Sorry for posting this a few minutes late. I had to change my pants after my bowels released.

Amid the usual clatter about sh*tholes and porn stars, this ho-hum tweet floated through my timeline at 1:09 ET.

Was she being pranked? Or pranking everyone else?

Nope. It was happening:
Ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii. Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill. pic.twitter.com/tlJYNwCr1A

— Ryan Ozawa (@hawaii) January 13, 2018

This Emergency Alert just came to all our phones in Hawaii. No other info coming out and hotel has no shelter. Really hoping it’s a false alarm, but if not – send your best vibes this way. #emergencyalert #hawaii pic.twitter.com/JNvIxjQA5p

— Cori Zarek (@corizarek) January 13, 2018

According to one person, sirens started going off in Hawaii. Just like that, on a lazy Saturday afternoon — nuclear war with North Korea. Civilization as we know it was about to change. Millions, mostly North Koreans, would be dead by the end of the day.

Greg Gutfeld’s wife is in Hawaii today and told him there was indeed mass hysteria at her hotel:
this missile thing – wife at hotel said total hysteria/chaos. families evacuating told to seek a shelter. crying. panic. if it's an accident, or NOT – we cannot play this down. even a prankster should be put away for years.

— GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) January 13, 2018

Ten long minutes later came the word: False alarm.
HAWAII – THIS IS A FALSE ALARM. THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE TO HAWAII. I HAVE CONFIRMED WITH OFFICIALS THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE. pic.twitter.com/DxfTXIDOQs

— Tulsi Gabbard (@TulsiGabbard) January 13, 2018

NO missile threat to Hawaii.

— Hawaii EMA (@Hawaii_EMA) January 13, 2018

Here’s what it looked like on Hawaiian television. Having just watched it, I’m now on my third pair of underwear of the day.
The moment the EAS alert interrupted Hawaiian TV is terrifying pic.twitter.com/pVwpCBeRgD

— Timothy Burke (@bubbaprog) January 13, 2018

How did Hawaiians finally discover that it was a false alarm? Some who weren’t watching social media … didn’t:
My son is still panicked from me waking him and going to the closet. The emergency broadcast was never followed by a false alarm alert. I only found it from Twitter. Incredible incompetence. Scary as hell.

— Mike McIntyre (@mcintyremike) January 13, 2018

The follow-up alert declaring a false alarm reportedly took 40 minutes to deliver.

Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz is blaming “human error” but a security outfit claims to have spoken to someone at NORAD and been told that the alert was, and I quote, “Possibly a hack or a very sick joke.” Possibly a hack? The emergency warning system isn’t hack-proof? If this was a hack, it was basically a “Swatting” except with potential nuclear repercussions.

I’ve been using Twitter for news daily since 2009 and can tell you with total confidence that this is the most frightening thing to happen on social media in that time. I wonder how many Hawaiians will need medical treatment because of it. Whoever screwed up should go to prison.

Update: The panic will have been felt most acutely in Hawaii, of course, but the ripple effect is national.
This was my phone when I woke up just now. I'm in Honolulu, #Hawaii and my family is on the North Shore. They were hiding in the garage. My mom and sister were crying. It was a false alarm, but betting a lot of people are shaken. @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/m6EKxH3QqQ

— Sara Donchey (@KPRC2Sara) January 13, 2018

Hawaii’s EMA claims it was a test gone bad:
Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency spokesman said the agency had been performing a standard drill and normally an alert wouldn't be sent, so they suspect a technical issue occurred: "We have absolutely no indication it was any kind of hacking."

— Amber Jamieson (@ambiej) January 13, 2018

Two conspiracy theories to look out for today and going forward. One: It was a hack and the feds are playing it off as a botched drill to try to keep the public calm while they try to catch the culprits. Two: There really was a missile and we shot it down. And now, to avert war, the feds are going to play it off as a false alarm. The “real missile” theory is highly unlikely as other countries would have detected it too and news of the launch would have trickled out somehow. But this is what’s going to circulate online.

That was the writer, being sarcastic.

I'm somewhat amazed that somehow they let this false alarm go on for 40 minutes before they cancelled it. What, they couldn't call the news networks, the local radio stations, put it on Twitter or Facebook for 40 freaking minutes?

Unreal. All those involved need to be fired and replaced. False alarms and malfunctions are part of the problem set in that job; it is why we have equipment drills and siren tests.

Hawaii is a liberal US state. Their announcements are fairely well-known to be filled with shit, similar to some of the shit-holes that Trump referred to just the other day.

Thousands are leaving Hawaii because of the political BS there; in fact, its population is diminishing as fast as the ships and planes take off. Well, except for boris.

