A 56-year-old woman prayed to God while a "crazed" man tried to break in to her home, telling a 9-1-1 dispatcher, "I don't want to have to kill this man, but I'll kill him graveyard dead" – and within minutes, she blasted the relentless intruder in the chest with her shotgun.

Cushing, Okla., resident Donna Jackson shot and killed Billy Dean Riley, 53, who has a long history of alcohol and drug convictions, after the belligerent man hurled a patio chair through her glass door Dec. 4.

Jackson remained calm as she spoke with a 9-1-1 dispatcher during the break-in. She called at 12:40 a.m. and was on the phone for more than 10 minutes reporting the intruder, explaining that her barking dogs had awakened her in the middle of the night. She said she was alone, and her husband was working a night shift.

An urgent 9-1-1 call

"There's a man at my back door," she told the dispatcher. "He's trying to get in."

She said Riley was hollering and appeared drunk.

"I have a shotgun, and I will use it," she warned.

"He is banging on the door," Jackson told the dispatcher. "It's a patio door, and it's not worth a nickel. I can hear him banging. He's going to get in."

Loud noises can be heard on the 9-1-1 audio.

"He's crazy. He's crazy," Jackson said. "I'm taking the safety off the gun, ma'am. He's acting crazy. I don't know how he got in here. He had to have come from the very back. Oh cr-p, he's coming around the front.

The dispatcher asked, "Is your front door locked?"

"Yes, ma'am," she replied, "but it's only got a lock on the handle."

Then the dispatcher asked, "Do you have a place where you can go inside your house and lock yourself in a room?"

"Uh, not really," Jackson said calmly. "I've got a big shotgun. I'm not going into a tiny bathroom."

She told the dispatcher the intruder was walking around her house, trying relentlessly to get in.

"Oh cr-p, he's at the back," she said.

The dispatcher said the sheriff's department advised that Jackson should defend her property if need be.

"Alright, he's at the garage," she said. "Nope, he's at the back patio door again."

Loud crashing noises can be heard on the audio tape.

"I don't want to have to kill this man, but I'll kill him graveyard dead, ma'am," she told the dispatcher.

The dispatcher replied, "I understand."

"Alright," Jackson replied as she prepared to defend herself.

Jackson stood in the kitchen with her lights turned off, remaining calm and updating the dispatcher. The man continued banging as dogs barked.

"Oh cr-p, he's breaking in," Jackson said. "He's breaking in now.

"I have the gun on him. He's breaking the window. I'm going to kill him."

She continued, "He's walking across, back and forth on the porch. He looks to be an older man. I don't want to kill him. … He's kicking the door. Please hurry. Please hurry. He's going to make it in. Please hurry, ma'am. He's kicking the door. Please hurry. I think he's drunk. He doesn't know where his pickup's at."

Jackson prayed, "God, I don't want to kill this man. Oh dear God."

'I'm so sorry, Father'

She told the dispatcher, the sheriff deputies "need to hurry. He's going to break this thing open. If he does, I'll have to kill him, ma'am. I don't want to kill him."

The dispatcher responded, "I understand, ma'am. You have to protect yourself."

"I'm trying to stay away from the window," Jackson said. "It's off safety, ma'am. All I've got to do is fire."

Riley picked up a plastic patio chair in the backyard and hurled it through the sliding door, shattering the glass. Several loud crashing sounds can be heard on the audio as he forces his way into Jackson's home.

Jackson said calmly, "He's gotten in the house. I'm going to shoot."

"Oh God," the dispatcher replied.

After another loud crash, Jackson's shotgun blasts.

The shot killed the intruder instantly.

"Oh my God," the dispatcher said, realizing the gun had been fired.

"I shot. I'm going out front. I hit him," Jackson said, her voice trembling. "God help me. … Oh please, dear God, I think I've killed him. Please Father in heaven. Please Father in heaven. Oh my God, ma'am. … I'm so sorry."

The dispatcher responded, "It's OK. There's nothing you can do. You have to protect yourself. You don't know."

Jackson began sobbing and praying to God as the dispatcher tried to calm her.

"He's on the back porch," she said. "I'm so sorry, Father."

'Jackson was defending herself'

Lincoln County Sheriff Chuck Mangion told the Oklahoman newspaper the intruder had been arrested many times.

"I'd say he's been in and out of jail since he was old enough to go to jail," Mangion said. "He has a long history of drug and alcohol-related offenses."

According to Jackson, the man was talking "crazy," couldn't locate his pickup truck and had been screaming for a person named "Pat."

Mangion told the newspaper deputies discovered his truck in a ditch off the rural road.

Inside, they found Riley's sister, Patricia Ellen Totty, 45. She was taken to a hospital after investigators found her unconscious from an overdose of alcohol and narcotics.

Mangion said it was not clear whether Riley was trying to get help for his sister.

"He didn't go to the front door or ring the door bell to try to gain entry," he said

According to the report, court records show Riley had a number of intoxicated driving convictions from 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2004. He was also convicted of public intoxication in 2002 and possession of marijuana in 1998.

