A police officer following up on a hit-and-run case in Columbus, Ohio, heard screams coming from a neighbor panicked by a medical emergency. On responding, he was accosted by the family dog and in the struggle accidentally shot a young girl in the leg.

The mishap occurred on Friday when a Columbus police officer missed the dog and hit the girl in the right leg.

They were carrying her, she had a blanket around her, there was some blood, she obviously was conscious, she wasn’t even crying,” Gary Parsley, who lives a few doors down, told WTTE Fox 28.

The police officer responsible, who remains unnamed, is receiving psychological counseling.

Parsley was the man the police had wanted to interview. He had just been discharged from the hospital after recuperating for two weeks following a hit-and-run accident and the police officer had come to get a statement. As the officer went to check something on the computer in his car, a neighbor started screaming because of a medical emergency. The police officer was responding to these screams when the unfortunate incident took place.

When he goes to help out, a dog charges him, he fires one shot misses the dog, hits the four-year-old in the leg,” Denise Alex-Bouzounis of the Columbus Police told WTTE.

A heavy police presence was called in as Columbus police began their investigation into the shooting.

I was upset when I thought they shot the dog,” Parsley said, describing how he felt when he arrived on the scene. He became even more alarmed, however, when he heard the girl’s mother yell at the cop “You shot my kid!

The little Ohio girl is in stable condition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. She is expected to fully recover from the bullet meant for her furry guard. The dog wasn’t hurt.

Police say the officer will receive mandated psychological support counseling and can take leave time to recover from the traumatic experience.

For once, Fido survives.

I will say that if you have called police, you should lock up your dog securely, like in a pet transport crate. Too often dogs get shot running in their yard or in the house. I've never heard of cops shooting a dog in a cage.

If that had been done in this case, maybe the girl wouldn't be shot.

Chandler Police officers shoot dog; family says it wasn't necessary

A Chandler family is demanding answers from Chandler Police after officers opened fired on their dog killing it, even though it was in their own yard.

Caution: the video attached to this story is graphic and may not be suitable for all audiences.

That family is very emotional, and an internal investigation is launched after the officer killed the dog when it was fighting with another dog inside its fenced enclosure.

"I don't see again, his need to walk 12 feet from the sidewalk to an enclosure and shoot my dog," said Javier Robles.

To stop the dog from killing the other dog inside the enclosure.

"I don't see again, his need to walk 12 feet from the sidewalk to an enclosure and shoot my dog," said Javier Robles.

Robles is 3-year-old Simone's owner, Simone is one of the familys pit bulls. She was inside the enclosure when the officer shot him. He said his 3-year-old daughter saw the shooting from inside the home, and now she is traumatized.

"She says that her doggie blew up, that she hates cop; she woke up having a nightmare last night saying that her doggie blew up, she's been crying all day," he said.

Chandler Police said they got two 911 calls about two dogs fighting. When they arrived they found one dog had the other dogs face in his mouth. The dogs were separated by the fence and when one officer could not separate the dogs using a baton the other officer shot Simone.

But Robles doubts the officers account of what happened. "It's physically impossible for a pit bull to fit its mouth threw that small opening, the blood, you see there and on the floor, is from the officer, you can even see brain fragments because the officer blew my dogs brains out. Right here, point blank," said Robles.

Owner is to blame for not ensuring the two dogs could not fight.

Also, any chance cops get to shoot pitbulls seems to end up with dead pitbulls. You see this constantly. The cops and the public just hate pitbulls and Rottweilers. And Dobermans and shepherds aren't too popular either.

Did you run across the security cam video Robles said he had that would show the officer did wrong?

Also, did you notice if he has filed a lawsuit against the city?

Probably too soon for those to surface.

If he has video that there was no fight and he just shot the dog for nothing, he'll get a settlement from the city. Otherwise, this will be a big nothing.

Initial news reporting is big on these stories, sometimes going national for puny local incidents, but we rarely get detailed followups on so many of these outrage-theater news stories.
