politics and politicians Title: Mitch McConnell, John Cornyn Push Through Voice Vote to Fund Planned Parenthood, Protect Obama’s Iran Deal
On the floor of the U.S. Senate on Sunday evening, something remarkable—a little bit insider-y in Washington, but remarkable nonetheless—happened: The Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), his entire leadership team, and most of the Republicans in the U.S. Senate voice voted through measures to fund Planned Parenthood in its entirety and to help protect President Barack Obama’s nuclear arms deal with Iran. The reason the voice vote is significant is because McConnell, especially, and his Whip Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), purposefully launched what appears to be an unprecedented effort to duck accountability for their votes—and the votes of every other GOP member who joined with them in supporting Obama’s Iran deal and funding for Planned Parenthood. The way it went down is a little bit confusing, and procedurally awkward, but it’s truly odd—and highly unusual—for members in the United States Senate to purposefully avoid roll call votes when they are asked for one by a member of the Senate. Here’s what happened: McConnell offered to the highway bill a non-germane amendment—which was deemed germane by his colleagues this weekend—that would reauthorize the highly controversial Export-Import Bank. In response, Sens. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) offered two amendments on Sunday evening to McConnell’s non-germane-to-the-highway-bill-amendment-that-was-later-inaccurately-deemed-germane. The reason why Cruz and Lee offered amendments to McConnell’s amendment—essentially second tier amendments, or amendments to an amendment—rather than to the highway bill itself is because McConnell engaged in a tactic made popular by his predecessor, former Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), called “filling the amendment tree.” Doing that ensures that there is no opportunity for senators to offer any extra amendments, and it is a tactic designed to stifle open and honest debate. Cruz’s amendment would have, when it comes to President Obama’s nuclear arms deal with Iran, kept sanctions on Iran until it recognized the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state and until Iran released the four Americans it is currently holding hostage in their country. Lee’s amendment would have defunded Planned Parenthood—which has gotten lots of extra attention as of late, as new covert videos have emerged showing executives from the taxpayer-funded abortion-providing institution seeking to sell aborted baby body parts. Cruz’s came up first, and when he offered it, it was shot down by the chair in the Senate—the presiding officer—as non-germane to McConnell’s Export Import Bank reauthorization amendment. Cruz appealed the ruling of the chair—a vote that requires just 51 Senators, or a simple majority in the Senate—and instead of actually having a recorded roll call vote, the yeas and nays, GOP leadership including McConnell and Cornyn ordered it voice voted down. Since the vote threshold to overturn the ruling of the chair is a simple majority, and there are only 46 Democrats in the Senate, it means that McConnell and Cornyn would have needed to deliver at least five Republicans to kill Cruz’s motion, assuming all the Democrats voted that way. Instead, by voice voting it down—in fact, only Sens. Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Lee seconded Cruz’s motion for a roll call vote, not a sufficient number to get a recorded vote—they kept themselves from having to make five Republicans walk the political plank to vote against something they say they support. Voice voting means a whole bunch of senators just yelled out that they didn’t support Cruz’s effort to restrain Iran from hurting Israel, because McConnell and Cornyn didn’t want evidence of which (at least) five Republican senators would join presumably all the Democrats to vote down the amendment’s chances. The same exact process played out a few minutes later when Lee moved to do the same. In response to this process happening on Sunday evening, in a public statement on his website, Cruz hammered McConnell. “We’ve just seen something extraordinary on the Senate floor,” Cruz said in the statement. “The American people elected a Republican majority believing that a Republican majority would be somehow different from a Democratic majority in the United States Senate. Unfortunately, the way the current Senate operates, there is one party, the Washington party.” Cruz hammered McConnell for working with Reid to achieve a non-Republican agenda. He said:
Specifically about the voice-vote tactic, Cruz called it “unprecedented” in U.S. Senate history. He went on:
McConnell’s office and Cornyn’s office did not respond to a request for comment from Breitbart News about the matter. But Reid’s spokesman, Adam Jentleson, said that even he has never seen actions like what McConnell engaged in against the Republican members of the Senate. Jentleson told Breitbart News in an email:
Jentleson added that McConnell’s fecklessness and inability to solve problems within his own party—and his efforts to shut down intra-Republican debate—prove he’s not an effective leader. “For whatever reason, Senator McConnell appears unable to resolve the concerns of his more conservative members and seems to think he has no recourse but to resort to procedural maneuvers to silence them,” Jentleson, who has worked for Reid for years, told Breitbart News. “Senator Reid filled the tree when he felt he’d reached an impasse with Republicans, but as far as I can recall he never filled the tree or denied a sufficient second to members of his own caucus.” This theme that McConnell is more interested in working with Democrats than he is in accomplishing GOP priorities is one that is not new. A few months ago, Breitbart News broke down empirical vote data showing that McConnell as Majority Leader this year has not accomplished any GOP priorities and has not succeeded in getting any legislation through the Senate and signed by the president without overwhelming support from the Democratic conference. Back then — something that clearly continues — Jentleson was gleeful that McConnell is acting more like a Democrat than a Republican. “While Republicans have done nothing to create jobs and help the middle class, on other topics like passing clean funding for Homeland Security and confirming Loretta Lynch, Senator McConnell has done the right thing by bringing bills and nominations to the floor that Democrats can support,” Jentleson said back then. “Democrats hope this trend will continue.” It clearly has. According to nationally syndicated radio host Mark Levin, it will continue even longer unless McConnell resigns as Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate. Levin said on his Facebook page:
