Mass. 2nd-Grader Sent Home For Crucifix Drawing: Ordered to Undergo Psychological Evaluation

TAUNTON, Mass. – An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and came up with what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday.

Chester Johnson told WBZ-TV that his son made the drawing on Dec. 2 after his second-grade teacher asked children to sketch something that reminded them of the holiday.

Johnson said the teacher became upset when his son said he drew himself on the cross. Johnson, who is black, told WBZ he suspects racism is involved. He said he thinks the school overreacted and wants an apology.

Johnson told the Taunton Daily Gazette, which first reported the story on Tuesday, that his son gets specialized reading and speech instruction and has never been violent in school.

An educational consultant working with the Johnson family said the teacher was also alarmed when the boy drew Xs for Jesus' eyes.

A call to Johnson was not immediately returned.

The boy was cleared to return to school on Dec. 7 after the evaluation found nothing to indicate that he posed a threat to himself or others. But his father said the boy was traumatized by the incident and the school district has approved the family's request to have the child transferred to another school.

"They owe my family an apology and the kid an apology and they need to work with my son (to) the best of their ability to get him back to where he was before all this happened," Johnson told New England Cable News.

The father said in the days before the incident the family had gone to the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette in Attleboro, where there are crucifixion statues.

"That was fresh on his mind," he told NECN. "And that was a good thing that he saw."

Superintendent Julie Hackett said she could not discuss an individual student and did not address the drawing specifically or the teacher's reaction to it, but did say the school has safety protocols in place that were followed.

Hackett did not return multiple calls from The Associated Press on Tuesday.

In June 2008, a Taunton fifth-grade student was suspended for a day for a stick figure drawing that appeared to depict him shooting his teacher and a classmate.

Fisrt - I wanted to tell the teacher she was a fool - then I wanted to tell the father he was an idiot.

Teacher - You let the kid draw something and he drew a Christain symbol - no big deal.

Father - It's not about your kid being black - it's about the Christain symbol your kid drew.

The dad had a clear case until he threw in the racism comment. Sheesh!

wtf?

WTF? This "father" subjected his kid to some psycho-babble-technician on the "orders" of some school?

We're toast.

I know, the REBEL in me just came un-glued! When my daughter read this, she said I would have put the school on the map, and made the teacher 'infamous'!

And she's right...I would have!!

HA! The school tried to tell me I had to take my kid to the ER immediatly and have him admitted into the psyche ward. When I told them it wouldn't be necessary as they had simply misunderstood something he had written, they sent Sheriffs and Child Protective Services to my house. Evidently, he wrote a poem he wanted to get published in a school book or something, and the poem had to do with death and suicide. The teacher gave the poem to the nurse who then gave it to some shrink. They decided my son was suicidal and needed help right away. When I told them they were mistaken, they sent the authorities to the house to check on him and make sure he was still alive. They decided my son was fine, but the nurse called me again the next day to see how he was and if I had gotten him some help yet. I relayed a few words to her, politely of course, and that was the last call I got. lol

These things are going to happen. Parents have got to know how to deal with them. Parents have got to remember that they are in charge - not the school and not anyone else that's paid by the Government. If they get their checks from the government, they work for us.

My son is 16 and with six kids, we've dealt with this type stuff a lot of times. I've yanked all my kids out of school, put them in homeschooling, on- line schooling, charter schools, where ever I felt comfortable with them being. Public schools don't scare me and they don't scare my children. My children are familiar with their tactics and have learned that when questioned by cops or CPS, their best interest is not to engage in conversation with them. They have also learned not to talk too much to the school authorities.

Remember when you could trust your teachers or your principal or the school nurse? It's not like that anymore. Never ever ever council your children that if they have a problem they can talk to somebody at the school about it. They can't. The school people are not be trusted.

If I didn't have to work full-time, I would be home-schooling my children.

8-year-old gets psych evaluation for drawing Jesus

He did not draw a "crucifix" as the title states...

but drew a picture of Jesus Christ crucified...

Thats what the anti-Christ NWO objects to

Christianity in any form

I remember that when my son was in 1st grade, his teacher was concerned about a drawing he did of his family. He colored his tee shirt black. That meant low self-esteem! LOL I just laughed. That little boy runs a computer company out of Boston now..no signs of "low self-esteem" anywhere!

To comment on Dad tho, a simple demand for apology was enough. Why is it always about race with black people?

That is very sloppy journalism. It sounds like this child drew his interpretation of Christ on a cross.. the father is saying that the school is upset because the child drew Christ as a black man, (I think).

If it were me, I would welcome the opportunity to talk about how Christ is black, white- red.. brown - yellow..

Christ is in that child- and if the child has lots of pigmentation- then so does his reflection of Jesus.

I love this story. Good for that boy. He gives me hope. The teachers and the school are laughable- as much now as they ever have been.
