Sabre rattling has reached new heights as the North Koreans chuck a tantrum because their threats are not taken seriously and someone wants to take their toys away. Once again we move closer to war on the Korean pensinula, a result of not finishing off the cold war conflict. A world tired of war can be excused for taking the easy way out, but a ceasation of hostilities does not mean the war is over, at least not in the minds of one of the belligerants.

the proof of statesmanship will be seen in the way world leaders respond and threats of nuclear war from the Dump will be unhelpfull

Yes, the ongoing tensions are the result of neither side's winning the original now. But what is it that you're proposing? Breaking the UN armistice and invading North Korea for the purposes of conquering it.

And when the Chinese intervene, as they did last time, what then?

But what is it that you're proposing?

No, I'm proposing that the US stop inflaming the situation by holding military exercises close to North Korea and engage the North Koreans in meaningful treaty negotiations that will remove the need to engage in military confrontation. The Chinese were a combatant in Korea but any thought of fighting a war with them had been shelved until recently.

We are all aware that the regime in NK is difficult but they are paranoid and every time the US engages in military exercises in the region they see it as direct confrontation thus they feel the need to assert themselves.

How unhelpfull is it that a proposal for South Korea and Japan become nuclear armed is touted for political gain, it is the politics of stupidity to goad the NK in this way.

That's what led to the NORK nuclear bomb. It's always blame America first . The US holds exercises with South Korea so they can better defend themselves . If we left the peninsula the Norks shelling of Seoul would commence 5 minutes later.

maybe, maybe not, but Tom stop playing the straw man, you weren't asked to leave, just stop being provocative. You want South Korea to engage in exercises with you, invite them to the US and while you are at it invite the North Koreans. No, you like to play your little intimidation games and wonder why it is not well received. you know as well as I do NK would not last long in a real war, this is why they play their games, but you love to play the schoolyard bully

Do you exercise with China? what's the difference? One you will engage with on an equal footing, the other you will not. While you are at it get BO to shut up, he may as well have handed the terrorists a manual on nuclear terrorism and NK was listening as was Daesh

Faced with a China aggressively taking over the South China Sea, a nuclear-armed South Korea, Japan, Philippines and Taiwan seems like an interesting idea.

It removes the necessity of defending these countries, at great danger to ourselves, and serves to demonstrate to China and to North Korea that if you nuke up and start pushing people around, they can nuke up and stop you in your tracks.

And if the damnfool North Koreans actually push the button, they die in a series of fireballs and the issue is settled.

By contrast, as it stands now, if the Chinese flex their muscles excessively, we have to decide whether or not we're willing to risk war with China. Ditto for the North Koreans.

Far better to complicate the Chinese strategic picture by having the nations they are trying to push around nuclear armed and capable of pushing them back.

Nuclear weapons kept the peace since 1945. They keep the peace between India and Pakistan.

They mean that even if the US abandoned NATO, the British and French have a sanctuary in Western Europe that no foreign army can break (other than through uncontrolled immigration and subversion).

nukes like every other weapon invented will eventually be used . It is the height of folly that Trump thinks it is a good idea to proliferate them to South Korea ,Japan ,and South America. It is even dumber for the emperor to promote an Iranian bomb as he has done with his foolish concessions to the 12ers.

They HAVE BEEN used, by us, on Japan.

The impact of that event is seared on the world's imagination.

Nuclear weapons are the REASON that Stalin's Russia and the USA didn't go to war after World War II, during the Berlin Blocade, for instance.

The United States should not be forever providing the defense of Japan and South Korea, mighty nations, at our risk and our expense. Those nations should provide for their own defense, and the way they should do it against China (which they cannot beat in a direct conventional fight) is with their own nuclear weapons.

Taiwanese independence against an aggressive China should not simply be vouchsafed by America being held hostage to nuclear fire by China. The Taiwanese should have their own nuclear forces capable of destroying China, should the Chinese choose to invade.

