International News Title: Newly discovered planet could destroy Earth any day now A mysterious planet that wiped out life on Earth millions of years ago could do it again, according to a top space scientist. And some believe the apocalyptic event could happen as early as this month. Planet Nine — a new planet discovered at the edge of the solar system in January — has triggered comet showers that bomb the Earth’s surface, killing all life, says Daniel Whitmire, of the University of Louisiana.
The astrophysicist says the planet has a 20,000-year orbit around the sun and, at its closest to us, it knocks asteroids and comets toward Earth. Fossil evidence has suggested most life on Earth is mysteriously wiped out every 26 million to 27 million years. Whitmire claims Planet Nine’s passage through a rock-laden area called the Kuiper Belt is responsible for the “extinction events.” Conspiracy theorists in the ’80s and ’90s previously claimed a red dwarf planet called Nibiru or Nemesis, which orbits too close to Earth every 36,000 years, was behind the events. Now some are convinced there will be a collision or a near miss before the end of April. Nemesis or Nibiru was widely dismissed as crackpot pseudo-science — until Planet Nine was identified in January by the California Institute of Technology. The NY Post has become quite the tabloid. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8) #2. To: redleghunter, cranky (#1) (Edited) The article is ridiculous. No reputable astronomer thinks that Planet Nine, if it exists, will ever get close to Earth. Here is info on the semi-retired crackpot astronomer that the article does quote (yes, he was big into Planet X too): Heavy.com: Daniel Whitmire & Planet X: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know
Nemesis or Nibiru was widely dismissed as crackpot pseudo-science — until Planet Nine was identified in January by the California Institute of Technology. Notice that they couldn't find a single CalTech employee to say that or who has written anything like that. Sheer tabloid filler. The interest among astronomers is that it is a possible planet the size of or larger than Earth that putters about the outer solar system and perturbs the orbits of Kuiper Belt planetoids. Wiki has a good anigif that explains what is hypothesized about Planet Nine by real astronomers. If Planet Nine exists, it never gets anywhere near Earth. This reminds me of the idiocy about Planet X (which melted as it approached the Sun instead of destroying us all). OTOH, I do understand why some people are praying for SMOD (Smoldering Meteor of Death) to save us all from a contested GOP convention.
#3. To: cranky (#0) is this a left over April fools day joke?

To: paraclete (#3) is this a left over April fools day joke? That was my first thought, too. But as wrongheaded as the Post can be, it usually manages to get the right date. To: cranky (#0) A mysterious planet that wiped out life on Earth millions of years ago could do it again, according to a top space scientist. The earth wasn't wiped out millions of years ago. It has only been around for several thousand. He is not a scientist but a propagandist.

#9. To: A K A Stone (#8) That Wiki anigif is a dead giveaway.

We contacted Whitmire via e-mail to ask about the Post's claim that all life on Earth could be wiped out in April 2016, and he quickly replied: "No truth to the story at all. That's quite impossible." Plan 9 From Outer Space.
#15. To: nolu chan (#14) (Edited) No truth to the story at all. That's quite impossible." well of course it goes without saying. If such a threat existed we would already be aware of it. If nabiru or what ever it is actually exists, and I have strong doubts, we would see a lot more disturbance in the Oort cloud. I too was a fan of Velochosky in my youth but think about the events 3,500 years ago, if that is all it has to offer, a few meteor showers, a fall out of sweetbread, a tsunami and earthquakes, I think we might survive that. Someone is trying to tell us we can find planets orbiting distant stars and yet we cannot find a "near Earth" object with all the stargazing we are doing
