Chicago police: We were not consulted in decision to cancel Trump rally

Chicago police "were not consulted" and "did not provide an opinion" on Donald Trump's decision to cancel a rally in Chicago, the department said Friday night.

The department made clear to the Trump campaign that "we were confident we had the proper amount of resources dedicated to the event," interim Supt. of Police John Escalante said in a news conference.

Escalante said 200 Chicago police officers were initially deployed to the event and an additional 100 were sent as a precaution upon word that the rally might be canceled.

He said the police were "taken by surprise" at the decision to cancel, particularly since his officers told the campaign they could "could guarantee safe access and exit to Mr. Trump."

Once the rally was called off, Escalante said, "several scuffles had broken out inside the pavilion."

Two people were arrested by the Chicago police, two by University of Illinois at Chicago officers, and one by state police.

Escalante said two officers were injured, including one who was struck in the head with a bottle, suffering a cut that required stitches.

"It's unfortunate that parties on both sides allowed their political views to become confrontational," he said.

A Chicago Police Department spokesman told The Associated Press that the police did not suggest Donald Trump cancel his Friday night rally, contrary to what Trump has said in interviews.

"CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the AP that the department did not recommend Trump call off the event and said they had sufficent manpower to cover the rally. Guglielmi said that the decision to shut down the event was made "independently" by the Trump campaign.

That runs contrary to what Trump has said in interviews since massive protests engulfed his event and supporters clashed with demonstrators after the cancellation announcement."

Here is a first hand account from freerepublic. I haven't even read it all.

At 2:30 p.m., I arrived at the Donald Trump rally located at the UIC pavilion in Chicago, IL. There was light police presence at the Blue Line station, and the pavilion was short walk away. There I waited in line for about an hour until making it to the front doors, going through a security scanner, and finding a seat in the main hall.

For nearly two hours the pavilion filled until it neared capacity. It was clear that protesters were seated around the room, given easily away by their manner of dress. Most of the Trump supporters, being suburbanite or small town white people from outside of Chicago, were dressed strikingly normal—jeans and t-shirts, yoga pants or dresses, and the occasional suit.

The first protestors began around 5:30 when two young white males pulled off their coats to reveal t-shirts with anti-Trump slogans. At this point I noticed the police presence inside the rally was a mere 8 police officers, bolstered with hands-off event staff.

Before 6:00 p.m., a man spoke on the microphone and requested that rally attendees do not touch or harm protesters who interrupt the event. He reminded the protesters that Donald Trump supports the first amendment as much as the second.

Following this was a string of smaller incidents, such as people holding up improvised signs and shouting. One entire bleacher row was filled with protesters and they began chanting and throwing around torn up signs.

A few people who began standing up and screaming, and were slowly escorted out by police. The police kept leaving the protesters unattended throughout this, taking 4-8 officers to escort protesters out one at a time.

A black man in a black jacket ran up to the front stage, bumped into the podium, and attempted to speak, but was wrestled down by two men in suits. As they escorted him through the crowd, he took a swing at a Trump supporter. The men escorting him were incredibly gentle and restrained themselves from using any force.

Then voice came on and declared that the event was postponed. A few minutes later, they informed us that Trump had landed in Chicago and spoken to Chicago Police officers, and that due to safety concerns, the rally was canceled.

At this point, the protesters began to descend into chaos. Aside from a few mild “TRUMP” and “USA” chants, the Trump supporters were mostly quiet and bewildered as the protesters began to scream, chant, and run around the main floor area in a huge pack, flipping off the rally attendees and swearing at them. There were a few tense altercations between the two groups, but from what I saw at this point, no violence.

The rally was instructed to leave the pavilion, and I have to admit, the Chicago Police messed up bad here. We walked straight out of the building and into enormous packs of protesters screaming at us, with little police presence to protect the Trump supporters.

Following this, I wandered the protest grounds to see what was going on. My memory is a bit jumbled at this point because I was so pumped up, but let me string together the events as clearly as possible:

Many of Trump propaganda signs, most commonly depicting him as Adolf Hitler, but others showing him with a small penis, simple signs of text English and Spanish, signs. Young women shouting anti-white racial epithets.

“THE PEOPLE ARE UNITED. WE WILL NOT BE DIVIDED” being shouted at Trump supporters who holed themselves up in a parking garage, quietly fearing for their safety.

