Video and Audio Title: Sling TV www.sling.com Above is the link to the homepage of sling tv,and below is a review by CNET magazine. www.cnet.com/news/sling-t...rything-you-need-to-know/ Anybody else at LF trying this streaming tv service? 1st week is free,and after that it is 20 bucks a month and you get AMC and TNT,among other stations. HBO is another $15 per month. There are also free movies for your basic monthy subscription,as well as pay movies. My Direct TV account was 70 bucks per month,but is creeping back up to a little over 100 bucks a month again,so I am looking for options. I subscribed and hook up to it using my ROKU player,but you can also do both on your PC,or even on your smart phone.
Poster Comment: Just subscribed a couple hours ago,and have mixed feelings about it. A lot of the programs I would watch on it can also be watched on my Netflix and my Amazon Prime account for free,but not all. RIght now I have am/have been watching the History Channel on it,and the History Channel is also available on Netflix. Haven't checked to see if the programming is identical yet,though. Frankly,AMC and TNT are big draws for me and why I am looking into it. So far MY opinion is that it works as advertised,but there are a couple of negatives. The 2 big negatives is I don't see any way to record programs there yet,and the programming is hard to figure out. Frankly,I am spoiled by my Dish Network and Direct TV DVR's and their ability to check upcoming shows and record them instantly as well as VOD shows. Trying to find and view a program in episode order is at best "clunky" for me. I may just decide at the end of the 7 days that it's worth another 80 bucks a month to have the convenience of recording and an excellent search engine from Dish or Direct. My time may not be worth much dollar wise,but it is worth something to me and I would rather spend it watching shows than trying to find them and remember when they come on. What say yee? Frankly,AMC and TNT are big draws for me and why I am looking into it I was watching Popcorn flix last night. They had a commercial for an AMC show called Humans. Looked very interesting.

Of the models current today, that includes the Roku 2(2720R), Roku Streaming Stick (3500R/HDMI) and Roku 3(4200R) models." Of course, your main router would have to be dual-band too (i.e. have 5GHz radios as well as 2.4GHz) for this to work. To really use this WiFi extender fully, you would have to have a primary 802.11ac or a 802.11n router (not one of those older 802.11g routers like a Linksys WRT54G or any router with the letters 54G in its name).
#4. To: TooConservative (#1) Seems to me like you're wandering back into sat subscription. Not really. While it shows a lot of promise and may be the future,it ain't there yet. From what I have seen so far,it's not worth 2 dollars a month and I will cancel before my free 7 day trial is out. Primarily because I can get the same content from Netflix cheaper,and the service is MUCH better. No,I can't record the streaming video from Netflix either,but I don't have to because it is there for me to view anytime I want. On Sling I have to pick a viewing time and remember to go there while it's playing. Plus there is no memory. If I stop a play to answer the telephone,I have to go back to the start of the program again. Plus I have already had instances twice of the streaming video dying,and had to start viewing at the start of the show once I got it to start loading again. Maybe I am wrong on some of this and just don't understand the Sling format yet,but I have another 5 days to try. I definitely need to check out other avenues for betting AMC,TLC,Sundance,etc before I make the final decision,but it's not looking good for Sling so far. I am sure it will be a much better service a year from now than it is now because streaming video IS the future of tv and movie viewing,and the Big Sat company that owns Sling no doubt sees the end of their almost monopoly coming up soon. They have the bucks to invest to make it better,and and they have a reason to do just that. Big Sat is dead,and just waiting around to be buried. Thanks,but I already have 200 feet of ethernet cable,all the ends and crimper bought and paid for as well as the plastic tubing and connection boxes,and I can get the trench dug for less than 100 bucks to bury it and not have to worry about ever buying anything else. Plus,I like the idea of a dedicated connection that I KNOW will work and can bury and forget that can't be pulled off the air by anyone passing by. My thinking is you could try one of these Netgear range extenders. Put in in front of a window that faces your outlying metal shed. I have no windows facing my "metal shed",which is actually a 35x50 metal building with a 18 foot ceiling and 14x14 insulated commercial garage doors at each end. To: sneakypete (#5) Is that a streaming video service? Yes and free on your roku or chromecast. There are a lot of free streaming sites on roku. What I really like though is an app for chromecast. It is called video stream. Whatever video you have on your computer from say the pirate bay. You can stream to your TV. They have a similar thing for the roku I think it is called media player or something like that. Actually they have a few. Also Plex is good to have as it translates pretty much everything on the fly.

