Title: What’s bigger than the Trump-Putin meet? This is [LNG sales to Europe]

Media will focus overwhelming attention today on the G-20 economic summit in Germany for the initial encounter between President Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. We previously explored here what’s at stake in that encounter.

But from a lasting economic standpoint, folks, what happened Thursday in Poland and tomorrow in Britain could be much more important.

In Warsaw, as Ed Morrissey points out, Trump offered leaders from Poland and numerous other European countries long-term LNG deals to diversify their supplies and avoid creating undesirable political leverage with a certain large country to the East that has not hesitated to cut off natural gas supplies for political reasons.

Trump didn’t mention that nation. He didn’t have to. It contains six letters beginning with R and ending with a.

“America stands ready,” Trump declared at a news conference, “to help Poland and other European nations diversify their energy supplies, so that you can never be held hostage to a single supplier.”

In previous years, Russia has turned off natural gas exports to certain countries whose policies displeased Putin. This approach of Trump’s is another part of his tougher talk on trade, which seems to be working, as we wrote here.

Liquefied natural gas exports are a key part of this president’s energy program and trade policy, which he intends to use to help balance trade deficits and exert favorable leverage on trading partners, China, for instance, where the U.S. buys $300 billion more per year than it sells.

The United States has had an insatiable appetite for energy imports over the years. But thanks to the technical developments of fracking that tap into previously unreachable sources, the U.S. now has an immense abundance of natural gas.

It can be moved, of course, through pipelines domestically or, in special conversion facilities deeply chilled, exported in liquid form and then returned to a gaseous state by foreign customers.

By an amazing coincidence, the first massive load of U.S. LNG is due to dock in Britain Saturday. Another landed in Poland last month. Lithuania expects one soon, all among some two dozen new nation customers around the globe.

It’s all from the first LNG conversion facility in Sabine Pass, Louisiana, an $11 billion plant. Five more such plants are under construction and four others fully permitted. Each facility produces both construction and permanent jobs and, according to one analysis, some $20 billion per year in value-added economic activity. If memory serves, more new jobs fit with Trump’s economic plans too.

Additionally, natural gas burns cleaner than coal. So, the effects of fuel-switching both domestically and abroad are substantial on greenhouse gas emissions and conventional air pollutants, even without a Paris accord.

LNG export deals are privately negotiated. But Trump is so eager to push them, he jokingly offered Thursday to work out a deal on the spot with Polish President Andrzej Duda. “I think we can enter a contract for LNG within the next 15 minutes,” Trump said. “Do you have anybody available to negotiate?”

Duda laughed, but saw contracts soon between the Polish government and U.S. companies. “I believe that after the conclusion of those negotiations, there will be a long-term contract for U.S. LNG deliveries to our LNG terminal,” he said.

Poster Comment:

I know I have more interest in this topic than the rest of LF's posters combined. But the importance of energy production and policy is absolutely paramount to America's future and its role around the world to bring the snarling Russian Bear to heel and finally give OPEC their comeuppance, something American presidents have promised us since the Seventies but never delivered on. American industry finally delivered on those false promises made by our presidents.

Trump is dead-on to focus on energy policy and exports. It's his smartest move (along with deregulation). Fortunately, he knows it.

It was charming that he was offering on-stage to negotiate new LNG deals with Poland. He's so eager. And Poland's prez let him down easy.LOL

Wiki: LNG carrier

There is a constant looming inevitability of an accident that may occur. There is no perfect way to ensure that there will never be an accident, and there have been major petrochemical spills in the past that have instilled a sense of fear about petrochemical spills. The Exxon Valdez crashed off the coast of Alaska, spilling about 10.8 million US gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in 1989. In 2010, 210 million gallons of oil spilled from BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig.

LNG has not gained the notoriety that oil has. The LNG sector is known to have a good safety record regarding cargo loss. There have been close to 80,000 loaded port transits of LNG carriers with no loss of containment failure. [11](Pitblado, 2004) In the 1970’s two ships ran aground, but due to the strength and integrity of the LNG tanks there was no spilling.

