Collins: 'I just felt that I couldn't walk away' from Senate

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Sunday she decided against running for governor of Maine next year because she felt there was still an important role for her to play in the Senate.

"I looked at all that is going on in Washington today. The issues that we're dealing with are so consequential. I do play a key role as being one of those senators who can work across the aisle and actually get things done," Collins told host Kasie Hunt on MSNBC's "Kasie DC," which premiered on Sunday.

"And I just felt that I couldn't walk away even though it's a very difficult and troubled time in Washington," the Republican lawmaker continued.

Collins said she entertained the idea of a gubernatorial run "for many reasons," pointing to her friends and family.

"One is that I missed being in Maine full time. Most of my family and many of my friends are there. And governor is a more hands-on job where you can do more to promote economic opportunities, and that really matters to me," she said.

Collins ended months of public speculation on Friday, when she announced that she planned to stay in her Senate role for the rest of the term.

"I want to continue to play a key role in advancing policies that ... bring peace and stabilities to a troubled and violent world," Collins said last week during a speech at a local Chamber of Commerce event in Maine. "And I have concluded that the best way I can contribute to these priorities is to remain a member of the U.S. Senate."
"I am a congenital optimist and continue to believe that Congress can — and will — be more productive. ... I have demonstrated the ability to work across the aisle," she added.
Collins, a centrist in her party, has become a key figure this year in some of Washington's largest legislative battles.
Her vote against some of the health-care measures put forth by her party, which has a slim 52-seat majority in the upper chamber, helped kill the two separate Republican efforts to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

The vast majority of the D&R party Senators fit that description. It's what the people who elected them want... anti-American scum.

I'm blaming the partisan ahole voters who elected them! What kind of jerk would vote for what's in congress? There approval ratings are horrible, yet they keep getting re-elected.

Vivid imagination is no substitute for facts. She was headed to a loss in a closed Republican primary.

Poll: Sen. Susan Collins Increasingly Unpopular for Vote Against Obamacare Repeal

by Sean Moran
Breitbart
11 Aug 2017

A new survey indicates that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has become increasingly unpopular as a result of her vote against Obamacare repeal in the Senate.

Sen. Collins, along with Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and John McCain (R-AZ), voted against Obamacare repeal in the Senate, effectively halting the repeal effort in the upper chamber. Conservatives have frequently chastised Sen. Susan Collins’ opposition to repealing Obamacare. She opposed Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare in 2015, and she voted against repealing Obamacare this summer. Jason Pye, vice president of legislative affairs for FreedomWorks, asked, “Is Susan Collins actually a Republican? She conferences with the Republicans, there’s an R next to her name, but a question mark is more appropriate.”

Many pundits speculate that Sen. Collins might run for Maine governor after current Governor Paul LePage finishes up his final term in 2018. Collins ran for governor and lost against now-Sen. Angus King (I-ME) in 1994.

The new poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) revealed some unfavorable polling for the Maine moderate Republican. Sixty-two percent of Maine citizens disapproved of Sen. Collins’ job performance, and 62 percent of those polled also said that they would rather vote for someone else in the Republican primary for Maine governor. Forty-four percent of Maine Republicans polled suggested that they would rather support Mary Mayhew, the former Health and Human Services commissioner for Maine.

Sixty-one percent of Maine citizens suggested that Sen. Collins voting against Obamacare repeal made them less likely to vote for Collins for governor. Only 24 percent said that it would make it more likely to vote for Collins.

Seventy-seven percent of Maine Republicans approved of President Donald Trump’s job performance, while only 19 percent of Republicans disapprove of the president.

New poll shows Maine Sen. Susan Collins losing in a hypothetical GOP primary for governor in 2018

By Stephen Wolf
Tuesday Aug 08, 2017 · 1:28 PM CST

Longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins has been the metaphorical elephant in the room in Maine’s gubernatorial race for much of this cycle, since Collins has previously said she won’t make a decision on whether to run until the fall, even though her candidacy is widely seen as a significant possibility. Former state Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew isn’t waiting on Collins, though, since she kicked off her campaign two months ago. Politico relays that a new PPP poll somewhat surprisingly finds Mayhew with a 44-33 lead over Collins in a hypothetical Republican primary.

Collins has routinely been one of the country’s most popular incumbents, and she won significant crossover support from Democrats in her last few re-election battles. However, her steadfast opposition to the GOP’s health care bill has likely angered the Republican primary base, creating an opening for an insurgent challenger to attack her for insufficient conservatism in the closed primary.

Ya figure the only reason Trump is there, is because of Ruskie hacking? Trump believes that too, so he signed on to sanctions against Russia.

Yup. More deflection. Collins must have been told to play the "Trump" card because a focus group representing her constituency would buy the deflection/projection.

The Media, Dems, the GOPe and Elites will scapegoat "Hitler!!!" er...I mean Trump and his 63 million "KKK/Alt-Right" voters till the day he leaves.

Trump wants a cookie, so he's adopted Hillary/McCain/Obama/Rubio/Kerry's "regime change" foreign policy?

This changes leadership from secular governments, to Islamic wackjob governance. The Bush/Obama record is clear on that, not to mention Jimiah Carter and his Iranian Students deposing the Shah.

Trump did not boot King Barack I out of the White House. January 20th did that. Donaldus Magnus saved human civilization from Queen Hillary I and the Clinton crime family.

No, he's there because in addition to being corrupt and incompetent, Hillary induced projectile vomiting.
