whole French government was operated as a political corruption farm, with ministers and stockjobbers, etc.

But when he hit the age of majority, he declared "Je regne seul" - I reign alone - and he dismissed the various noble ministers between him and the people, between him and the civil service, and the King simply dealt directly and personally with the civil servants. Now, they were common folk, accustomed to dealing with the nobles politicians above them. But there was nobody now between them and the King. The effect this had was to make the whole civil service class INTENSELY loyal to the King himself, and a whole lot more efficient.

Because each of the individuals was himself a nobody, who had risen to his post by navigating the civil service administration and understanding its nuts and bolts, they were more efficient at their actual jobs than any political minister could be. And because they were nobodies, briefing the King directly, and being treated like a cabinet minister by the King, provoked intense pride and the desire to do well. It improved the government, cuts costs dramatically (no more lavish parties for the ministers) - much more modest banquets for the civil servants, without all of the political intrigue - a visit by the King - and a loyal civil service.

It has never been done that way by an American President, BUT IT COULD BE. There is no Constitutional BAR to the President not filling posts and simply dealing face-to-face with the career civil servants. You can bet that a career civil servant, who has always been shielded from the President by some political appointee, will try to do a better job for the President than some Obama holdover would.

It would also suddenly yank a lot of power from Congress, in a way that would would spur the Congress to action. All of the Obama people would be gone, and the Civil Service would start answering to the President directly, in person, unfiltered, and not to other politicians.

The whole cabinet could be run that way, in a caretaker fashion. It would INFURIATE the opposition, and light a fire under the President's own party to get politicians in there, since if Trump just deals directly with Civil Servants, all sorts of party patronage to favorite donors goes out the window.

Were Trump to do that, it would also ensure that the civil state operated according to the tastes of the middle class civil servants, as opposed to the political appointees at the heads of the departments.

He's compromised himself with his stupidity and vaudeville act. Half assed reality TV was the top of his game. He has a mind like a spoiled teenager. We need a tough consistent MAN in the white house.

I never said, and neither did I mean to imply, that Massie had a bad conservative cause voting record.

I merely posted his entire voting record for consideration by everyone.

Thanks for your courteous and informative post.

And you're full of shit! You are one of a few here who would be happy with a Hitlery von Rotten administration and all that would entail.
