A tax advocacy group on Wednesday revealed that Americans spend more on taxes than their whole budget for food, clothing and housing.

The Tax Foundation, in its annual report on when the nation as a whole has earned enough to pay its taxes, announced the date as April 24.

"Tax Freedom Day gives us a vivid representation of how much federal, state, and local tax revenue is collected each year to pay for government goods and services," said Tax Foundation Analyst Scott Greenberg. "Arguments can be made that the tax bill is too high or too low, but in order to have an honest discussion, it's important for taxpayers to understand the cost of government. Tax Freedom Day helps people relate to that cost."

The report's key findings include:

— Collectively, Americans will spend more on taxes in 2016 than they will on food, clothing, and housing combined.

— Americans will pay $3.3 trillion in federal taxes and $1.6 trillion in state and local taxes, for a total bill of almost $5.0 trillion, or 31 percent of the nation's income.

— Tax Freedom Day is one day earlier than last year, due mainly to the Protecting America from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, which made several business and individual tax cuts permanent.

— If you include annual federal borrowing, which represents future taxes owed, Tax Freedom Day would occur 16 days later on May 10.

you have to be kidding, you are paying this level of taxation and you don't have free health service, free education and a vivrant economy. Well one thing for sure you won't see a tax led recovery. You should drop your military expenditure by 2% and put that into doing something for the people so they can generate income

You hit the nail on the head. THAT is the price of worldwide military empire, and the drag of debt from past imperial adventures (that we lost, and that left a country full of war cripples).

Our taste for war and empire is strong - has been since we thought we conquered the world in 1845, and it has become so natural to us that suggesting pulling back from empire and cutting defense expenditure for an empire we don't need is called "irresponsible" and every other damned thing.

Truth is, America will go bankrupt and eventually default if we don't lose our taste for empire. World War II bankrupted the British Empire, compelling its rapid breakup in the face of renewed nationalism around the globe. Britain lacked the resources to even ATTEMPT to hold it together.

The French, for their part, DID try to hold their empire. They lost it anyway, but at great expense and national trauma.

The Soviets held on longer, but eventually succumbed.

We were King Shit on Turd Mountain, and have held off longest of all, but the debt keeps going up and up, and once you hit about $24 billion, the interest on the debt hits a point where we can no longer meet current expenses and borrow more. You can get by for a few years printing money, but when there are other reserve currencies waiting in the wings, and when you've already printed trillions, you can't do that without inflation.

Then we CAN'T pay for the army or social services. Try to do both half-assedly (which we will do), and we will just degrade and degrade and degrade, like the Soviets did, until the political will that holds the empire and the social state together fails. And then the social state wins and America unravels in bankruptcy.

It's a real mess. The only solution is to start getting out of Empire NOW, like Trump - and Trump ALONE among all of the GOP candidates (Bernie Sanders says this on the Left too) - says.

If Trump wins, or Sanders win, American foreign policy will change pretty quickly, and the cuts and pullbacks will come, and our debt problem will start to be resolved, and then our social services will get better.

So did you. I can't disagree with anything you said. Lets hope and pray that things work out.

What you need is not hope and prayer, I'm sure you have had much of that, but action which can only come from a change in attitude. I don't hold the apocolytic view Vicomte that the US must melt down in the way you describe but you do need to retreat behind your pacific wall. Only today we have reports of your Admiral having to be muzzled like a rabid dog.