I was only certain that I didn't know how to do it. IMHO,for a commercial service to be successful,stuff like being able to record their shows should be so simple to do that anyone who casually streams video should just be able to click on a button and do it. The biggest problem I have with my ROKU is it offers so much it's hard to keep track of what they do offer. We literally went from "there is nothing interesting on tv tonight to watch" to "there is too damn much to watch every night even if you watch it 24/7" in just one generation. Also,I am very happy to say that some of the dramas and historical shows offered by American companies now matches the quality of the best BBC stuff. Video and audio streams don't lend themselves to malware and viruses. The one main exception would be those special Sony CDs that caused such a public outcry. They would download an extra codec from Sony for Windows Media Player and it would take a lot of bandwidth and CPU power to monitor whether you were playing a genuine Sony CD or a pirated version. It also spied on what you were listening to, sending the results constantly to Sony. Sony pulled it from the market quickly and now pretends it never happened. By their nature, video/audio streams are just data. They aren't loaded into memory in buffers you can easily overrun to activate a malware payload. To infect a machine via streams, you'd need instead to attack the video player software. For an outfit like NSA, they could identify and intercept traffic to/from the video player and attack it, most likely as part of a player software update. There's very little upside to trying to infect machines via streaming. If they're already inside your network, they can attack software on the major OSes much better than to try to attack via streaming.

To: sneakypete (#11) I have Netflix also. I used to go through the list and I added more then a hundred movies that looked interesting to my play list. I haven't watched 99 percent of them. In fact I hardly ever watch netflix. The wife does though.

#20. To: sneakypete (#15) What's a yiffy? Yiffy is an uploader. Whoever it is they/he/she uploads HD movies that are very small and download in about 10 min or so. "Yiffy files" can be seen dominating the Pirate bay top 100 HD movies. They can also be found at lime torrents or pretty much any site that has those types of files. Yiffy also hast their own site. But its name changes periodically. Let me see if I can find it.

Because some of the older movies I like probably would download slow as not many people are sharing them. You can get an external HD for a hundred bucks that is 2TB. That would hold a ton of stuff.

To: sneakypete, A K A Stone (#15) You should look at PirateBay and KickassTorrents as primary torrent sites. Outfits like Limewire are kinda dicey, just like Kazaa and Shareaza used to be. And like Kazaa/Shareaza, lots of bogus malware-filled downloads in their software offerings. While I don't recommend Vuze/Azureus because it is written in Java (a security threat), I do like uTorrent. For $5 a year, it lets you stream torrents as you download them. The free version forces you to wait for the download to complete before you play it. A client that takes a miniscule 1MB of RAM and is mostly written in assembler, it will run on even very old and outdated computers easily. With the streaming option, uTorrent makes every torrent site into a big Netflix for you. It supports RSS feeds so it will automatically download lists of new torrents for you, very handy for big sites like the ones I mentioned. KickassTorrents does offer easy-to-use RSS feeds for its major torrent categories like movies and TV shows and you can choose specialized RSS feeds, like for HD-movies-only. Outfits like Kazaa/Shareaza/Limewire have a lot of security holes and problems over the years, lots of downsides. Much of the time, their video feeds are second-rate quality. You're much better off to stay with the best-known torrent clients like uTorrent (or even Vuze) and the main torrent sites like PirateBay and KickAssTorrents.

They are the rare exceptions to my rule to not buy movies or series. I own both and sometimes watch them again. I never get tired of viewing perfection. BTW,The Shield was pretty damn good,too.
