Title: Speaking of Environmental Impact:: Anyone monitor their source of water?

I just realized that many of the fine Americans that are viewing this website gladly accept the standards for drinking water in America based on some archaic government standard.

Are you aware that both government issued and commercial water are not in complaiance for maximazing health as a human being? We need pure water, not water filled with drugs, sewage and added algae killer stuff + stuff that supposedly strengthens your teeth against tooth decay. The government shall always give standards of acceptable water quality based on the worst standards in the world; but, the US government has proven itself to be an unreliable source of protecting our respective health; yet they publish the worst standards in the world for water quality.

Do you drink piss water? Of course you don't. Or do you manage your own water resources for health? You should do so.

Please give an opinion on this thread associated with the subject matter. Trolls need not apply.

As an example, I filter the water for my family use with sub-micron filter technology along with UV light. It is the purest water in the world. And it is certified by independent labs.

It tastes awesome, too.

I don't know what you're tasting, since an RO system removes everything -- including minerals. Because of that it tends to be acidic.

Ever wonder why your RO system is put together using polyethylene tubing? RO water is so pure it will dissolve copper. Imagine what it does to your body.

Also, it wastes water -- typically, you use 10 gallons of incoming water to make one gallon of RO water. 9 gallons go down the drain. More waste with a cheap system.

Go to the store and look at the label on bottled water. It will say "Made using an RO (or distillation) process. Minerals added for flavor."

The best? Bottled spring water -- pure water taken from a spring with all the natural minerals and no added chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. Buy it by the case or have them home deliver the large 5-gallon bottles.

I do not need to do any of that. My water comes out of a well on my property. I also get it tested periodically, always a clean report. Tastes fine to us.

Same here. I like it cold and fresh from the tap, but the missus doesn't like all the iron.

Given that we're surrounded by farms and that the water source can run for miles, periodic testing is almost mandatory.

It depends on the RO system, White. In my case I use a mineral water cartridge after the storage tanks are charged.

The real goal is to remove the nasty stuff from my water source to include viruses and bacteria; having two parallel 275 gallon storage tanks that are closely linked together, I mix the water on a continuous basis with simple prefilters that are submicron + UV. When I say, "sub-micron" I mean to say: .2 micron filters.

This water is delicious in its own right. Upon demand, the water is delivered to another filter system; this tyme an RO system that branches in two directions: 1) to an ice maker and a gravity fed filter. My water nevers measures below 8.5 pH. It is far from acidic.

The brine water is used for the plants outside. There is no waste at all.

I want to add one more point about the system I use that is important to understand. I do not only filter the water at sub-micron level + UV but I also filter the air that is required for the venting characteristics of the storage tanks. The air is also filtered @.2 microns (absolute). I use Moss Mott sinister filters; expensive, but the aire does not add impurities to the process.

If you have a decent water softner you shouldn't have any issues with iron, or at least not many. The only time I do is if the little filter inside of it gets dirty and it effects the regeneration cycle, takes about 10 minutes once a year to clean it.

"If you have a decent water softner you shouldn't have any issues with iron, or at least not many."

We really need a whole house iron filter, but I'm too cheap to buy one. We do have a good water softener, but it will become "iron-bound" and not work as well. (Adding Iron Out to the salt helps during re-gen.)

Bottom line, there's still iron in the water and it has a taste. She drinks (and cooks with) bottled water.

(By the way, a water softener will not remove herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers or other chemicals from the water.)

A calcite filter after the RO process will raise the pH and add back calcium and magnesium resulting in a better taste.