Of course, just a day after this effort on the Senate floor on Sunday, McConnell forced the Export-Import Bank reauthorization amendment to the unrelated highway bill through the Senate late Monday evening. In response, Cruz issued a scathing statement:
Cruz added that McConnell is doing all this while ignoring issues that matter to Americans. “Instead of taking up issues that really matter to the American people, like defunding Planned Parenthood, standing up against Iran, passing ‘Kate’s Law’ and ending sanctuary cities, the Senate chose to satisfy the demands of big businesses with even bigger pocketbooks,” Cruz said. “Fortunately, leaders in the House have indicated this bill is dead on arrival. I hope that my colleagues in the House remain true to conservative principles and stand firm in refusing to surrender to the Washington Cartel.” (1 image) Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top • Page Up • Full Thread • Page Down • Bottom/Latest And there are still morons who will claim that the Republican Party is "pro- life". Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #3. To: Vicomte13, cranky, sneakypete (#1) (Edited) And there are still morons who will claim that the Republican Party is "pro- life". Ha! Pro Abortion is what 2nd amend gun rights are to many on the right and crosses party lines for both. Also, anti-abortion was always about being a wedge issue but never acting on it. It ensured a built in vote for the GOP from religious folks and a money maker. If it was actually banned back when more older Americans were against it that loss of that wedge issue would have made the GOP less attractive. Let's face it, the only reason many Catholic urban whites are Republicans (the party that called Irish and Italian immigrants names and was anti their immigration) is because of abortion. But that was then and the demographics of such Catholics is shrinking - the new generation Catholics are pro abortion and condom use. So the GOP knows if it does anything to actually ban abortion it will be butchered at the polls. I still wonder why conservative anti-abortionists are delusional enough to think their anti-abortion stance is still somewhat popular? It is a "has-been" or "zombie" issue (and I say this as a pro lifer who is being analytical and honest about the situation). PS: A Has-Been or Zombie issue is a political issue that is no longer relevant but for whatever reason will not die and the demographic that cared about this issue when it was relevant - while shrinking - is still important and vocal about it - while dragging down the party that is wedded to that zombie issue. A case in point is prohibition. Prohibition was a hot topic for like 50+ years or even more with the temperance movements - it was the abortion/anti-abortion or slavery/antislavery issue of its time. Then they finally passed prohibition and it proved very unpopular. Both parties approved of prohibition (Repubs more than Dems) but the Democrats ditched supporting prohibition but the prohibitionists in the GOP held on to power like zombies and forced the party to keep supporting it to the detriment of the GOP party. Regarding abortion - it is the same old Republican talking points going back to the 1980s - over and over - made by politicians who aged but did not grow - and just repeat the same opinions while the world around them has moved on.
#4. To: Vicomte13 (#1) And there are still morons who will claim that the Republican Party is "pro- life". Ha! Here's a fact, Vic. And it's been made repeatedly: Despite the Vichy GOPe leadership calling shots like this, ONLY Republicans can be counted on as "pro-life." Remind me -- from which Party is Ted Cruz? Mike Lee? Rand Paul? Now roll call the "pro-life" Dems. Thanks.
#5. To: sneakypete (#2) If they didn't have a D or an R behind their names,it would be impossible to tell them apart. A "DC Political Cartel" is how Ted Cruz has described McConnell, Hatch, Cornyn, McStain, Graham, etal. and confirmed what they are -- at least at the leadership level. The Bleaters(R) who join the herd would rather kneel at the altar of power and corruption rather than principle.
#6. To: Pericles (#3) PS: A Has-Been or Zombie issue is a political issue that is no longer relevant but for whatever reason will not die and the demographic that cared about this issue when it was relevant - while shrinking - is still important and vocal about it - while dragging down the party that is wedded to that zombie issue. Pericles, are you a man of God or not? Abortion is the intentional, pre-meditated murder of a human being, an unborn child, quite literally the only type of WHOLLY innocent human being that exists. So, it may very well be true that, as far as the decaying, collapsing American system goes - like the Roman system that murdered Christians until it was finally wiped from the earth forever - abortion is a "Has-Been", "zombie" issue. But that is simply the choice of the damned and the doomed to be damned and doomed, and shuffle through their lives of violence and idolatry until they awaken in the afterlife, rejected by God as murderers and idolators, and thrown into the flames to be utterly destroyed. In reality, the issue can never be irrelevant. Killing babies is like crucifying Christians. Once the state does that, it, and all of the people who cheer it on, no matter how powerful, not matter how numerous, are damned-men walking. It is true that people do not like to think about abortion, because it FORCES you to choose between God and man, between Heaven and Hell. But choose you must. It is no zombie issue for you or me or anybody else, only for our wicked and doomed state and the legions of the damned murderers of babies. Prohibition, by contrast, was a zombie issue. It was entirely unlike abortion. Why? Because abortion really is murder, but God not only never prohibited alcohol, he actually made salvation itself CONTINGENT UPON drinking alcohol. "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life in you." Drinking alcohol is not optional - it is mandatory for salvation: God made it that way. Moreover, God used alcohol to perform his very first ever public miracle. The notion that alcohol is itself evil and should be banned is idiocy and idolatry and a direct slap in the face of God. Excess consumption of alcohol, or bread, is bad. But the proper use of alcohol is not neutral, it is good. And whoever says otherwise has set his face against the decision of God, and should repent, back down and stop being a foolish idolator. Abortion is not a zombie issue for those who want to go to Heaven. Alcohol was an issue that MADE zombies out of the idolatrous fools who were permitted to ban it.
