Trump will trash the TPP, it's the easy step because that treaty hasn't been ratified. it is strange that the biggest economy that fought hard for all its protections would walk back from something it has been pushing. Who do you think initiated the idea? I think we should walk away from the AUSFTA, maybe if we hadn't signed that one we would still have a car industry
Trump will not change existing treaties . He can thankfully only propose and sign laws and treaties Congress passes as law. The US is already an open market . Our average tariff is 1.4 % . So any trade deal we are involved in are mostly about opening markets in other countries ,and introducing our goods and services . Why do we have trade deficits ? Because we are the most prosperous nation ,have the largest disposable income ,and we have consumers who desire the imports . Foreign goods could not possibly be sold in the US unless we wanted to purchase them.
Foreign goods could not possibly be sold in the US unless we wanted to purchase them.
You have a poor who need cheap foriegn goods, but trade is a two way street, do you think I want nothing but american goods in our stores? no, I don't even want american out of season fruit. We remember the furore when we wanted to supply you with LNG, don't worry, we sell it to China, and you sell us substandard stuff like the F35. We don't want the TPP for access to your market, we already have that, we want the TPP for the same reason you do, access to other markets. I've said it before Tom, retreat, you will actually do us a favour. You see China as a threat but they will only be an enemy if you make them one
You would be suprised. Many people with disposable incomes still shop bargain. As for me ,it's simple math .If I have to spend more ,I purchase less . Our low tariffs mean that the producers of the world compete to get their products into our markets. Poor countries import very little of the world's product .They are the ones with large trade surpluses selling their resources to the world while their own citizens don't benefit from the resources . Rich countries import goods in abundance.TPP will also benefit us because the nations in the deal already have big import restrictions on American goods. TPP will only help open up those markets. And if you don't like our out of season fruit ;don't buy it .Buy domestic fruit from your 'abundant farmlands' . You don't like the F35 ? Neither do I .
you know Tom I don't, not yours or Vietnamese seafood and so on. We all need to get grip and realise, that trade has to be like having a bank account, we don't have to measure where the balance came from, just work at changing it
I don't mind a trade imbalance . I have a trade imbalance with my grocer and that is a good thing . I get his goods and he gets my cash. But he won't keep my cash . He will spend it on something else and so on and so on.