Paik (2001)[12]gives an interesting analysis that shows that spherical carriers can withstand a 90 degree side-on collision with another similar LNG carrier at 6.6kts (50% of normal port speed) with no loss of LNG cargo integrity. This drops to only 1.7kts for a fully loaded 300,000 dwt oil tanker collision into an LNG carrier. Although collisions are possible in open water, large oil tankers only enter a few US ports and the chance of a collision is not generally credible. However, the possibility of collision would need to be considered in an analysis of those ports when considering port geometry.[11] (Pitblado, 2004)

HAZID performed a risk assessment calculation of the likelihood of a LNG spill. Taking into account precautions, training, regulations and technology changes over time HAZID calculates that the likelihood of an LNG spill is much less than 1 and 100,000 visits. Hazard Identification team members included marine classification engineers, naval architects, structural specialists, marine officers, risk analysts, and process, mechanical and safety engineers.[11] (Pitblado, 2004)

For all your fearmongering in your little video, you can't erase the accident-free record of LNG tankers going back to the late Fifties, even including two incidents where LNG ships ran aground but their containment systems worked perfectly.

And the origin site for your trolling, http://www.productmakersden.com, is a joke IMO. Do you really expect us to take anything they say seriously?

ProductMakersDen would have to improve considerably to even be considered a disreputable content farm.

It's been a long time without an accident, it's overdue.

Probably happen about when Trump steps off AF1 in London. The Donald likes to put on a big show of force for foreign leaders by blowing stuff up. He blew up the legitimate government of Syria, in an attempt to make the president of China choke on his Trump Steak.

I blew up Syria because Assad wouldn't bow down to me, so watch out!

It's been a long time without an accident, it's overdue.

Statistics don't work that way.

It would be more accurate to say that LNG ship transport has proven even safer in practice than in theory.

Sorry to interrupt your Trump-bashing but Trump did very little to Syria. His only strike at that airfield happened after he gave the Russkies (and the Syrians) an hour of warning which they used to evacuate the hangars and the airfield. And it left the runways intact with only a few wrecked hangars that, of course, didn't have any operational aircraft in them anyway.

0bama, along with the Saudis/Qataris/Turks and Brit/French intel agencies, are responsible for the destruction of Syria along with ISIS (a coalition of Chechen commanders and various Sunni elements of Saddam Hussein's intel agencies and military).

Trump has done very little to Syria other than to try to strike at ISIS and the phony strike at that airfield.

Trump is right between the Syrian/Russian armies and the FSA/ISIS terrorists, protecting them in his "Safe Zone".

The Obama/Hillary/Kerry jihadi revolution to overthrow the Syrian government is progressing rapidly to quagmire status (or WW III), under the leadership of the progressive neocon in chief Donald J. Trump.

The Obama/Hillary/Kerry jihadi revolution to overthrow the Syrian government is progressing rapidly to quagmire status (or WW III), under the leadership of the progressive neocon in chief Donald J. Trump.

More accurately, Trump is having to deal with the aftermath of two major foreign policy disasters by 0bama/Hitlery/Lurch as a result of the Arab Spring. This is not even accounting for the stupendously bad deals they made with Iran and Cuba and so on.

Libya was a takedown by EU's NATO powers. They went in to knock out Ghaddafi, failed, then whined until we came in to finish him off. Completely destabilized Libya as a result and resulted in the dash of north African migrants into Europe. Libya is a lawless country, full of al-Qaeda/ISIS/Salafists/Wahhabists, destined to suffer years or decades of civil war.

Similarly, the conspiracy of the Saudis/Qataris/Turks in collusion with British/French intel who wanted natural gas pipelines to run from Qatar through Syria and into Europe resulted in the massive destruction and death in Syria.

0bama/Hitlery/Trump and the western EU NATO powers were the instigators of these disastrous policies.

Donald Trump was nowhere near power at the time.

Maybe you should put down your anti-Trump crack pipe and review the relevant history of these disastrous Arab Spring polices by both Dems and the neocon element of the GOP. Pretty much the entire D.C. elite. You can trash Trump on a lot of things but I don't recall him ever speaking in favor of these awful Arab Spring policies. He was one of the few who didn't favor it.
