Solid Concepts debuts a 3D-printed, fully metal version of the M1911 handgun. On Sunday, a West Virginia carpenter who goes by the name "Derwood" released a new video (above) of his "Shuty-MP1" firearm, a small semi-automatic 9mm weapon that is almost entirely 3D-printed with inexpensive PLA plastic. The only parts of the gun that are metal are the steel barrel and springs. Derwood's gun illustrates the evolution of 3D-printed firearms, which have rapidly evolved in nearly three years since the debut of the simple Liberator and the printed AR-15 lower receiver. "This gun has been a work in process for about a year now," Derwood told Ars. He posted a video of its assembly last week. "The first model required some welding and machining, and the goal was to keep it simple so that anyone could build it," he added. "It is now to that point." And the Department of Justice says there's nothing illegal about it, either. The Shuty-MP1 appears to be largely based on the AR-15 lower design but with a much smaller upper. Derwood is part of a group called FOSSCAD, which is "dedicated to the datalove of open source CAD, 3d-printing, awesomeness, and firearms." However he has not yet released the relevant CAD files that would allow anyone to duplicate his design. The United States Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 allows anyone to manufacture their own firearm without a license, but manufacturing such weaponry for sale or transfer does require a federal license. Derwood told Wired that the Shuty-MP1 isn't perfect; the plastic around the barrel apparently begins to melt after 18 shots if it's not allowed to cool.

The bolt assembly and the barrel would still have to be steel. Basically, he built the housing. That melts.

You bet! That doesn't melt until after 30 shots.
Some of you must shoot lots and lots of ammo on a regular basis. Not everyone needs to be a marksman. Brandishing the gun against a burglar or mugger and knowing how to squeeze a few shots off at the under-20' range is all 90% of the public needs. So, cheap gun. Lots more people can afford to keep one around. We're seeing better plastics and other materials becoming available for 3d printing. So durability will improve a lot in the next few years.
I don't want to wait for a few years. I already have mine. Besides, if I needed a cheap gun now, I would look around a buy a good used one, or by a High Point - ugh. If you can not afford what is available, sell some of your stuff, get an extra job, give up cable TV, etc, etc. Buy now, avoid the rush. If the gun is for personal defense, be sure to buy quality. If you were buying a parachute, would you want cheap, or the best? Here's someone else to tell us what we "need":
It surprises me how much people resent any kind of change. It isn't like anyone is trying to force you to buy a plastic gun. Really, you two geezers aren't worth the keystrokes. This is an important tech advance for producing unlicensed firearms but you two are apparently too stupid to recognize it. So roar on, assholes. People will downloadse the blueprints and print these guns for themselves and produce custom mods of every kind, whether it pleases you or not.
It's merely a different way to manufacture the housing. And, as it turns out, a worse way. My point was, you still have to purchase a steel barrel and a steel bolt assembly. Which is the heart of any gun. I guess I'm not as impressed as you.