Another good one by the protesters was “FREEDOM FIRST! FREEDOM FIRST!” Strangely enough, there were a good amount of signs calling for peace and freedom. Lots of peace signs being flashed with the fingers.

A single white Trump supporter who held up a sign and stood quietly as three dozen people surrounded him, smiling and screaming, snatching and pushing at him until he had to run for police cover. Someone grabbed his American flag and threw it on the ground and he fought to recover it. The police escorted him away.

Two young men, perhaps 17-19, standing quietly as they waited for a ride home. They were wearing their MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN hats, looking terrified as people cursed and swore at them, and occasionally threw furious challenges for debate. The two young men held their ground. Only once did one of those hats come down, and it quickly went back on again.

A general atmosphere of pleasure and happiness from the protesters. A common chant was “WE WON!” and “WE STUMPED THE TRUMP!” It honestly felt like a social event for the protesters. There was plenty of mingling

Plenty of shouts at Trump protesters that Trump and his supporters are not welcome in Chicago. I challenged one on the first amendment. He said he does not consider himself an American and continued insulting the grizzled old white man he was arguing with.

Extremely inefficient police presence. The cops were lined up on their horses or standing behind barricades, but generally were not present where Trump supporters were being hounded and occasionally struck by protesters. The protesters were primarily composed of millennial-aged: white hipsters, African Americans, Hispanics, and Muslims. Some of the protesters were teenagers below voting age.

The protesters flew a big set of American, Mexican, and Puerto Rican flags. There were lots of small American and Mexican flags too. *The Trump supporters mostly fled for safety immediately. You have to understand, they were outnumbered by thousands of protesters.

There was media presence, but not as much as you’d think. Plenty of areas where chaos was going on had no media nearby. The reporters were mostly getting people to talk to them off to the side where nothing was going on, or focusing ongoing debates between Trump supporters and rally members.

A small amount of the protesters were smoking weed. (I have nothing against this personally, just included for accuracy.)

Plenty of chants for “BERNIE! BERNIE! BERNIE!” Some Trump supporters looked at each other in bewilderment. “But Bernie Sanders isn’t even running against Donald Trump,” was the common sentiment.

Edit: The Trump supporters had a general trust for the police, while the protesters saw their presence as antagonistic. This is especially interesting to me, because as a foreigner and person of color I am generally afraid of police.

Closing statement:

Obviously I did not see everything that occurred as I wandered the protest grounds outside the cancelled Chicago rally. What I did see, however, was fear. Fear from the rally attendees for their immediate safety, and fear of Donald Trump from the protesters.

More than that, I feel that I experienced today, for the first time in my life, true totalitarianism and authoritarianism, expressed laterally from citizen to citizen, in order to silence opinions from being shared. This enforcement was shared through sheer numbers and intimidation, and in a few cases, violence.

People brought their children, loved ones, and friends to attend the Trump rally. I saw an older Asian man and his white wife in attendance, and the looks on their faces when the rally was declared cancelled almost broke my heart. I saw scared children clinging to their parents’ sides as they exited the building to the screams of protesters. I saw a quiet, but excited crowd of Donald Trump supporters get thrown out of Chicago. Worst of all, I saw the first amendment trampled, spit on, and discarded like trash.

This cannot go on. As I finish this, I feel a sense of utter dread and hopelessness for what is becoming of the youth in this country, particularly those of the regressive left. So polarized has political opinion become, that dissenting thoughts on college campuses are now seen as hateful. These people deal in absolutes. They are right, and whatever means they must take to achieve their ends, they will do it. They will not stop themselves from violence or censorship. They will do it, and they will call hell down upon you if anyone dare does upon them the same.

Tonight I went to the Trump Rally to hear the thoughts of not only the man who was supposed to come and speak, but the people who support him. I found respect. I found calmness. I found peace.

The truth is, I am a legal immigrant, not a US citizen. I am not American. I am not white. I cannot vote.

After tonight, I support Donald Trump.

Lastly, for anyone who thinks the protesters didn’t incite violence tonight, I offer you this.

Absurdist bullshit is going on.

Trump said he consulted with law enforcement. He did not say he consulted with the Chicago PD. Trump's security is provided by the Secret Service.

https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20160311/near-west-side/trump-on-canceled-chicago-rally-our-freedom-of-speech-was-violated

[Trump] "And we made a decision, even though our freedom of speech was violated totally. We made a decision not to go forward. I don't want to see anyone get hurt. You would have had some people possibly getting hurt or beyond. So I made the decision, in conjunction with law enforcement."

