Title: Tokyo Hopes to Make Hydrogen Power the Star of the 2020 Olympics

TOKYO—Like Olympic villages of past years, Tokyo’s version in 2020 will feature new buildings to house athletes and buses to ferry people to competition venues. But if Tokyo’s governor has his way, it will all be powered by a new energy source: hydrogen.

Tokyo Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe

“The first Tokyo Olympics, 50 years ago, left a bullet-train system as a legacy. I want to leave a hydrogen society as a legacy for the next Tokyo Olympics,” Gov. Yoichi Masuzoe said in an interview.

Tokyo has said it plans to spend 40 billion yen ($330 million) through 2020 to encourage the development of technologies based on hydrogen, a gas capable of producing energy without exhaust other than water when mixed with oxygen in a fuel cell.

By the time the Summer Games kick off, Japanese officials hope to have thousands of hydrogen-powered cars on the road, at least 100 fuel-cell buses in operation, mostly in and around the Olympic Village, and a network of fueling stations supplying the gas. They also are considering building a pipeline to transport hydrogen across the Olympic Village, where industrial-size fuel cells would power buildings like the media center and the athletes’ dormitories.

It is all part of a broader push by Japan to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels, as well as nuclear power, in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima disaster.

Gov. Masuzoe and officials in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration acknowledge the challenges but say they can be addressed. Shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and plant builder Chiyoda Corp. already are working with Electric Power Development Co. of Japan to produce hydrogen from low-grade coal in Australia. The first batch of Australian hydrogen is expected to arrive in Tokyo in time for the Olympics, the companies say. Japan also is approaching countries like Saudi Arabia and Malaysia for hydrogen produced from their refineries, consortium members say, and weighing the possibility of harnessing hydroelectric power in remote locations, perhaps in Canada or Russia, to produce hydrogen that could be shipped to Japan...snip

The Hype About Hydrogen {written decades ago}

A good read if one is not afraid to really see the nature of the Emperor's new clothes.

That's why it's worthless.

You are aware of the fact that 10 years is an eternity when it comes to tech, aren't you?

A better read: 20 Hydrogen myths (Published before Romm's book).

This peer-reviewed white paper offers both lay and technical readers a documented primer on basic hydrogen facts, weighs competing opinions, and corrects twenty widespread misconceptions. Some of these include the following: a hydrogen industry would need to be developed from scratch; hydrogen is too dangerous for common use; making hydrogen uses more energy than it yields; we lack a mechanism to store hydrogen in cars; and hydrogen is too expensive to compete with gasoline. This paper explains why the rapidly growing engagement of business, civil society, and government in devising and achieving a transition to a hydrogen economy is warranted and, if properly done, could yield important national and global benefits.

Romm is a well known Hydrogen hater and his time has passed.

DO NOT underestimate the Japanese or the Koreans. Or do. I don't care.

While a bunch of yesterday's nay sayers run around thinking they've kept themselves aware of H2 tech the Japanese are moving forward.

You are ignorant about technology my friend. The laws of thermodynamics do not change - not in 10 yeras, not in 100 years. But I understand why you refuse to learn anything about this. You obviously are comfortable about your ignorance.

No need to tell them, they have known that for decades now.

You are aware the the laws of Thermodynamics haven't change for hundreds, thousands of years, aren't you? Technology does not change the Laws of Nature. Get a clue, Pal. I was studying this technology in High School and in College in the late 50s and mid-60s. My High School organic chemistry final had questions such as "Starting with coal, air and water synthesize each of the following:(a) methane, (b) hydrogen, (c) ethanol.............."

Nothing has changed save for the relative cost of materials, modest improvements in efficiency of chemical (catalytic) and electrical conversions, and, more significantly, the introduction of a new flim flam Religion called Climate Change. The Laws of Thermodynamics today are exactly what they were then. The chemistry of today is exactly the same as it was then.

The only way that hydrogen technology, or almost all the renewable sources (save hydro and in some situtations wind) will ever be economically competitive is when the price of conventional fuels are artificially increased by regulation, taxation, propaganda and fraud (all of which is the domain of the Federal government, especially the so-called progressives).

Try selling your snake oil somewhere else. There are plenty of rubes out there that might bite.
