politics and politicians Title: At Debate, Trump Praise for Tiananmen Square Massacre Sparks Outrage Online As far as 2016 Republican debates go, the GOP's most recent matchup in Miami on Thursday was noteworthy for its calmness. Gone were the crude insults, petulant back-and-forths and rumination about penis size. One comment, however, made by Donald Trump more than 25 years ago, in which he seemingly defended the Chinese Communist party's massacre of pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, came back to haunt the candidate onstage. "When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," he told Playboy in 1990, according to the Independent. "That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak." The massacre on June 4, 1989, in the heart of the Chinese capital left untold hundreds dead and nearly toppled the country's Communist oligarchs. Its memory still lingers in China as a point of unique unease to this day. Trump — true to form — refused to back away and denied that his use of the word "strength" more than a quarter-century ago should be taken as an endorsement. "Strong doesn't mean good," he told moderator Jake Tapper, referring to another controversial leader Trump has praised, Russia's president Vladimir Putin. The Republican frontrunner faced broad denouncement on Twitter — with a number of people suggesting that the real strength lay with the mostly student protesters and not the tanks with mowed them down. Trump's political hero is that tank that ran over the kid in Tiananmen Square. Strong leader. Donald Trump calls Tiananmen Square protests a 'riot' put down by a strong Chinese government, getting nervous yet? Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest The massacre on June 4, 1989, in the heart of the Chinese capital left untold hundreds dead This is the photo of this massacre: And this is how Yeltsin imposed Western style democracy on Russian Parliament in 1993: President Bill Clinton stated explicitly that "President Yeltsin has made his choice, and I support him fully."
Ambassador-at-Large for the former Soviet Union Strobe Talbott referred to Yeltsin’s dissolution of parliament as a "noisy squabble." With this support, Yeltsin sent in the tanks two weeks later, on October 4, and swept the Supreme Soviet into the dustbin of history. It was surely noisy, but rather more than a squabble.
#2. To: Deckard (#0) "the real strength lay with the mostly student protesters" They accomplished nothing.
#3. To: misterwhite (#2) (Edited) They accomplished nothing. Au Contrare, as you've demonstrated - they helped illustrate the desensitizing nature of being constantly bombarded with technocratic "information". As the alien anthropologists/archaeologists will someday note after digging us up - that's not "nothing".
Ain't Reality TeeVee great?
#4. To: VxH (#3) (Edited) You're right. I shouldn't have said they accomplished nothing. Their actions did result in that nonsensical YouTube video. So there's that. (But Four Dead in O-Hi-O was better.)
#5. To: Deckard, redleghunter, TooConservative, AKA Stone (#0) At the debate ,Trump called the protest by the students a 'riot' ,that the "strong, powerful government” of Communist China put down. That is the same way the Chinese governments describes it . Clearly he meant that if they hadn't violently put the protest down they would've 'blown' it . Have you noticed how often he praises the actions of thug leaders as "strong" leaders . He has called Putin a strong leader ;a“man so highly respected within his own country and beyond.” When challenged he replied , “he’s running his country, and at least he’s a leader, unlike what we have in this country.” He praised NORK Kim Jong Un ,saying he deserves ‘credit’ for wiping out rivals. He praised Saddam Hussein .“You know, Saddam Hussein was a bad guy.But one thing about him: He killed terrorists. Saddam Hussein understood and he killed terrorists.” What Saddam Hussien killed were thousands of Kurdish ,Shia and yes even Sunni citizens and brutally suppressed any dissent . Is autocratic thug leaders his role model ? Evidently so ;as long as they are winners. "If you do not take an interest in the affairs of your government, then you are doomed to live under the rule of fools." Plato #6. To: misterwhite (#4) (Edited) So there's that. This species has amused itself to __________?
thanks to "heroes" like (D-)onald (D-)rumpf and their fans who all have the bravery, from being....
#7. To: tomder55 (#5) He praised NORK Kim Jong Un ,saying he deserves ‘credit’ for wiping out rivals. Praising the genocidal Nork regime is completely beyond the pale. But Trump has done that many times. It isn't "speaking truth to power" or "being a fresh outside". It's being a loudmouth crackpot who hasn't thought through his positions and just blurts nonsense out regularly. For all the votes he's getting, Trump is actually a really lousy retail politician.
#8. To: Deckard (#0) Where will the clown car make its next stop? For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8) #9. To: Deckard (#0) (Edited) One comment, however, made by Donald Trump more than 25 years ago, in which he seemingly defended the Chinese Communist party's massacre of pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, came back to haunt the candidate onstage. Where's the comment? I'd like to read it. I remember watching the Tiananmen Square riots back then. I felt so overwhelmed by the Chinese people and their struggle to fight oppression against their government. It disturbs me when I hear of candidates and others in public servant positions condoning the abuses onto those Chinese people. It sickens me.