In a statement, Chicago Police said: "Shortly before 6:30 pm, the Chicago Police Department was notified by officials that the Trump campaign had cancelled their scheduled event. We are continuing to work with our partners in the United States Secret Service and the University of Illinois at Chicago Police to protect people's First Amendment rights and ensure everyone is able to disperse the area safely."

Quoting Trump: "I met with law enforcement. I don't want to see any one hurt. ... So I met with law enforcement, and I think we made the wise decision to cancel. Now it's pretty well broken up and no major problems.

No one calls the SS "law enforcement" other than currency counterfeiters.

I think Trump chickened out and is trying to blame the cops for his own cowardice.

You're glad that a crowd of punks was able to shut down a Republican rally by threatening violence and roughing up the Republicans who attend.

You hate Trump so much you've abandoned reason.

There have been riots in Chicago before over political issues. Trump, wisely, decided not to go in and incite one.

Chicago is a thoroughly corrupt city and you know it - Hello - OBAMA - RAHM EMMANUEL - you know this too.

You've become deranged by Trump, and you sound like Democrats who went sideways over Bush.

Stop and think for a minute.

You've gotten yourself so worked up, so COMMITTED to the idea of stopping Donald Trump, that you're HAPPY when punks stage a quasi-riot and rough up your fellow Republicans. Anything that stops Trump is good, by your eyes.

And that's nuts.

You've drawn lines about Trump and taken stands against him, and now you're so committed to it that you're literally willing to throw Illiinois Republicans to a ravening mob, and ridicule Trump for not having arrived and knowingly touched off a riot.

Think about what you're doing, and pull back from the ledge you've put yourself on.

Something you don't like is about to happen. Donald Trump is going to win your party's nomination and be the standard bearer. You sound more deranged than me now. Before Trump, I hated the Republicans so much that I wanted to see them electorally beaten. But you hate Trump so bad that you actually want to see Republicans PHYSICALLY beaten, by black and immigrant mobs in Chicago - ANYTHING that hurts Trump supporters is ok by you.

And anything that Trump does is wrong. If he walks into the trap and a riot ensues, as has happened in Chicago more than once, it's his fault for complete lack of prudence. If he decides NOT to spark a riot, he's a sissy.

Listen to yourself! You actually sound more deranged than I do. Is that what you want? Especially given that you're not going actually BEAT Trump by behaving that way anyway?

I think you want to remain the thoughtful type, the mechanic who understands campaigns, rallies, "how things work". If you really want to get into brass-knuckle mob politics then here's the truth: blacks and Hispanics are a lot more aggressive, a lot more violent, and a lot more willing to use mob action to beat down white Republicans than the reverse. So if you support this sort of thing just to defeat Trump, remember that you yourself and whoever YOU support can also be beaten to a bloody pulp by mobs of angry black protestors, and the Black Panthers can intimidate YOU just as easily as they intimidated Trump supporters. AND THEY WILL if you give them the victory.

I myself think that what happened in Chicago here ought to cause people like you to say "Wait a damn minute! I don't like Trump, but I'm not going to have crowds of black and illegal punks determining who can speak in American cities. I'd rather have Trump than see THOSE guys win through mob rule!" And change your mind.

Come off the ledge of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It's unseemly. "Anybody But Trump" is going to fail. He will be the nominee. "ANYBODY" but Trump means "Hillary Clinton instead of Trump!" It means "Bernie Sanders instead of Trump!" It means "Joe Biden, not Trump!" And it means "Al Sharpton and his tactics, if that will stop Trump".

And if you hate Trump THAT bad, you have taken leave of reason.

Trump said he consulted with law enforcement. He did not say he consulted with the Chicago PD.

Either you or he lie. I want to know the truth of the situation. Either Trump pulled a false flag con or some in the media with the help of the Chicago PD (and we all know who the mayor is) are pulling a major Nazi like move to influence the election.

Trump stands by claim Chicago police advised event cancellation

" Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stood by his campaign's comments that they chose to cancel a Chicago rally Friday night at the recommendation of the Chicago Police Department.

"We met with security and the law enforcement, who I think did a terrific job, and they told me it'd be best not to go in and do the speech," Trump reiterated in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity after the postponed event.

When asked again by Hannity on whether law enforcement motivated his decision, Trump again responded affirmatively.