#7. To: Liberator (#4) ONLY Republicans can be counted on as "pro-life." I am not a Republican. I hate Republicans. I am more pro-life than that stinking party. You have trapped yourself in the logic that the Canaanites are awful, so therefore we must serve Pharaoh. No.
#8. To: Liberator (#5) The Bleaters(R) who join the herd would rather kneel at the altar of power and corruption rather than principle. That's where the money is,and it's all about the Benjamin's. Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #9. To: cranky (#0) If people stop voting then they get their way. If people vote R and D they get their way. If people vote third party they get their way. Seems to me the system is rigged.
#10. To: Vicomte13 (#7) (Edited) You have trapped yourself in the logic that the Canaanites are awful, so therefore we must serve Pharaoh. You've still evaded the point. Just the facts, sir. If you refuse to answer the question, just say so.
#11. To: sneakypete (#8) It's all about the Benjamin's. And power. Fortunately, there are a few principled Republicans who are not making McTurtle's-Reid's Uni-Party a fait accompli.
#12. To: Vicomte13 (#6) Pericles, are you a man of God or not? Of course I agree with you but the number of people that feel this way is shrinking - which is my point.
#13. To: Justified (#9) Seems to me the system is rigged. Not the system so much as the payers. After thirty or forty years in office and/or having a seat passed from a relative, gaming the system is second nature. And no one cares enough to enforce the rules. There are three kinds of people in the world: those that can add and those that can't #14. To: Vicomte13 (#6) " Abortion is the intentional, pre-meditated murder of a human being, an unborn child, quite literally the only type of WHOLLY innocent human being that exists. " Amen brother, Amen!!! Si vis pacem, para bellum #15. To: Liberator (#11) It's all about the Benjamin's. Always. The two are so interchangeable that it is impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins. Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012) #16. To: Liberator (#10) You've still evaded the point. The facts? The Supreme Court that decided Roe v. Wade 7:2 in 1973 was majority appointed by Republicans. The Supreme Court that upheld and extended Roe in 1986 had a large Republican majority, and two Reagan appointees voted to expand abortion rights. Reagan himself was pro-abortion in California. He made a calculated and insincere shift to "pro-life" to get the vote of the moral majority, but put more pro-aborts on the court than pro-lifers. His successor put another pro-abort on the court: Souter. The Republican Party GAVE us Roe, and more deeply entrenched Roe. The Republican Party had the power to overturn Roe every single day since 1973: they have never lost control of the Supreme Court, and they still have it right now. The Republican Party had the power to block Obamacare with its mandatory abortion funding rules. It has not. Indeed, the Republican Supreme Court has TWICE upheld it, ensuring it would be so. The Republican Party controls Congress, and just voted to fund Planned Parenthood. There is nowhere to hide. Who is WORSE on abortion? The Republicans are. Why? Because they are as pro-choice as the Democrats, but it is the Republicans who, through their Supreme Court, have hammered abortion law into the Constitution and kept it there. And Republicans are liars about being pro-life. Sure, there are politicians out there who are Republican and say they are pro-life. And some of them are. That's swell. But the power in the Republican Party does not repose in those fringes. It reposes where the decisions are made, and the decisions always protect abortion. To say that the Republican Party is pro-life, when they gave us Roe and Casey, and Obamacare, and the Planned Parenthood vote - and of course nominated Romney who was always pro-abortion, and who was the author of Obamacare with its pro-abortion clauses back when he was governor of Massachussetts = well. that's a lie. Republicans are demonstrably more pro-abortion than Democrats, judged by their DEEDS with power. They just say they are not. In other words, Democrats are honest babykillers who say they support it and do it. Republicans are babykillers who gave us the laws of babykilling, but then they pretend they are not. And people like you continue to be duped by them and continue to bleat that they are pro-life because some dingleberries from the sticks who are Republicans but who never have any power say they're pro- life. Those are the facts. They are miserable facts. Wake up, open your eyes, see the truth, and leave that party.
#17. To: Justified (#9) If people stop voting then they get their way. That pretty well sums things up.
