Putin plans air strikes in Syria if no U.S. deal reached: Bloomberg

WASHINGTON

Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for unilateral air strikes against Islamic State in Syria if the United States rejects his proposal to join forces, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Russia has increased its military presence inside Syria and its arms supplies to the Syrian army as it steps up support of longtime ally President Bashar al-Assad, drawing warnings of further destabilization from Western countries that oppose Assad.

A Russian diplomatic source told Reuters on Wednesday that Moscow sees a growing chance to reach international agreement on fighting terrorism in Syria and end the crisis that has stretched into its fifth year.

Bloomberg reported that Putin's preferred course of action was for the U.S. government and its allies to agree to coordinate their campaign against Islamic State militants with Russia, Iran and the Syrian army. It cited a person close to the Kremlin and an adviser to the Defense Ministry in Moscow.

Bloomberg cited a third person as saying Putin's proposal called for a "parallel track" of joint military action accompanied by a political transition away from Assad, a key U.S. demand. Russia has communicated the proposal to the United States, according to the news service.

But one source told Bloomberg that Putin was frustrated with U.S. reticence to respond and was ready to act alone in Syria if necessary.

Good for him. He is going to save Greece, in particular, by doing this. The Greeks are being swamped.

I particularly noted that the Greeks refused to close their airspace to Russian overflight, in spite of a US request.

Putin is the adult in the room here.

In some respects, Tsipras has NATO and the EU by the balls.

It has surprised me just how bold he is. I guess he figures that Syriza (and Greece) have nothing to lose so he's going to try to change the entire power dynamic of the EU and NATO.

Smart moves. If nothing else, EU/NATO/US will have to buy him off and give Greece what it wants.

It will be interesting to see how he fares in the Sunday election. cranky thinks he's doomed, I think he is even money to win it outright. Recall the predictions of the doom of Bibi and of Cameron in Britain, both in the last year, both were slated to lose in a landslide - according to polls right up to election day - and they both won in a landslide.

I did read other reporting that Russia is expanding its presence in Syria with two more bases in addition to the new airbase they built up. Looks like these two bases are to support Assad's army operations, perhaps with "advisors" who will lead them in combat.

It would be the standard play. We can recall the Soviet programs to do the same with the incompetent and corrupt Arab militaries in their Cold War client states.

That's all fine, as long as we get out of there. We are not helping. It's expensive.

We can recall the US government playing the same proxie wars for decades under the banner of, "national security." It is otherwise known as, "foreign intrigue and meddling where none is required with US taxpayer money."

There is a lot of irony in a warmonger like Petraeus telling us, after he participated as a top general in invading two Mideast countries and destabilizing the entire region, that that nasty old Putin is rebuilding an empire.

It's a good thing we have such an impeccable moral authority to lecture others on such matters.

You almost think the general has to be joking. I suppose they think his standup act is a real hoot down at the War College. A real knee-slapper.

Seems like they could even allow Russian warplanes to use Greek bases. Cypress would be even better. Britain has an air base on Cypress, and they were utterly useless when Turkey invaded the Island in 1974.

Seems like another thing we should do is pull back on our NATO commitment so we are not obligated to defend Turkey. I'd love to see Putin take Constantinople and place the cross back on the Hagia Sophia. As it stands now we'd be obligated to go to war to stop that. He could use the stone from the minarets to build the war memorial in Moscow.
