Bang / Guns Title: Let's talk AR-15's Tell me what you know about AR-15's. Which ones would you guys recommend? Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest Make sure you buy a firearm that is already "match grade." And ensure you have capability to add scope rings.
#2. To: A K A Stone (#0) " Tell me what you know about AR-15's. " That could take up a lot of space. Suffice to say that they are fine weapons. " Which ones would you guys recommend? " Lot of choices. Colt, Bushmaster, Armalite, Knights Armament, Daniel Defense, DPMS, Rock River Arms, Windham Weaponry, Ruger, S&W, Sig Sauer, Double Star, and many others. Be sure to get a flat top upper. You can take the carry handle off, and mount a scope. If you go that route, get flip up sights, in case your scope fails. Otherwise, you will have to reattach the carry handle. Mostly you will find them with 16" bbls. Everyone is infatuated with the shorter bbl, more tacticool. I prefer the longer bbl 20". Gives a longer sight radius with irons, more accurate, and the extra 4" will give more vel & energy on target. Plus with the 20", you can attach a bayonet. I would never want to use that, but in combat, I would never discard an option. For mostly long range use, get a 24" flat top. You will see a variety of bbl twist rates. Best go with 1/9. That will give the best performance with most ammo. Twist rate is very important. If you buy one, buy at least 1,000 rd case of ammo, get brass cases, avoid the Russian steel case stuff. Get plenty of mags, and a spare parts set. Also, get a good set of web gear with pouches to carry your mags, and a sling for the rifle. Don't forget good cleaning gear. Don't get carried away with all the add on stuff. Some guys want to hang everything including a kitchen sink & microwave on the forearm. Keep it simple. With AR's, you will get a variety of opinions, everyone has their own. Try to find a dealer that has a range where you can try one out. If possible, maybe you have some friends that have them, and know their shit, that can give you a lot of info. Search the net, there are plenty of forums dedicated to firearms, and specifically AR's. Try Fal Files Forums. You will find a wealth of info. They are a pretty good bunch, ask a question, they will be very helpful. I am sure you will get some good advice right here at LF. If you guy one, let us know. #4. To: A K A Stone (#0) (Edited) I own a Colt Preban Hbar, new in box and I won't fire that, a Bushmaster M4A3 Patrolman set up and battle sight zero'd to me, and TEN... yes, Buckyboy, 10 new RockRiver lower receivers that I can make any caliber and barrel length I want.... or sell some for big bucks to those dipshits that aren't smart enough to PREPARE... like Buckyboy. I'm the infidel... Allah warned you about. كافر المسلح #5. To: A K A Stone (#0) Tell me what you know about AR-15's.
Civilian version of the M16 with no sensible civilian purpose... If you have a legitimate concern for self-defense, get yourself a good pistol and/or pump action shotgun... But if you want to shoot a military style weapon, then join the military...
#6. To: A K A Stone (#0) Which ones would you guys recommend? To me, brand doesn't matter all that much as all my ars (.30/7.62mm cal and .223/5.56mm) are chambered to fire either saami or nato rounds. And all of mine are mil-spec (except, of course, gas piston ones). I have wylde and ackley chambered ar15 and really don't find them any more accurate than a standard chamber. ymmv. All my ar15s have heavier barrels, either a bull barrel or a heavy varmint contour with either a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 twist because I wanted to shoot heavier bullets. But I have to hand feed each round because they won't fit in a magazine. For just plinking out to 300 yds or so, the standard coal (about 2 1/4") and 62 gr bullets work fine for me. I can even fit some 69 gr bullets in a mag but might have to use a compressed load. But the major consideration, imho, is direct impingement (di) or gas piston (piston) design. I have ultrasonic tanks so cleaning isn't much of an issue to me but I don't care much for hot brass or scalding bcgs and a rule of thumb is 'a gun shouldn't sh*t where it eats". But I really like stoner's design so I have both platforms. But even armalite offers both nowadays, I think. There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can add and those that can't #7. To: A K A Stone (#0) The AR-15 is manufactured by Colt. When you say "AR-15" I assume you mean "rifles similar in design and function to the AR-15", which opens the selection quite a bit. First, price. Under $1,000 or over $1000? You can find many under $1,000 ($700-$900) which will get you a basic direct gas impingement(DI) rifle. I've fired my son's LE6900 ($899) and it's a nice quality rifle from Colt. The LE6920 is a full featured rifle that goes for around $1300. But I've seen a trend from manufacturers moving away from DI and offering a next generation gas piston system. The rifle runs cooler and cleaner and is consequently more reliable. But it's a $500 premium. I assume you're right-handed and don't need ambidextrous controls. My checklist would be: -- Short-stroke gas piston operated You can add accessories later.
#8. To: Willie Green (#5) no sensible civilian purpose I want one to shoot hogs, which are ruining my pasture land. Your point is invalid.

On February 11, 2006, Dick Cheney shot Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old Texas attorney, while participating in a quail hunt at Armstrong ranch in Kenedy County, Texas.[205] Secret Service agents and medical aides, who were traveling with Cheney, came to Whittington's assistance and treated his birdshot wounds to his right cheek, neck, and chest. An ambulance standing by for the Vice President took Whittington to nearby Kingsville before he was flown by helicopter to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital. On February 14, 2006, Whittington had a non-fatal heart attack and atrial fibrillation due to at least one lead-shot pellet lodged in or near his heart.[206] Because of the small size of the birdshot pellets, doctors decided to leave up to 30 pieces of the pellets lodged in his body rather than try to remove them. OOPPSS!
#11. To: A K A Stone (#0) So Stone, are you ready to buy one yet? I wouldn't wait too long. Prices will be going up, and supply is already going down. And supply of ammo is getting thin. Prices on the ammo are most likely to go up as well. I have a LEO friend that has a couple of RRA complete rifles. He loves his. Very smart to have already acquired them, and salted them away. I would assume you already have complete uppers and BCG's to go with them. If not, I would acquire them now. I have a 24" upper with the old fixed handle. Have started to get rid of it, but it is so accurate, I just can not. I can put a scope on it, but it is just awkward. But with irons, it is amazing. I enjoy using irons occasionally, so I keep it. I really want one in a flat top to put glass on. Yeah, the idea is carried forward to ALL people that wonder about the competentcy of Cheney concerning shooting one of his best friends. Amazing he wasn't arrested and tried for attempted manslaughter, isn't it?
#19. To: GrandIsland (#17) " the fixed handle becomes more worthless and in the way. " True. I acquired it just before they came out with flat tops. ( gives you an idea of its vintage ) But damn, it is accurate, I have used it on targets out to 500 meters, can ping them all day. I even thought about replacing the upper rec with a flat top, but not worth it. Might as well get a whole new upper assembly. Besides, this one has the iron front sight gas block. Kinda funky now. But still damn accurate Si vis pacem, para bellum Those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who don't Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God. if you look around, we have gone so far down the the rat hole, the almighty is going to have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah, if we don't have a judgement come down on us.
