politics and politicians Title: Uh oh. Bernie Sanders thinks cops should handle campus rape claims Oh you got trouble. Just when Bernie Sanders was suddenly riding high in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire he had to go and stick his sensible shoe in his mouth. Sanders came out today and weighed in on the college campus “rape crisis” and dared to say that serious allegations of violent crimes should be handled… *gasp* .. by the police. (The Hill) Decrying rape and sexual assault on campuses as an “epidemic,” he said schools must not try to handle the issue internally. “Rape and assault is rape or assault whether it takes place on a campus or a dark street,” he said Monday at the Black and Brown Presidential Forum in Iowa. “If a student rapes another student it has got to be understood as a very serious crime, it has to get outside of the school and have a police investigation and that has to take place.” I don’t know how this guy expects to get elected as a Democrat now. That’s a statement which could have come straight off the pages of Hot Air and it probably would have been written by, well… me. Ben Kamisar is the author of the linked article and I simply love his explanation of why this is such a problem for Sanders. He talks about how such theories of law enforcement have long been met with skepticism by activists on campus. He cites surveys which indicate that overwhelming numbers of students want to have the choice left to them regarding whether to report or to whom. On the first count I have to reluctantly agree with the students. Whether you report or not is, I suppose, up to you, assuming you were really attacked. But by the same token, if you were, I reserve the right to blame you for the next person that your assailant attacks because you weren’t willing to help bring them to justice. When it comes to the question of who to report to, this is nothing more than one of many chapters in the book of politically correct insanity which makes me come close to suggesting that we should just shut all the colleges down. If there has been a violent crime you report it to the police. You don’t go tell your guidance councilor and ask them to convene a kangaroo court to determine innocence, guilt and punishment. Even if you managed to get the right guy in an actual case of rape or other assault, all the aforementioned kangaroo court can do is expel the attacker, freeing him to go down the road and attack somebody else. And you’ll frequently get the wrong person or simply accuse someone who hasn’t broken any actual laws and deprive them of their constitutional rights. Sanders is going to get into trouble with this one. All of those young, college age kids who flood his rallies are going to demand an explanation. Of course, given how fast Bernie turned tail and ran when challenged by the Black Lives Matter movement, he may be out apologizing for this one by tomorrow morning. Poster Comment: The Bern suffered a rare moment of lucidity. I'm counting the minutes until he issues a profuse apology. These are the same people who would demand that issues of Priest sexual crimes should be handled by the police instead of the diocese. If we agree that rape and sexual assault is a crime ,then this is a no brainer . Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? #2. To: tomder55 (#1) I have to question the mental competence of someone who would argue that rape and assault should be handled internally on the campus. An actual rapist should not get his wrist slapped and expelled. An accused person should have the right to face their accuser and have the case heard in a real court of law. Repercussions from such accusations can follow someone for a lifetime in the modern era, affecting job offers, marriage, etc. I see now the SJW "campus rape" activists want to impose a standard where all accused persons just get expelled. So if someone says that they were raped by one or more of a dozen "attackers", then all of them would get expelled automatically, even if the campus kangaroo court knew that only one of them actually had sex with the accuser. And of course, criminal matters should always be investigated by competent police and prosecuted in a court of law by a prosecutor with a judge presiding. This is our system of criminal justice and no one believes that rape is not criminal. There is no such thing as "a little rape" or "rapey sex". There is rape and not rape. And there are also false accusations and the need for a court of law to protect the innocent.

You are obviously forgetting about our latest and future Muslim refugees, who see rape of an infidel as not only their due,but their duty. Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) American Indians had open borders. Look at how well that worked out for them. #4. To: TooConservative (#0) A little background on Bernie.

#9. To: TooConservative (#8) " Nice reminder that Bernie has always looked like a total doofus. " I would say he looks like a douche bag. To: Stoner (#9) You're probably more accurate, technically speaking. : )
#11. To: All (#10) What a strange issue for him to pick up at this point but I'm glad he's on the right side of it, even if only as campaign-trail window dressing. Tch, what a cynic I am to even conjecture such a thing!
