An unknown motorist is being hailed as a hero after he shot and killed a suspect who had ambushed an Arizona state trooper on Interstate 10, west of Phoenix. The trooper had been investigating a car crash when he was shot and rushed by the attacker.
The trooper, identified only as a 27-year veteran of the force, was responding to a call about someone shooting at cars on I-10 at around 4:30am local time, Department of Public Safety Director Colonel Frank Milstead told local media. At milepost 89, the trooper found a car that had rolled over and sought to help the female passenger who had been injured. While in the process of setting up flares, he was shot in the right shoulder. The shooter then charged the trooper, overpowered him and started slamming his head into the pavement. It was at this point that an “uninvolved third party” pulled over and asked if the officer needed assistance. “Please help me!” the trooper said, according to Milstead. The man returned to his vehicle, retrieved a personal weapon, ordered the suspect to stop, then shot him. "I don’t know if my trooper would not be alive without his assistance," Milstead told KPHO.
The suspect died of his wounds. The woman who was injured in the car crash died from her injuries. The trooper is recovering at an area hospital. The Arizona Department of Public Safety has not released any of the names of the people involved, including the armed citizen. In the official statement, the AZDPS makes no mention of the civilian, saying only that “a physical fight ensued and as a result the suspect was shot and killed.” A stretch of I-10 near Tonopah, Arizona was closed off as part of the investigation, with traffic headed to California rerouted for several hours on Thursday morning.

Story reminds me of a situation that a friend of mine, a State Trooper, experienced, back in the late 60's, on the Interstate about 04:00.

The single biggest reason I carry, isn't for my personal protection. It's for incidents like this. I will jump at the chance to go to slide lock on ANY criminal shitbag that gives me legal authorization to end their life....like if I should drive by this incident right here. And if I ever get the chance to help an officer, and after I put two 230 grain hollow points in the chest and one in the head of that criminal shitbag, I find out the criminal shitbag I just cleansed our gene pool of was a LE hating F' stain?..., well that's just icining on the cake.

My friend told me the following story.
It was about 04:00, and he was on his way home, south bound. He gets behind a car, obvious drunk, weaving, etc. He hits them with the blue light. Gets the two of them out of the car, then they decide they are going to fight, and they are all over the place, they wrestle into the right hand lane, cars wizzing by, the punks trying to get his gun, his glasses broke, all of a sudden tires squeeling, and they are lit up like a football field, the guy on top just goes up in the air like God reached down and picked up the punk on top, and Bob heard a loud noise. Bob said the truck driver guy that grabbed him was huge black guy, biggest man he had ever seen, and had a log chain, and he beat the shit out of both guys. He pulled Bob out of the road, and leaned him against the cruiser. He got Bobs handcuffs, and clipped the punks together, and used a piece of rope to tie them to the front bumper of the cruiser. He asked Bob if he was OK, and applied a bandage to his forehead that was bleeding. Bob said he was pretty addled. The truck driver got on Bob's radio, and told Post where he was, that he was hurt, and the punks were not going anywhere.
Told Bob " you will be OK, you will have help soon. Got back in his truck, and took off.
No troopers were still 10-8, so the post called the city PD, he was only about 1 mile north.
They said when they got there, the truck driver had placed out some flares to divert traffic along with the blue light, and Bob was leaned up against the back of the cruiser, still pretty addled
Bob always regretted not knowing who the truck driver was, since the man had saved his life. After that, Bob would never give a ticket to a truck driver.
Bob went to the jail the next day to see the punks, he said they looked real ruff. Said the log chain had really done a number on them. " Tuff shit " they deserved it!
Bob could tell the story so well! He was a true no bull shit guy. A fine Trooper, and a hell of a good guy !