Officials believe Riley was on drugs during the break-in.

The shooting is under investigation, but Mangion told KSBI-TV in Oklahoma City the 56-year-old woman did what she had to do.

"This was nothing more than a home invasion," he said, "and Mrs. Jackson was defending herself."

Black gangs roaming downtown Denver often vented their hatred for white victims before assaulting and robbing them during a four-month crime wave, according to interviews and court records obtained by 7NEWS.

"I hate you f---ing white people," said a black woman in a large group of black men, according to the victim who was beaten up as he and three buddies left a LoDo bar after midnight on Aug. 30.

"F---- you, white boys," the woman added, according to the 25-year-old Westminster victim, who spoke to 7NEWS Friday.

"Why do you hate white people?" the man recalled asking. "That's when I got hit. They beat the crap out of me," he added, saying that 15 to 20 men beat him to the ground.

"They just swarmed you," said the man who curled up on the ground to shield his face. "You basically just had to protect yourself and hope they didn't kill you."

The victim, who suffered bruised ribs and a cut head, said he was protected by a padded motorcycle jacket. He asked that his name be withheld for his safety.

A couple dozen arrest warrant affidavits unsealed Friday offer chilling insights into the 26 racially-motivated "blitz attacks," which stretched from July 17 to Nov. 17.

One unidentified suspect told police "that the members of his gang earn status in the gang by beating up 'white dudes,'" according to court records. He added that the gangs targeted "drunk white guys," exiting bars and nightclubs in the entertainment district.

The suspects allegedly bragged about knocking out white victims with one punch to the head. Victims lying on the ground were "stomped" and even tossed through glass windows.

In the more than two dozen attacks, victims' injuries included a skull fracture as well as broken noses and eye sockets when they were blindsided by punches that often knocked them unconscious. One man was so savagely attacked that he was hospitalized in a coma for a while, police said.

Several of the 35 young male and female suspects arrested by police recently said the gangs often targeted lone white and Hispanic men because they didn't "fight back" and they had money, iPods and other valuable gadgets that attackers coveted.

Another goal: to drive whites away from their downtown turf, including a hip- hop nightclub, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

7NEWS exposed the crime spree in early September when a law enforcement source said the police department was keeping the public in the dark about a series of downtown attacks. The source added that a special FBI task force had been called in to help identify the assailants.

When 7NEWS made a public records request Sept. 3 for crime reports in the area, a police spokesman confirmed the department was investigating a "pattern of assaults and robberies in central Denver" that began in July.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson denied that police delayed warning the public for seven weeks to avoid frightening visitors to the popular and lucrative downtown entertainment district.

But police reports say the gang attack pattern was identified during the summer as the department deployed uncover teams and used surveillance cameras to identify the assailants.

"During the summer months of 2009, a pattern of criminal conduct was identified which included multiple suspects identifying a solo Caucasian or Hispanic male and completing a blitz attack against this party," an officer wrote in an arrest affidavit for a Sept. 4 robbery on the 16th Street Mall.

"Part of the MO involved the group of suspects, usually African American males, sending a party, possibly an African American female, to identify the victim," the officer wrote. "This is done by (the woman) talking with or standing with the victim. A suspect, generally male, from the group will step forward and hit the victim hard, knocking him down. Other members of the group will then emerge and begin participating in beating the victim."

The Westminster beating victim said if police had warned the public earlier, he and others could have better protected themselves

"I'm kind of upset that (police) didn't make it public," said the Westminster beating victim. "I would have been more vigilant. It would have made people a lot more on guard."

But, he added that, "I'm very pleased that they responded the way they did." Within minutes of his 911 cell phone call, uncover officers flooded the scene. He recalled listening to police radios crackling with reports of two suspects being arrested that night.

As police pursued the massive investigation involving 35 suspects and dozens of victims, investigators asked the young blacks why they targeted whites.

"Because they got a lot of money," suspect Allen Ford, 18, allegedly told police. Other suspects echoed that simple rationale.

I have to say that I do find it humorous that you're making fun of my id here, fartsky.

MOSTLY because they are alone,and this makes it safe for 10-15 blacks to attack one white man that they can attack from behind with no warning.

They are also VERY careful to stick to downtown Denver with these attacks because the DPD only issues concealed handgun permits to the elites of Denver Society,and these people don't go to the clubs on Colfax.

I'm glad Mrs. Jackson finally removed this guy from human society. But I'm pissed that he was still wandering around in human society after 4+ DUI convictions (it's not clear he had only one in each of those years). DUI should be treated as attempted murder. Imagine how much money the taxpayers were forced to spend on this career criminal over his lifetime. Somehow I doubt he was able to pay for lawyers out of his own pocket, and then there are the costs of police time, jail operations, court staff's time, and almost certainly "rehab" programs. And since it's seems very unlikely that he was able to hold down a job, he was probably getting all sorts of taxpayer-funded support for food, housing, medical care, etc. It's obscene.
