Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) says Donald Trump is a “fake conservative,” though he won’t say the same about Trump’s newest backer Sarah Palin.
In an interview Monday evening, the Kentucky senator and struggling presidential candidate said his party needs to take a far deeper look at Trump and whether he truly appeals to the GOP’s conservative values.
“The question for conservatives is whether Donald Trump is a real conservative or not. I think he’s a fake conservative,” Paul said, adding that he believes Trump was a supporter of President Obama in 2008. “Conservatives have to look closely at Trump’s record and decide whether he’s a conservative or not.”
Asked if Palin is conservative, Paul responded: “I’d rather reserve my comments for Trump.”
I notice Rand is closing ranks with Cruz in attacking Trump. The problem is he just isn't polling that well, making it harder to move the needle.
This doesn't help Rand but might help Cruz a little at the margins.
It somewhat deflects Palin's praise for Trump as a conservative by having a second opponent declaring flat out that Trump is simply not a conservative by any measure.
Interesting Rand is increasing his Trump attack right now, just after Palin said such kind things about him in her Trump endorsement.
"It somewhat deflects Palin's praise for Trump as a conservative by having a second opponent declaring flat out that Trump is simply not a conservative by any measure."
Well, Palin doesn't have a dog in this hunt so she's a bit more credible, eh?. Second, Ron Paul is not exactly someone's ideal of a conservative, either. And that's after he flip-flopped on his earlier positions.
