Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told the Daily News editorial board that she wants to do more to "demilitarize the police," while admitting that the 1994 crime will was a mixed bag.
Hillary Clinton on Saturday conceded her husband’s 1994 crime bill had the unintended consequence of mass incarceration.
Speaking before the Daily News editorial board, Clinton said the bill did a lot of good things like adding more cops to the streets and creating a ban on assault weapons.
ut she said it also led states to enact policies that resulted in more people, especially people of color, being imprisoned for nonviolent crimes.
“That was not as apparent at the time, but part of being a responsible decision maker is to keep track of what’s happening,” she said. “And now I think it’s clear there were some consequences that we do have to address.”
Clinton talked about the need to crack down on gun violence, invest in police retraining, incentivize states to enact prison diversion programs and sentencing reforms, and push for the restoration of prison education programs.
In addition, she wants to do more to “demilitarize the police.” She said post 9/11, police departments both big and small were given military equipment.
Clinton, who recently apologized for having used the term “superpredators” when describing who the crime bill targeted, said she used the term “only once. Never did it again.”
Former President Bill Clinton last week shot back at protesters who say his crime bill harmed minority communities by saying it led to a reduction in crime. He also defended his wife’s use of the term “superpredators.”
“I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out into the streets to murder other African-American children,” he said.
The 1994 crime bill — passed under Former President Bill Clinton — led states to enact policies that resulted in more people, especially people of color, being imprisoned for nonviolent crimes. (2 images)

The Bushes, Oliver North & Bill Clinton were all deeply involved in the drug trade in the 1980's
This post covers the Bill Clinton CIA drug connection; but the Bushes & Oliver North were even more deeply involved in the CIA drug trade which was going on nationwide in the 1980's, not just in Mena, AR, or Florida. CIA/military and protected drug pilots would fly the drugs in (or in some case speed boats were used), then they would hand it off to the black gangs, the mafia, Hell's Angels (as per Al Martin) and some right wing militias who had distribution networks nationwide.
The CIA was wholesaling drugs and a corrupted government (both Republican & Democratic) was protecting distribution networks; your local drug gang was retailing it.
Ever wonder why Bill Clinton & the Bushes are so chummy? Because both were up to their eyeballs in gargantuan 1980's CIA drug smuggling, money laundering & financial crime. They have permanent liability. And I am 100% sure that the CIA was murdering people, including Barry Seal (2/19/86) to keep a lid on all this epic criminality.
The American CIA was operating hand in glove with Columbian cocaine cartels as well as buying heroin from the Golden Triangle. Yes, it was a phony drug war with Nancy Reagan "just saying no" while CIA/Bush/Clinton/Oliver North drug cartel was smuggling in the most drugs in world history to any single country - ever.

The story of Gary Webb the journalist who wrote the series on CIA drug smuggling for the San Jose Mercury News, and was subsequently murdered for it.
His death was ruled a suicide. although he was found dead in his Carmichael home with two gunshot wounds to the head.