But the GOP front-runner's statement clashed with clarifying comments a spokesman for Chicago law enforcement made hours after the event was shut down. CPD said the agency never advised the businessman turned politician to cancel the rally.

CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed to the AP it never told Trump's team of a security threat at the University of Illinois at Chicago venue. Instead, CPD said police had the manpower to deal with any situation that arose.

Trump also fingered an unlikely culprit for the event cancellation.

"The country is going to hell. This is an Obama situation, too. He has caused tremendous division in this country ... Right now, we have a very divided country," Trump said. The real estate tycoon told Hannity he would create more jobs and in turn, improve morale among Americans, which he believes would change to how Americans relate to one another.

Trump said he expects the protests will only cause more supporters to come out to his future rallies.

"I think cancelling turned out to be a very good decision," said Trump, ranked first in the Washington Examiner's presidential power rankings."

The events of last night can be a major game changer. The truth MUST be made known.

On balance I believe Trump or his team did consult with the CPD and likely received the CPD's recommendation to cancel. But it is entirely possible Trump is pulling a false flag. If the former shame on the country, this will engender retaliation which could easily escalated across the board. If the latter shame on Trump, he will lose the election but just slinks off into the sunset. So keep take knee jerk attacks on me and shove them up you ass. You too should be concerned that the truth of the situation is made abundantly clear, especially by the MSM.

I have no doubt that the protesters incited violence as was their intention. The question is whether Trump used the CPD as an excuse to take advantage of the situation by cancelling the rally. You have to believe that there will be blowback at his next rally.

I believe that Trump just cancelled or cut short this morning's rally. This is a BFD.

The same is far more true of you, falling over yourself in your first man-crush on a Republican. It's embarrassing to watch.

Perhaps. But I never pretend to be objective, or that objectivity is even achievable by human beings. I don't believe that it is. I believe in decision by emotion, and I believe that it is emotions - love, hate, pride, worship, fear, love again, compassion - these are the things that make human life human and worth living.

I never pretend to be a clinical observer, other than when observing how the ball will fall through a machine, given physics or the state of the law.

But you do think of yourself as objective, as fact-based, as not driven by emotions.

So, it's not a surprise, nor something that troubles me, that I am caught up in the great enthusiasm for somebody I like as a leader. Why not?

But you think of such views themselves as being the views of the mob, uneducation, emotional, based on passion not reason.

I hate, and I love, I won't go out and fight and kill for a paycheck, but I will for a cause - if I believe in it. But if I'm fighting and killing and the cause betrays me, I am the sort to angrily turn the guns on my own offiers and kill them as traitors. I am passionate and committed, and if I'm going to kill, then the cause has to be right. If my own "side" starts doing wrong things, I'll kill them too without much compunction.

When Calley went and machine gunned villagers at My Lai, I would have been the guy who protected them with the helicopter - except that I would have opened fire on Calley and blown his head off, not simply kept him away.

That's me. I've never been anything but that, and never pretended to be. I don't join causes unless I beieve in them, but once I do believe and do join, I do so with passion.

That's not you, and you've never wanted to by anything like that. You view that as atavistic, animalistic, mob passion - intellectually inferior and dangerous.

But you're so mad at Trump that you're ready to get into the mud and wrestle with the pig, to become me.

Of course I understand that: your objectivity was merely because nothing REALLY moved you before. You're human, now you're moved, so now you're acting like people OUGHT to act, with passion, with fury.

Mobs create nations.

I'm just pointing out to you that you are becoming to me.

YOU might be embarrassed by my "man crush" on Trump, and think I should be embarrassed, but of course I'm not embarrassed. "Man-crushes" don't embarrass me. Neither does passion for women. Or passion for anything. Loves and hates, lusts and fire and earth and wind. My God is a God of love and of wrath, not an accountant.

It's interesting to see YOU behaving this way. I guess Trump brings out the human male in you. Are you SURE you want to leave the safe confines of the accountant's library? You've made fun of us out here so long for being "the mob", you really SURE you want to join a mob? If you are, then I'd suggest you use your brain and not join the German Army, not hoist the Confederate flag, not cry Banzai and charge the Marines. Take it from a Frenchman: it's best to be in the mob that wins. And the mob that opposes Trump ain't gonna be the one that wins this time.

