How To Title: A Wisconsin mother is facing 10 years in jail after making her nine-year-old son hold down a swimming pool on top of her minivan while she drove it
A woman who made her nine-year-old son hold down a swimming pool on the roof of her minivan as she drove to her sister’s house is facing jail. Amber Schmunk, 28, did not have enough room in the vehicle so she made the nine-year-old boy ride on top in order to hold down the pool, according to the criminal complaint made against her. She has been charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety and faces 10 years behind bars as well as a $25,000 fine. Officers were sent to the corner of Hillcrest Road and Claremont Road in Saukville, Wisconsin when they received a report of a child holding down a plastic pool. Amanda Schmunk made her son hold onto a pool on her van roof as she drove the vehicle to her sister's house Schmunk pulled over, took her son off the roof and folded away the pool then pulled into her sister’s drive before explaining to officers why she made the boy ride on the roof. The police complaint says Schmunk said ‘she believed it was OK as her father let her do things like that when she was that age’. She told officers the child was only on the roof for ‘maybe 20 to 30 seconds’. A neighbour, Barbara Sellin, told Fox6Now: ‘That woman needs to think the safety of her children. ‘As a grandparent right now, I mean, I know the kids have to be strapped in. ‘That's just common sense. You love your kids and take care of them. To put a kid on top of the car is beyond ridiculous.’ The incident occurred on September 9 and Schmunk is due in court for an initial appearance on November 14.

To: misterwhite (#0) (Edited) Mr Whitie This child should be punished by taking his mother away. Orphanage or foster homes will teach him a lesson. Don't you think so? Also dumb people should be prevented from having children. That way we can reduce population of this planet from billions to millions and nature will be freed from human interference. Does it sound to you like a smart proposal?
#2. To: cranky (#0) I'd like to know how far she drove, and how fast.
The police complaint says Schmunk said ‘she believed it was OK as her father let her do things like that when she was that age’. A reasonable stance. Since the child wasn't hurt, I'm inclined to say not guilty.
#3. To: cranky, homeschooling, family values (#0) (Edited) her father let her do things like that when she was that age’. The officer was wrong to interfere with the child's homeschooling in traditional family values. The LEO goon is acting as an enforcer for the NEA teachers union. If the kid had been holding a statue of Karl Marx, the cop would have done nothing.
#4. To: All, misterwhite (#1) (Edited) A Wisconsin mother [made] her nine-year-old son hold down a swimming pool on top of her minivan while she drove it. She then told her son to get up on the roof and hold onto the pool as she drove. That is not quite true. According to her own admission….Schmunk later stated she, "had no way to strap it down so she had her (son) climb on the roof to hold it down while she drove." Schmunk “later told police she did strap the boy down inside the pool.” Read that again very carefully! She had no way to strap the pool down, BUT she did strap the boy down inside the pool. She has been charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety and faces 10 years behind bars as well as a $25,000 fine. This child should be punished by taking his mother away. Orphanage or foster homes will teach him a lesson. Don't you think so?YGBSM !!! Police, however, did think it was a big deal. She's due in court on Nov. 14. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.Throw the book at the irresponsible idiot, Judge!
#5. To: cranky (#0) A similar incident with a tragic result … Woman charged when child riding on the roof of her car falls off MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A Memphis woman is charged with abuse after an accident that left a child critically injured. A witness said she saw a car driving back and forth at a high rate of speed in a parking lot Wednesday night on Mud Island with several children on the roof. The same witness said she saw the car drive up the ramp to leave the park, when an 8-year-old boy fell off and hit his head on the pavement. Another witness said it took the driver several minutes to stop the car and pick up the boy who was, "lifeless and limp." “You don't understand, I wish I didn't see it. That's how messed up it would have your right now,” said Kearron Wilson. “I was praying to God she would slow down when she got to that hill, but she didn’t. She pressed on the gas.” Police located Marnica Cooper at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital with five children, one of whom had a critical injury to his head. Police say Cooper ran from an officer at the hospital. In addition to the 8-year-old, a 12-year-old boy said he was also riding on the roof and a 9-year-old was riding on the trunk. Two 3-year-olds were in the car without child seats or seat belts. The girl riding on the trunk identified herself as Cooper's daughter and said she warned her mother the 8-year-old was, "sliding off the roof of the car., so he attempted to jump off the car but fell." “At least 6 times ‘ma, ma, ma stop!’ before she stopped the car,” recalled Wilson. Marnica Cooper is charged with aggravated child abuse, child abuse and neglect, driving without a license in possession, driving while license revoked, reckless driving and no proof of insurance.
#6. To: Gatlin (#4) BUT she did strap the boy down inside the pool. The news reports you cite don't state that the woman made that statement. And it doesn't make sense. How could she possibly strap the boy down without strapping the pool with it, or without punching holes in the pool? And no word on the distance or likely speed traveled. As for the supposed similar incident where a child was severely injured: fine, file charges.
#7. To: Pinguinite (#2) Since the child wasn't hurt, I'm inclined to say not guilty Of course, the child should not be punished and made an orphan to be manhandled by the tender government care like Oliver Twist was.
#8. To: Pinguinite (#6) And no word on the distance or likely speed traveled. There is a word, it was between 30 and 20 seconds, probably in the driveway or around the house. Boy wanted this pool very much. I would say it was couple miles an hour at most.
#9. To: Pinguinite (#2) Since the child wasn't hurt, I'm inclined to say not guilty. I grew up in Tn in the fifties and the things I saw being hauled in old, beat up farm pickup trucks could fill a Ripley's Believe It or Not. A farmer's kid could get a license to drive the farm truck at twelve and boy, oh boy, did that open up the world for us. that's my story and i'm sticking to it #10. To: Gatlin (#5) (Edited) The lady made a mistake. She already learned a lesson. Drop the chargeds imo.
#11. To: A K A Stone (#10) as well as a $25,000 fine Government needs the money. I do not go to church every time the doors are opened, but I love Jesus Christ. I am only human and fail Him daily. I believe Jesus is the Son of God, was born of a virgin, was crucified on a cross, died for my sins and rose from the dead and that He loves us dearly, and is faithful to forgive us of our sins. But He says that if you deny me in front of your friends I will deny you in front of my Father. Can I get an Amen! #12. To: Gatlin (#5) one of whom had a critical injury to his head. What are the odds this irresponsible mother had health insurance? I'd say zero. Meaning the rest of us had to pick up the tab to save her child. Yet posters on this forum say we have no right to regulate her reckless behavior. Hmmm. Maybe they can pay the hospital bill.
#13. To: A Pole (#1) This child should be He can stay with her sister while she does the time. And she can sell the killer van to come up with the fine.
