The Establishments war on Donald Trump Title: Breaking: GOP Sponsor of Fusion GPS’s Opposition Research Identifies Themselves [WFB] Well, smack my ass and call me Sally. Never in a million years would I have guessed this. Now that it has been revealed that the Trump dossier was a joint project of the Clinton campaign and the DNC…with the FBI chipping in a bit of your money after the election…the next big mystery has been who was the original client that hired Fusion GPS to find oppo on Donald Trump. Now we know: The Free Beacon funded the project from the fall of 2015 through the spring of 2016, whereupon it withdrew funding and the project was picked up by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. The original arrangement between the Free Beacon and Fusion GPS involved opposition research into multiple Republican candidates, not just front-runner Donald Trump. Sources close to the Free Beacon stress that the project, when the Free Beacon funded it, had nothing to do with Russia and did not involve Christopher Steele, the former British spy who gathered anti-Trump dirt in Russia. Steele was retained by Fusion GPS when the project was funded by Democrats, and not in its initial phase, when the Free Beacon was involved. The reason why the came clean is obvious. Devin Nunes has issued a subpoena for Fusion GPS’s bank records for the express purpose of finding who funded the oppo efforts. That subpoena is in court, but unless the Obama-appointed judte finds more emanations and penumbras of the Fourth Amendment, they are going to have to give them up. At the same time, Nunes issued a subpoena to the FBI for their documents and yesterday, after a month-and-a-half delay, the FBI agreed to comply. Coming forward was the only real course of action available to them. What we know, right now, fits into the narrative that has been pieced together. Christopher Steele wasn’t brought into the project until about three months after Free Beacon had ceased funding the project. Representatives of the Free Beacon approached the House Intelligence Committee today and offered to answer what questions we can in their ongoing probe of Fusion GPS and the Steele dossier. But to be clear: We stand by our reporting, and we do not apologize for our methods. We consider it our duty to report verifiable information, not falsehoods or slander, and we believe that commitment has been well demonstrated by the quality of the journalism that we produce. The First Amendment guarantees our right to engage in news-gathering as we see fit, and we intend to continue doing just that as we have since the day we launched this project. So a conservative publication paid for opposition research into multiple Republican candidates. And Trump. Gosh, with friends like these ...
#2. To: misterwhite (#1) (Edited) Well, Washington Examiner was willing to dish out some info on their direct competitor at Washington Free Beacon. That was nice of them, eh? What a passion they have for journalism that exposes their primary competitor in the Beltway! AoS:
The Free Beacon insists its effort had nothing to do with Christopher Steele, who only came on board when Hillary and the DNC started paying Fusion.
York reports that Free Beacon claims that the oppo research wasn't just about Trump, but about "multiple" candidates:
Let me guess: Anyone who wasn't favored by the Corporate Class? Like Ted Cruz, too, maybe?
Don't forget: Operatives attempted a hit on Ted Cruz, too, alleging infidelity. I know most people think that was Donald Trump and his pet editor at the National Enquirer, but #SalonHot25 Twitter Nobody "The" Rick Wilson was trying to stoke media interest in what he coyly called "#TheThing" about Ted Cruz for months.
Connected? No idea. Just a data point.
Here's The Free Beacon's modified limited hang-out in which they don't quite come clean and explain which candidates they had FusionGPS snoop into, or why they chose those instead of, say, well, the ones I strongly suspect they didn't pay for oppo on.
Maybe it's time to rethink the idea that Corporate Class should rule the party from the shadows instead of those unwashed populist savages, huh? Dot, dot, dot. LOL. I'm not sure if Kristol still has any actual connections to WFB.
#3. To: Tooconservative (#2) I'm not sure if Kristol still has any actual connections to WFB. Smells like him.
#4. To: misterwhite (#3) (Edited) Well, you know that's exactly what everyone will say. You can almost count the minutes until he issues a denial. Or maybe he'll claim full credit to continue his reign as the King of the NeverTrumpers. And Matthew Continetti is mentioned. He is still WFB's editor-in-chief. A former Weekly Standard employee. And, since 2012 when he converted to Judaism and got married, he is Bill Kristol's son-in-law. So there is a whiff of NeverTrumper connection there, eh?
#5. To: misterwhite (#3) BTW, you probably realize that this knocks a prop out from FusionGPS claiming confidentiality to protect their initial GOP client (WFB). The House investigators are pressing hard to open all their files and find out all their clients. FusionGPS is a go-to for libmedia because it is run by former journalists who set up their own political attack shop and investigative service. They are totally connected with all the libmedia outlets. They aren't just another political shop IOW. And now they're trying to hide behind confidentiality and also still try to pretend they're protected by First Amendment guarantees of a free press who have a right to protect their sources. It's vital that Trey Gowdy push this through and force them to talk. Or for Sessions to appoint a special prosecutor, just as Grassley is demanding.