The business interests there won't care much. They'll keep the place full of tourists unless there really is an attack.

There always seem to be some form of fascination with Hawaii; and it depends on where you go and what you do.

For the most part, South America is better, cheaper and easier to enjoy.

I'm laughing at the local press, demolishing the head of Hawaii's emergency warning system.

He's babbling like a fool, unusual for an Asian. Obviously, he is unused to the public and press. The local pols are all standing around with him with that deer in the headlights look.

In addition, they are trying to claim that they did send out the text message and that they tried to turn on the sirens. Even though it was a shift-change mistake and someone just hit a button that sent the text. But then why did they also activate the air raid sirens as well? In addition, not all of the sirens worked (a very common failing and the reason why we do hold drills and tests for sirens). And some mobile carriers did relay the alert message but others did not.

The HI governor is the only smooth operator in the bunch. Obviously a practiced liar with people skills.

I just keep laughing. There's a real bitchy reporter that keeps asking one excruciating question after the next. She should get a promotion.

All the liberals said he would and therefore couldn't be trusted. Looks like they may have been wrong. Where are THOSE stories?

I have a copy of it, still watch it every few years. Widmark and Poitier were both quite good. Widmark, toward the end of his career in film, helped finance it himself.

North Korea needs to be removed as a potential threat to this nation. When one thinks of the billions of dollars poured into this shithole of a nation to no avail it should make the solution clear.

They didn't identify this supposed person. Then they said maybe they wouldn't fire this supposed person.

Maybe there is no such person. Personally, I think the HI EMA may be totally incompetent and they're just pretending that "someone clicked something". It sounds pretty phony to me.

That was a very strange press conference they held.

I always remember the ending where Poitier, with panic rising in his voice, says, "You can stop those torpedoes, right? Right?"

And Widmark just stares.

We have begun to distrust ALL agencies of the central socialist government.

Perhaps so but they were not to blame.

This was a state-run emergency alert system. Parts of it are used for regular civil defense warnings, like for a possible tsunami. That is its main use.

Apparently they are upgrading it to warn of missile threats as well. You'll notice that the warnings were given by a robot voice but it is poorly scripted.

The warning broadcast on at least on TV station (the one with the soccer game) began: "A civil authority has issued A CIVIL DANGER WARNING for the following counties or areas...". Gee, ya think a real nuclear attack wouldn't be for the entire state? Notice they didn't even have it set up to say "The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency has issued...".

The message continued: "...Effective until 6:07PM...". Uh-huh. All that bad nuke stuff should clear off in a few hours.

It all reads like an incomplete retrofit of the tsunami warning system.

Keep in mind, America's civil defense warning system is a joke. You recall back in 2010/2011, they were talking about how 0bama could broadcast to every cellphone in the country during a national emergency? Well, not so much. They scheduled at the same time the very first drill involving the entire national defense early warning system. The networks and cable/satellite providers did reasonably well at switching to the approved frequencies and patching it all properly. But the national early warning system failed to take control of all of those systems. A total system fail. They did try to test 0bama sending a text nationally. It only annoyed some people with certain mobile carriers in Ohio and no one else even knew they had tried the system.

In short, civil defense warnings are a complete joke in America. They always were. The systems fail because the feds never intended to warn us of our impending doom at all.

They do have actual evacuation plans for Congress and top agencies and the Pentagon. They still fly the big heavy choppers a couple of times a week to land at the Pentagon and on the lawn outside the Capitol. There are no plans to collect members of Congress unless they are in Washington; they'd be on their own. So it is essentially an evacuation system that would only be used if America was launching a first-strike nuclear attack. Otherwise, nada.

If you want to know more, a terrific book about it came out a year or so back. Raven Rock, The US Government's Secret Plan to Save Itself by Garrett M. Graff. Yeah, they planned to fly away and leave us to die. The book exposes a lot of Cold War info and the entire continuity-of-government scheme.

No doubt, this is exactly what Wo-Fat considers his official policy. Rocket Man is really sad that Hitlery isn't in the WH to continue appeasing him. His dad beat Bill Xlinton before and he bested Secretary Xlinton multiple times.

The Norks (and their partner Iran) saw what happened to the Arab dictators as America amassed its military assets in the vicinity.

We just transferred 3 B-2 stealth bombers to the region, from their permanent home base in Missouri. Now we're following up with some B-1B's as well. We don't just move these bombers around willy-nilly. Their repositioning sends a clear message to our enemies.

We are definitely ratcheting up more pressure in the region and it is clearly directed at the Norks.
