The castle likely has running water and flush toilet facilities for tourist accommodations. It can protect against snipers and other activities and commands the countryside. My guess it is fear of "blue on blue" attacks like we seem to suffer in Afghanistan makes the Russians want to have a wall between them and the Syrians - even the loyal ones. Well if the attack happens from the same side it was called "blue on blue" usually in reference to accidental friendly fire incidents but in Afghanistan it is the local troops we have trained deliberately targeting their own side aka they are turn coats.