The virtue of nukes is that they are much cheaper than large conventional forces, and a much greater deterrent. In the 1940s, Germany was able to surprise France and overrun her, But with nuclear weapons, not even the Soviet Union could successfully overrun France and survive.

They balance small nations against huge nations, because small nations with a substantial nuclear force can obliterate the largest nations.

Mutually Assured Destruction keeps the peace.

they call it MAD for a reason. Did you notice that Russia was not a participant in the emperor's charade ? You do know that since the city killers we used against Japan that tactical nukes have been invented to augment conventional forces ? Russia possesses an estimated 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons. The United States Army and Navy operate without tactical nuclear weapons. The US Air Force retains a small stockpile of these weapons . The Russians believe they can win a nuclear war. In 2000, Russia introduced a military doctrine that proposed the use of limited nuclear strikes as a way to “deescalate” a conventional conflict . That means that the deterrence factor is much less than it used to be.

And I'm talking about rational states here .Do you think that MAD works as advertised when states who's political leadership believe that their mandate is to create the chaos necessary in the world for the Madhi to emerge from the well he fell into ? Great idea ! Give the 12ers the nuke ;give the Sunni states the nuke and let's see how long they are deterred from using them. That is a recipe for proliferation to surrogate terrorist groups .

India's and Pakistan's possession of nukes hadn't stopped the aggression between them. Their forces battle constantly in border disputes . Pakistan has been a key power in proliferation to rogue states . And Israel's arsenal hasn't stopped it from being threatened.

Do you realize that there are many grudges against the Japanese that still remain ? The people in the Pacific rim may not share our view that Japan can be trusted . Yes Japan should contribute more to their defense . But not nukes .Does Trump realize that they would've a long time ago if they weren't living under a constitution we imposed on them that prohibit them from most military ventures ? Having nations like Japan ,South Korea and Taiwan under the American nuclear umbrella was part of the reason that there were no wars using nukes during the cold war. Meanwhile the emergence of a nuclear North Korea means that it is virtually impossible to depose the Kim regime.

"No, no, not proliferation," , "I hate nuclear more than any." Maybe he doesn't know what proliferation means ? This is what he said when pressed about Saudia Arabia ....Saudis should have nuclear weapons. Then he said that they shouldn't, and then that maybe it's inevitable so they probably should anyway. This is the rational actor you want with his hand on the nuclear button ?

"If you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools." Plato

We do not determie whether or not nations nuke up. If Japan wants nuclear weapons, we certainly can't stop them.

All we can do is create the conditions conducive to their going that way, but saving ourselves money by drawing back our forces.

Then the Japanese will face a relatively simple set of choices: arm up conventionally to oppose China. This will require THEM to cut into their civilian economy to support a military. Right now it's AMERICANS who live at a lower standard of living than we have to because WE cut into our OWN people's hide to defend Japan. Force that decision upon the Japanese: THEY must accept a lower standard of living to have the conventional forces to defend themselves.

OR they can take one of the other choices:

(a) Save all of that conventional force money and nuke up. Nukes are a cheap way for advanced nations to secure sovereignty.

OR

(b) Accept their role as a second tier power and stop antagonizing China. Negotiate the ocean boundaries with China and accept that, China being the stronger party, China will get the better deal.

Either way, AMERICANS are no longer taxed to protect the standard of living of Japanese. The Japanese will have to decide what they want, and then pay the price for it.

The MOST SENSIBLE answer is to negotiate directly with China, understanding that China is stronger and will get most of what it wants. Buy off the Chinese by letting them have some ocean bottom. There's plenty of ocean bottom around Japan.

If that is unacceptable, then pay the price of demanding more and having ongoing hostility with China, by having to spend large amounts of your seed capital maintaining larger-than-necessary conventional forces or nuclear forces, all to secure a claim to sea bottom that you're not even using at present.

It's up to them. For us, we should get out of the business of impoverishing our own people to defend Europe and Asia. Let them impoverish their people, leaving us with seed-capital to become more competitive and win back market share in our own country.
