At least, that must be what Newport, Oregon police thought went through the mind of the concerned citizen who snapped the above photo when they took to Facebook apparently worried that a cat sniper with a rifle was stalking the streets of Newport earlier this week.

Notice the department’s post says “reports” — as in, more than one report.

Yes. Cats with rifles.

No opposable thumbs, but… rifles.

Apparently the cat was given a verbal warning.

(The sad part is, if this was a real 9-1-1 call, no one at TDS would even be surprised.)

That cat was one lucky feline - some chicken-shit cop might have "feared for his life" and shot the poor kitty.

Remember folks - be a good citizen and report any armed cats in your neighborhood.

Yeah - I'm a "cat person" too. I wouldn't give my cat a rifle though, he's tried to kill me a few times by running between my legs as I was going down the stairs.

This photo of the cat has been circulating the Internet and Facebook since last July.

On Tuesday, the Newport Police Facebook page, which is possibly the best local police Facebook page in America, posted a picture of a cat in a tree.

But this was no regular cat-in-a-tree. The cat looked distressingly like it was holding an assault rifle.

Ultimately though, Newporters can breathe a sigh of relief, because according to the Newport Police, "Reports of an armed cat this morning were unfounded."

"The feline was contacted by our canine," the post continues, "and was determined to be in possession of a non-lethal branch."

"The cat was given a verbal warning," Newport Police said on Facebook, "for posing with what could be mistaken as an assault rifle while wearing poor camouflage attire."

Over email, Kit O'Carra who runs the Newport Police Facebook page told us she found the picture online. We found an early iteration of the meme on Reddit from nine months ago.

"The photo has been circulating the Internet and Facebook since last July," she said, "perhaps even earlier."

"I wrote the post putting our spin on it and having a little fun with it," O'Carra added.
