The chickenpox virus never leaves the body and it can come back as the painful rash of Shingles.
If you’ve had chickenpox, you can get Shingles at any time. It doesn’t matter how healthy you feel. Shingles can strike when you least expect it and can cause a blistering rash that may bring deep, penetrating pain.
The Shingles rash can last up to 30 days, and for most the pain lessens as the rash heals. But some people who develop Shingles experience long-term nerve pain that can last for months, even years.
As you get older, there’s a greater chance Shingles can happen to you.
It’s a simple fact that your immune system can weaken with age. And as a result, your chances of developing the Shingles rash increase as you get older. Vaccination is not recommended for people who are allergic to any of the ingredients in ZOSTAVAX, and people who have a suppressed immune system from taking autoimmune medicines, high doses of steroids, or have specific health conditions, such as HIV/AIDS.
One in five people who get Shingles will experience long-term nerve pain.
Most people recover from the nerve pain of Shingles as the rash heals. But one in five people who develop Shingles will experience postherpetic neuralgia, or PHN–nerve pain that can develop even after the rash heals, which can range from mild to severe and debilitating. This nerve pain can last from a few months to several years.

got
me
some
anti
viral
meds
that
helped
a
lot
the
doctor
got
me
on
Lyrica
to
help
the
pain
healing

I just had my annual check up. My Doctor asked me if I would be interested in a vaccination for shingles. I did not take him up on it, said I would think about it.
" Vaccination is not recommended for people who are allergic to any of the ingredients in ZOSTAVAX, and people who have a suppressed immune system from taking autoimmune medicines, high doses of steroids, or have specific health conditions, such as HIV/AIDS. " None of that applies to me.

I've had shingles twice. The first time it was very localized - the only place the rash broke the surface was in my ear canal.
I thought I had a brain tumor. Unbelievable throbbing, relentless pain in my head that no amount of painkiller could kill. They gave me Percocet, which just put me to sleep but didn't really stop the pain. Just so horrible.
Second time I got them they were more general, and they proceeded to pass out of the nerves into the general tissue and become full blown Chicken Pox, which are really miserable as an adult.
So, they say that if you get it as a kid, you're immune for life, though it may come back as shingles. They should hang an asterisk off of that that says some individuals do not develop full immunity, and may in fact experience chicken pox again.
My mother was the same way.
It is unfortunate not to develop that immunity. On the bright side, it's just chicken pox. Smallpox would likely be worse.