What happened yesterday is really a BFD, and a tragic one at that. There will be more and more violence, the left will see to that. It may be that the pissed off silent majority has finally had enough and will meet violence with violence this time around. IMO we are headed for a very hot summer. And make no mistake, it will be racial at the core, the Black Lives Matter tribe vs. the White Privilege tribe with a dash of La Raza tribalism thrown in. This is exactly what the DRats want. I don't know who wins in this scenario.

потому что Бог хочет это тот путь

Either you or he lie. I want to know the truth of the situation. Either Trump pulled a false flag con or some in the media with the help of the Chicago PD (and we all know who the mayor is) are pulling a major Nazi like move to influence the election.

Trump stands by claim Chicago police advised event cancellation

Trump stands by his written statement that he met with law enforcement.

Your source:

"We met with security and the law enforcement, who I think did a terrific job, and they told me it'd be best not to go in and do the speech," Trump reiterated in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity after the postponed event.

When asked again by Hannity on whether law enforcement motivated his decision, Trump again responded affirmatively.

Trump did not say he met with Chicago PD. He met with his personal security and law enforcement. The Secret Service travels with him and vets all venues in advance. He does not need to reach out to Rahm Emanuel or some Chicago spokeshole. Secret Service is with him and at the venue.

Only the wilfully blind would have assessed that it would have been safe to continue with the event. After the event, the CPD spokeshole could assess that the CPD had things under control.

The CPD has notoriously lost all control of the Chicago streets. There are over 100 homicides so far this year. Chicago had 51 murders and 251 shootings in January.

With over 500 shooting victims this year, about 10 weeks in, just those in the first twelve days of March are:

That is fair testament to how the Chicago PD is keeping the streets of Chicago safe. Only a fool would rely on the Chicago PD spokeshole to determine that the Chicago PD had the ability on hand to render safe, a venue which included a large mob of socialists, communists, and anarchists, to include, but not limited to, BLM, FTP, RevCom (responsible for much of the professionally made signage), Move On, Bernie supporters, flag stompers and burners, and various others intent on disturbing the peace.

Trump to hold West Chester event Sunday

Update: Donald Trump has now scheduled a campaign stop in West Chester at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Trump's campaign is calling it a town hall meeting at the Savannah Center, which holds up to 1,200 people, according to the venue's website.

Ticket information is on Trump's campaign website.

Previous report: Donald Trump is no longer planning a rally in Downtown on Sunday afternoon.

The Secret Service security supporting the GOP presidential front runner's campaign could not complete its preparation work in time to hold the event at the Duke Energy Convention Center, said Eric Deters, a local spokesman for Trump's campaign.

"Trump wants to come here, and the campaign is still looking to find a location for either Sunday or Monday," Deters said.

[...]

The campaign had reserved Duke Energy Convention Center to hold a rally from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. City officials also said the campaign had inquired about holding a rally at Lunken Airport, but the city does not have enough parking to accommodate thousands of people at the East End airfield.

The Secret Service does not depend on the local PD to say a venue is safe. They make their own determination.

Sumtymes, you split hairs that only a bullshitter like Trump can manifest.

Trump is not a liar for saying he consulted with law enforcement because your favorite liberal rag reports that the Chicago PD whined that they were not consulted. The Secret Service does not rely on the local police to make a decision.

The claim that Trump must have lied because he did not consult with CPD is unfounded. The notion that Trump or the Secret Service would have sought and been influenced by the opinion of a CPD spokeshole is laughable. The Secret Service would have their own on-site presence. They are the ones who volunteer to take a bullet.

No one calls the SS "law enforcement" other than currency counterfeiters.

At the Trump rally today. Every secret service agent, or at least the uniformed ones, had the words "POLICE" written on the back.

The only uniformed SS are the guards at the Capitol and around D.C.

There are no uniformed SS in Ohio.

You have no CLUE to what is happening.

Why would I have no clue? I'm 52 years old. Saw the Detroit riots first hand. Was in California during the LA riots. Seen a lot, heard a lot, know a lot.

What sort of special double-secret knowledge and insight do you think YOU have that the rest of us don't?

You don't have any.

I am not referring to a few riots or protests here or there. The entire world is upheaval and because of foreign intervention in other nation's affairs by the US government, the nation has been reduced to being tax slaves paying off otherwise unnecessary federal debt.

America will never eliminate these debts, either. And those same debts reduce federal domestic expenditures, no matter what a presidential candidate may talk about.

All of these post WW2 treaties can not be broken. So the debts shall rise for foreign intrigue and unnecessary meddling.
